This year the conference venue has been moved to Palau Macaya, a modernist building located near the center of Barcelona. La Caixa Foundation has lent this space for the fourth edition of Barcelona PR Meeting, as it did last year with Cosmocaixa.

Palau Macaya is located in Passeig de Sant Joan, next to Diagonal in a modernist mansion built between 1989 and 1901 by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Since 1947, Palau Macaya has been connected to La Caixa Foundation, when it housed the first Educational Institute for deaf and blind people. Later, in the early 70s, it became a cultural center. The building was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya on 1976.

Since then, this architectural marvel has hosted a global program that fosters collaboration and synergies with structures and institutions of the realm of thought, the social sciences, environmental conservation and the search for sustainability.

Barcelona PR Meeting #4 Configuring Intelligences for 21C Public Relations is the fourth International Conference to be staged annually by the Open University of Catalonia, the Pompeu Fabra University and the University of Waikato. The conference will be held in Barcelona on 26 and 27 June 2014.

Public relation acknowledges the present as a time of rapid change, turbulence, and even transformation. This conference explores what configurations of knowledge might best fit the field to these challen-ges. Since at least Howard Gardner’s (1993) Multiple Intelligences, there has been interest on what kinds of thinking and what kinds

of knowledge are appropriate to changing environments -notably Gardner’s (2009) own Five Minds for the Future.

NB we realise that for many in PR the classic cases, responses and strategies may still be capable of being configured to meet current and coming challenges so we also invite participants to continue present that material and argue for its ongoing relevance. The conference invites a wide range of contributions: that reflect, and that reflect on, the spectrum of possibilities of these conditions; that address current issues and trends; and that speculate on future pathways.

The old Hospital Santa Creu i Sant Pau is a reference modernist building designed by architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, who was listed as Historic Artistic Monument in 1978 and World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. With more than six centuries of history, the Hospital Sant Pau is the largest exhibition Modernist and one of Europe’s oldest hospital institutions.

The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau was the result of the merge of six hospitals in the city of Barcelona in 1401. The hospital was located, at the very beginning, in the Raval District, and it was a perfect example of Catalan Civil Gothic architecture. Half a century later, in the late nineties, it was decided to construct a new building because the old one became too small compared to population growth and medical progress. Lluis Domènec i Muntaner was asked to design it and, thanks to the bequest of the Catalan banker Pau Gil, on 15 January 1902, the first stone of the new hospital was laid.
