Ensuring Dignity...

Recruitment of workers in Bangladesh RMG industry has been formalized; now the workers have due recognition with appointment letter and ID cards. They also enjoy job facilities, including earned leave, maternity leave, festival bonuses etc.

Nurturing Workers’ TalentBGMEA arranged two editions of musical talent hunt program for garment workers where the Champion was awarded with Tk one million, while the first and second runner-ups with Tk half a million each. Many individual garment factories of Bangladesh also arrange annual cultural and sports competitions like musical show, fashion show, football match, cricket tournaments etc for their workers. The pictures accommodated in these pages are the telltale evidence of the fact.

Health Hygiene&

RMG factories in Bangladesh are taking new initiatives every day to introduce good health and hygiene practices. The factories commonly provides with safe drinking water and spacious dining room. Some factories offer free lunch, plus food allowance to their workers. Some factories even introduced innovative practice like giving sanitary napkin to female garment workers for menstruation.

Ensuring Well-being...

A good number of garment factories in Bangladesh offer treatment and medical facilities such as medical center, pathology tests, medicines to their workers and employees at free of cost. BGMEA also runs 12 health centers and a full-fledged hospital in Chittagong that provides healthcare facilities and medicines to more than 60,000 garment workers per year at free of cost.

KHEA, the education assistance program of Epyllion Group, offers a beacon of hope to the children of its workers. Launched in 2012, a total of about five hundred meritorious children of the workers have so far been provided with scholarships under the KHEA Program.

Some apparel factories in Bangladesh have set up schools for the children of their workers which offer quality education and study materials at free of cost. BGMEA also runs five such schools for garment workers’ children and provides books and stipends to meritorious students. A good number of individual garment factories also provide scholarships to the meritorious children of their workers.

The readymade garment (RMG) industry which created employment for millions of people in Bangladesh has also become a blessing for many disabled. Several garment factories has offered jobs to disabled people ensuring work environment conducive to their style. A single garment unit in the country namely Keya Composite has employed at least one thousand hearing impaired workers. BGMEA has also promised to create job opportunities for autistic people in the RMG sector.

A number of garment factories in Bangladesh has set up dormitories to provide accommodation facilities to their workers. BGMEA and Chittagong Development Authority are setting up a six-storey dormitory for the female garment workers at the port city of the country, which at its final stage of construction. A few factories run unique ‘Fair-price Shops’ on their factory compound from where their workers can buy all essential commodities at nominal cost.

In a bid to help marginal communities to go forward, some

apparel units of Bangladesh offered jobs to tribal people.

Green Revolution...

Garment factories in Bangladesh are going green. The country has already at least 18 garment factories certified LEED by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Moreover, 67 more garment factories have enlisted their names in the USGBC, all of which are expected to secure LEED certifications by the end of 2016.
