Barcelona, Spain Barcelona is a cosmopolitan seaside city with a well- established dynamic retail market. The city is Europe’s ninth most attractive location for international retailers and ranks 35th out of 140 in our global index, providing some of Spain’s best and most appealing retail locations. Many tourists are attracted by its rich culture, fabulous architecture, and a world-class drinking and dining scene. Foreign shoppers contribute up to 80% of the total retail sales in the city centre. High street Barcelona’s main shopping area is located in the Eixample neighbourhood, centred on the prestigious and luxurious Paseo de Gracia. The area combines expensive shops, such as Michael Kors, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana with great architecture. Other popular streets within Eixample are Rambla Catalunya, Diagonal and Portal de l’Angel which have exclusive pedestrianised areas. Major national and international brands are located on these streets including Superdry, Zara and MANGO. Retailer demand across the wider city continues to strengthen, fuelled by rising retail sales and improving economic conditions, pushing up prime rent levels in the main retail areas. However demand for high quality retail space is particularly strong, as supply remains limited and international brands continue to show interest in the city. Dior, UNIQLO and Céline are some of the latest international entrants to the market. Shopping centres Barcelona’s most important shopping centres include Maquinista, Splau, Diagonal Mar, L´illa Diagonal and Glories. Some of these schemes are going through refurbishments, Les Glories shopping centre’s redevelopment and extension will be completed in 2017, finishing its repositioning which started successfully with the opening of the ‘El Mercat’ food market concept. La Maquinista’s proposed extension will be executed in the medium term; as will Baricentro shopping centre’s extension of 12,000 sqm. In addition, by the end of 2016, a new 27,000 sqm outlet center will open in Viladecans, near the airport and in the long term a new urban shopping centre is planned for Esplugues de Llobregat.
