Everyone in your club can benefit from this experience, young, older or in between – see the Toolbox for more information. In addition, remember, we are going to UN DAY (7 Nov 2015) again. So many people wanted to go last year and couldn’t, so now there is an opportunity to do it this year. From The Governors Chai

From the Governor’s Desk Unfortunately summer is coming to a close and

we are finishing up school and family vacations. It seems as though summer just got here and now it is going so quickly. Fall is just around the corner.

Perhaps it’s time to look over some of those things we put on hold during our summer activities. Now is the time to start implementing, if you haven’t already, more of the Rotary projects that your club so diligently planned last year. And since September is Basic Education and Literacy Month we are offering a very new and different learning experience from the Rotary Learning Institute (RLI) - (17 Oct 2015 – Siena College). The curriculum is entirely new and it should provide us with an opportunity to discover new ways to implement our projects more effectively, economically and perhaps even complete them sooner. Everyone in your club can benefit from this experience, young, older or in between – see the Toolbox for more information.

In addition, remember, we are going to UN DAY (7 Nov 2015) again. So many people wanted to go last year and couldn’t, so now there is an opportunity to do it this year. It is a great day and really valuable for you and our younger folks (Interactors, Exchange students, Rotoractors and our RYLA students, family members) to learn more about the UN and its Rotary connection. See you on the bus.

In addition, the District Foundation Event is also coming on 19 November 2015 at Stratton Air National Guard Base. It should be a great time and we are going to have an opportunity to take a tour through one of the C-130’s that operate in the frozen area of Antarctica and have music provided by a military band. Again, see the Tool Box for more information.

There are so many events coming up this fall. You must check the District Calendar and District Tool Box to see what’s going on. Also, remember to enter your

club projects and fund raisers, this way more of us Rotarians will know what’s happening and can attend, contribute and bring our friends and neighbors to show case our activities.

And as our RI President “Ravi” says, “Our time is now. It will never come again.” Let’s take advantage of it.

My club visits are going very well and it is a pleasure to meet so many different Rotarians and hear about all the events and projects that are going on. We meet is some very different locations and that gives me, my wife and aide PDG Blair Hartman the opportunity to sample many and varied cuisines. United Nations Day – November 7 Based on the overwhelming reaction from last

years UN Day event, DG Milan is having the District host bus transportation to the event!!! UN Day is a once a year opportunity to travel to UN Headquarters in Manhattan! There is an adult program with many members of Rotary leadership – focused on UN initiatives around peace and disease prevention. There is a separate youth (high school) program that runs at the same time. Very strong attendance at both events – it will sell out very quickly.

We have reserved two buses for the trip to/from NYC. Buses will depart (early) from Crossgates Mall parking lot in Albany to arrive in time for event registration. After the event, you will have time in NYC to explore the city and have dinner before boarding the bus near Bryant Park and returning to the Albany area.

To attend you need to do the following: 1) Register for the UN Day event at their

website http://www.riunday.org You need to save the ‘confirmation number’ you receive when registering.

2) District 7190 has reserved 2 buses to transport our members, friends, and youth to the event. Youth (Youth Exchange, RYLA, Interact) are FREE (paid by District), but must still register for bus to save a seat. Register for UN Day bus transportation by clicking here or go to the http://www.rotary7190.org website

Bus cost is only $40 per person if you register by September 30th. After 9/30 the bus cost increases to $50. Please register early to allow for us to ensure we have the right number of buses reserved. ~PDG David Hennel

Day at the Races

The Racing City Rotary Club recently hosted the third annual “Day at the Races” at the Saratoga Springs Race Track. Racing City President Tom Curley said everyone had a great time, enjoying the great weather, conversation and good old fashion ROTARY CAMARADERIE. The day was made even more special with a visit by none other than our District Governor Milan Jackson. There were rumors that some winning tickets may have been cashed President Curley said that didn’t matter because everyone who attended that day had a fun filled winning “Day at the Races”. ~Tom Curley

Training Corner

DGE John Mucha hosted a get-together on August 20 for Presidents-Elect. The meeting was held at the Malta Community Center, the expected location of the January and February PETS sessions.

A fun icebreaker preceded pizza, and a discussion of the calendar and content for the training that will be offered for Presidents-Elect. PEs in attendance were asked to weigh in on the content they would like to have included in their training sessions, and those not in attendance will be surveyed as well.

PETS training begins with Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) on Saturday, October 17, 2015 and concludes with the District Training Assembly (DTA) on April 9, 2016. The complete schedule is:

- October 17, 2015 RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) 8am-3pm Siena College, Loudonville

- January 26, 2016 President-Elect Training Session 1, Malta Community Center, Malta

- February 24, 2016 President-Elect Training-Session 2, Malta Community Center, Malta

- Friday March 18 and Saturday March 19, Multi-District PETS, Sheraton Syracuse University

- April 9, 2016 District Training Assembly/Grants Management Seminar, Skidmore College, 8am-3pm

If you are considering picking up the challenge of becoming your club's President-Elect, talk to DG Milan, DGE John, DGN Fred, your Area Governor, or District Trainer Larry Jones at 518-369-2163 about what the job entails!

RYLA – the Old and the New

In March of this year we celebrated the graduation of 34 students who successfully participated in the 2014-15 RYLA program.

We had a very successful 2014-15 program. It will be very fun watching these students as they enter their senior year of high school. And now is the time to start looking for a new set of students for our 2015-16 RYLA program. Have you talked to your local high school yet? How about a youth group in your area? Is there a YMCA that might have some ideas? We need your help in finding more candidates for leadership.

Who can benefit most from attending our RYLA program? Our program is designed specifically for high school juniors with untapped leadership potential. Our RYLA is not for the student who is already utilizing strong leadership skills. If you know a student and you think, “that person would be a really great leader if only…” then they are good candidate for RYLA.

This program can only be successful with your help. Please talk to all the youth you know and help us find students for this year’s program. If you have questions, would like an application package emailed to you, or would like to help with the program give a call or email Nick George, at 518-926-8688 or [email protected] ~ Nick George

Albany Medical Center’s (AMC’s) Cleft Craniofacial Center (CCC) Recognizes

Burnt Hills Ballston Lake (BHBL) Rotary Club and It’s Partners’ Grant Support

On August 20th, BHBL Rotary President Bill Wehrle presented Dr. Oluswaseun Adetayo, the creator of the CCC, a representational check of $42,200 which culminated more than a year’s effort by the BHBL Rotary Club and numerous partners to raise funds to help start a much needed regional service.

Dr. Adetayo and Dr. Brian Sheridan, of School House Road Pediatrics and CDCHP, addressed a group made up of District 7190’s DG Jackson and several PDGs, members of various clubs and organizations and numerous BHBL Rotarians.

Dr. Adetayo spoke about the founding values of Rotary and how this grant will provide a legacy of life changing, comprehensive services for thousands of children and families in the years to come. Dr. Brian Sheridan, accompanied by his family, spoke about his daughter Ciana’s positive outcome from Craniosynostosis, as a patient of the center.

Rotary’s overall contribution of $42,000 will help provide patients in a currently underserved area, the latest state of the art analytical and remedial services to children with cleft, craniofacial and congenital anomalies, to include reconstructive surgery, and the many multidisciplinary support functions available today for a child and family. The center will serve a 25 county region of 15.5 million people which overlays and extends beyond District 7190 boundaries.

Before the creation of the center, children and families would need to go to Boston or New York City to obtain similar services. Dr. Sheridan estimates that there are approximately one million children in AMC’s catchment area that could be helped by the center. Dr. Adetayo noted that she has seen about 1,200

patients to date and about half of them needed the multi-disciplinary services of the CCC. This initiative clearly shows the collective power of Rotary for good. Rotary’s values and networking capabilities were exemplified in “spades” by the depth and breath of the initiative’s donors.

Local clubs contributing along with BHBL included clubs from Shenendehowa, Amsterdam, Glenville, Albany, Hudson Shores, Ballston Spa, Mechanicville, Schenectady East and Northville. Individual donations came from Mary Anderson (BHBL), Bill and Shirley McClary (BHBL), The Falconers (Scotia), Steven and Catherine Caine (BHBL), Rey and Gini Whetten (BHBL), William Wehrle (BHBL), Mike and Doreen Brewster (BHBL), Dr. Sheridan (School House Road Pediatrics) and Dick and Phyllis Sleeper (Galway Lions Club). Non-Rotarian organizations donating included: School House Pediatrics, Gils Garage, C.T. Male Associates, Galway Lions Club, and the Burnt Hills Women’s Club.

Our Global Grant portion of the $42,000 would not have been possible without international partners, which included District 2820, Yuki Japan (PDG Isao Ohki), the Dhaka West Rotary Club (Captain Muhammad Shafi) and our primary international contact District 9210, and the Zambia Club (PDG Patrick Coleman), which also donated District Designated Funds (DDFs) of $5,000. Our own District 7190 also donated $4,300 of DDFs. Obtaining international partners would not have been possible without the significant help of PDGs David Hennel, Anne Cargile, Bill Nathan and Dan Stec. Lastly, Rotary’s World Fund contributed $15,050 in matched cash and DDF contributions.

This could just be the beginning in that Dr. Adetayo has already spoken about trying to help our international partners. ~ Steve Caine (Contributor’s note: The amount on the presentational check in the photos above should read $42,000.) Related photo on page 26…

Connect with Korea: Touch the World

Attend the

Rotary International Convention

in Seoul, Korea May 28-June 1, 2016

After a very successful Rotary Convention in Sao

Paulo, Brazil, Rotary turns its attention to the next Convention in Seoul, Korea, May 28-June 1, 2016. District Governor Elect John Mucha, from the Glens Falls

Rotary Club, is organizing our District trip to Seoul. Now is the time to plan for the Seoul Convention. If you have never been to a Rotary International Convention, you owe it to yourself to make the trip. It’s a great way to experience what it truly means to be part of Rotary. You will be inspired by world class speakers and enjoy fellowship with Rotarians from around the world. For more information, please check out www.riconvention.org. Seoul is a fascinating city with great food, shopping, and museums. And no VISA is required for US citizens to travel to Korea!

We will be planning District activities in Seoul and hopefully staying in the same hotel, so please let us know if you are interested in hearing more about our plans. Please email DGE John at [email protected] to be put on the email list.

One Year Without Polio in Nigeria July 24th marked one year since Nigeria last

reported a polio case caused by the wild poliovirus. This is the longest the country has ever gone

without a case of polio, and it’s a critical step on the path toward a polio-free Africa. It was only a decade ago that polio struck 12,631 people in Africa in one year —three-quarters of all cases in the world.

August 11th marked an even greater milestone: one year since the last case of polio in Africa. For Africa to be certified polio-free by the World Health Organization, it must go two more years without a case of polio. To do this, all children in Nigeria must continue to receive the polio vaccine, including those in hard-to-reach and underserved areas.

We are immensely thankful for our supporters, who have donated $688.5 million to fight polio throughout Africa. We also thank the volunteers and health workers from Africa and around the world who have devoted countless hours to immunizing the children there, who now have the opportunity to lead healthier, happier lives.

You’re our greatest advocates, and we need your help spreading the news about this significant milestone. Visit endpolio.org to download a tool kit of materials that will help you raise awareness of this progress. The tool kit includes sample social media posts, info and share graphics, a new video, and several customizable advocacy and media tools.

Thirty years ago, we told the world that we could achieve the eradication of polio. For every child, let’s make sure that reality is a bright one.

Thank you, The End Polio Now Team

The mission of the Gift of Life program is to make these dreams a reality by promoting a cure for life threatening conditions. Keep in mind that with your financial support we have saved the lives of 193 children. The Gift of Life Golf and Bocce Tournament is a major fundraiser where you support the children’s life line. Please become a partner by either recruiting participants for bocce or golf and by garnering golf (hole/tee) sponsors. Come and enjoy a great day for a great cause. Thank you! ~ Tom Burdick

Club Recognition Has your club been trying to get a little more recognition? Hopefully the 2015-15 District PR grant can help. Last year

almost 20 clubs took advantage of our mini "matching grant". Here's how it works. You get a quote for a project (a new sign, a new banner, other materials) and send us a picture of what the proposed item will look like when finished. The only caveat is that the funds can not be used for a particular project or event.

Upon approval, you go out and buy it! The district will reimburse HALF of your cost up to $200 dollars. There are a few requirements to qualify for the grant, Your club must have: 1) Paid 2015-16 RI dues 2) Paid 2015-16 District Dues 3) Set all 2015-16 Goals in My Rotary 4)Created a club logo w/new RI logo

Applications and samples of your project are due to DG Milan and I by 10/1/2015. You will be notified if it has been approved within 7 days. Clubs will be reimbursed after 3/1/2016. Thank you for helping to increase local awareness of Rotary! I look forward to seeing the magic you create! Melissa Ward www.NewWard.com, www.Melissa-Ward.com, 518-899-5855

• All RSVP's must be received by November 2 so that the base command can assemble and screen the list of guests. 10% of guests will be randomly selected for detailed security screening.

• All guests must provide photo identification at the gate and be on the list to gain admittance. For obvious reasons there cannot be any exceptions to these procedures.

• No alcohol is allowed on the base per base policy.

Rotarian Magazine Annual Photo Contest - Local Winner Delmar Rotarian Jim Ebersold’s daughter, Elissa, was the first participant in the district in the New

Generations Exchange Program last fall when she did an internship in Denmark. (Delmar also had two young women come from Denmark to our area.) When Elissa was in Denmark she took the photo below and submitted to the Rotarian Magazine annual photo contest which was judged this year by the New York Times Magazine photo editor. She took the third place and is in the current issue. Jim Ebersold Editor’s Note: On the next page you will find Elissa’s reflections of her experiences as a member

of the New Generations Exchange program. While reading her reflections you will realize that her photo perfectly captures her emotions.

THIRD PLACE Photographer: Elissa Ebersold, New Generations Service Exchange participant through the Rotary Club of Delmar, N.Y. Location: Vejle, Denmark Ryan: This picture is all about quiet and stillness. By composing the image with the red boat just below the horizon line, Ebersold reinforces the way the silvery lake and sky blend into each other, creating a harmonious and meditative image.

Sommerfugl by Elissa Ebersold

“At first I was afraid; I was petrified.” Now starting off my essay with a lyrical quote by Gloria Gaynor may seem trite and corny, but it accurately expresses my thoughts and feelings in those moments before my plane touched down in Billund, Denmark to start my New Generations Exchange experience through Rotary International. The sheets of rain were pelting the small oval windows, and the gray gloom outside didn’t aid in what should have been excitement. The knots in my stomach churned as I watched the luggage carousel chug along its track. However, as I walked out into arrivals with my baggage in tow, the nerves began to dissipate. There they were, my host family; they were standing in wait, waving Danish and American flags, holding signs, and smiling -- probably equally as nervous and excited as I was. Anyone who knows me knew my nerves started long before I set foot on a plane. The mere idea of branching out of my comfort zone was enough to make me shake in my boots (as for whether or not that’s figurative or literal, well, I can’t recall). And with some persuasion, I decided that it would be beneficial for me go abroad on my own. So when August 6th finally came, and I was sitting in the JFK terminal waiting for my Reykjavik-bound flight, I was fighting back the fear and tears that welled in my eyes. For the first time in my life, I was going to be somewhere without someone I knew to help me along the way, and I had to think for myself. I was tested the moment I was back on land in Iceland. I had to find the shuttle to my hostel. With no previous indication of where I would be met, or by whom, I waited by the chauffeurs holding signs for nearly a half hour before making my way to the information booth. It was the ladies in the booth who pointed me in the right direction. Once that first stressor was out of the way, I took a deep breath and relaxed. I could do this. And I did. I spent the next two days enjoying the picturesque vistas that Iceland had to offer, both above and below water. I saw the mountains around its capital enveloped in an ominous rolling cloud, the dusk at 3am, and the equally terrifying and beautiful crystal-clear watery abyss I witnessed as I snorkeled between continents. Iceland was easy compared to Denmark. Iceland was all tourism and sightseeing and vacation. Denmark was, well, tourism and sightseeing, but I worked during it all. I worked at the Danish food company Uhrenholt A/S, where everyday I would take their plain-text employee manual and make it beautiful and colorful. This undertaking was one of the largest, most in-depth designs I have ever done. It taught me so much about corporate design: color palette usage, redesign of infographics and graphs, and patience. I also designed internal communication campaigns, edited sales packets, took photos of artfully arranged plates of food for social media, attended professional photos shoots, and at lunchtime munched on a wide variety of Danish food and cheeses prepared for the office by the Canteen. I would laugh, walk, chat about music, and even flirt with my coworker Lars, all while avoiding giant spiders and inhaling the savory, salty scent of the marina that wafted through the window by my desk. I experienced more than work life. I got to travel the country and learn bits of its history. From the beaches in Skagen, the old city streets of Vejle, the college towns of Aarhus and Odense, my quaint little town of Middelfart, the busy Copenhagen, even to the drastically different city of Flensburg, Germany. I Iearned and saw so much, some of which were the wonderful paintings by PS Krøyer and Laurits Tuxen at the Skagen Art Museum, about the royal family in Copenhagen, HC Andersen in Odense, the Vikings and King Bluetooth in Jelling, the backstory of LEGO at the IdeaHus in Billund, and the history of the Uhrenholt headquarters (an old, eerily beautiful 19th century mental hospital) in Middelfart. My host family was wonderful and understanding of my struggles of adjusting to the world around me. They thoughtfully explained answers to my ignorant questions, were patient with my introversion, helped me learn bits and pieces of Danish through word games, and provided me so many opportunities for further immersion. I could never thank them enough for their kindness and hospitality. And at the end, they informed me my mistakes and how I could improve them the next time I went abroad. Denmark was a full cultural integration, where I lived, breathed, biked, ate, assimilated...I did everything except pay taxes and actually turn into a Viking. I did transform though. No, my hair is still brown (although sometimes it’s pleated), and I’m still the same height and have the same face (everyone in Denmark is quite tall, quite blond, and quite gorgeous), and English is still my native tongue. My changes are subsurface. Being a professional in another country allowed me to analyze the differences in my

career, in both my working and home life. I noticed the differences in government, people, and so much more between my home country and Denmark. I became more open, unabashedly saying what came to mind, but also more likely to initiate conversation with a stranger. While the latter behavior is actually the opposite of what Danes might actually do, I have noticed this change in myself. My defining moment was when I learned to pause and not panic in stressful situations, as I had to do when I was in Copenhagen trying to meet a friend my first week and neither of us knew the city, nor had cell phones. The friends I made in Denmark I am sure I will keep for life, and that’s what the Danes assure me. Despite my friends, most notably the two Danish women who came to the US in their own NGE experience, I did find my experience a bit isolating, and that is the one thing I would change about my time abroad. I was located in Middelfart, a picturesque tourist town lacking in college-age individuals. I was told many Danes make their friends early in life and friend groups travel through the years. I didn’t have this opportunity, and since Middelfart lacked individuals my age, I found it lonely at times. I spent time with my young host siblings and they were wonderful but the age gap and communication barrier made it difficult to engage with them like I would have with people my own age. That being said, Denmark was an incredible experience and I would go back and do it in a heartbeat (provided I was in a town with people my age!). If you had asked me a year ago if I thought I would go to Denmark for two months, I would have chuckled awkwardly and told you no. I still feel nerves at the thought of going abroad, but I now I have solid proof that I can do it, and I would succeed in doing so. I have friends, photos, a changed personality, a better professional understanding and improved portfolio, and lifelong memories that are exactly the evidence that show that if I--this shy, quiet, introverted girl can do it-- the NGE succeeded in doing its job.

Rotary District 7190 Foundation Event

Thursday, November 19, 2015 109th Airlift Wing, Stratton ANG Base

1 Air National Guard Road, Schenectady, NY

Dear Rotarians and Guests, Please join us on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at the Stratton ANG Base in Scotia as we celebrate Rotary Foundation month and The Rotary Foundation's first 98 years of “doing good in the world.” We invite you to become a member of the Honorary Committee by making a $100 or more contribution to the Annual Fund between July 1 and November 1, 2015 or have a Rotary Foundation Direct (TRF Direct) account in the amount of $100 or more. Your contributions to The Rotary Foundation help to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty around the world. Rotarians around the world have led the charge in the eradication of polio since 1985 and now we are closer than ever before to this goal. Nigeria is on the brink of becoming polio free, without a case of wild polio-virus in almost one year. While it is too early to celebrate, Nigeria is poised to be taken off the list of polio-endemic countries by WHO in September, leaving only two polio-endemic countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan. Our commitment to polio eradication needs to remain strong, so we are asking you to consider an extra $25 contribution to Polio Plus, becoming a member of the Gift to the World Committee. The overall theme for the Foundation Event this year will be to recognize and salute District 7190 Rotarians who are military veterans. One of the ways we can recognize our veterans is to help advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Please see the attached Honorary Committee Form for more details. We look forward to seeing you on November 19, 2015 as we continue “doing good in the world.” Yours in Rotary Service, Olive P. Scott, PDG – 1995-96 Honorary Committee, Chair

HELP ROTARY WIN THE FIGHT AGAINST POLIO Here are the top 5 reasons to

END POLIO NOW!

1. The human cost: If we choose to control polio rather than eradicate it, polio could rebound to 10 million cases in the next 40 years.

2. Its achievable: We have the tools to end polio and the means to reach all children. The new bivalent vaccine successfully targets the two remaining strains of polio in one dose.

3. It’s a good investment: An independent study published in the medical journal estimates that the $9 billion global investment in a polio-free world will net an economic benefit of $40 to $50 billion over the next 20 years.

4. It strengthens the system: Our polio eradication efforts have established an active disease surveillance network in all countries that is being used for other health interventions such as measles vaccinations, deworming tablets, and mosquito bed nets.

5. It sets the stage: The ability to reach all children with the polio vaccine is proof of concept that we can succeed on our next major global health initiative.
