Woodworking craftsmanship in BlackallThe Blackall State School

manual arts room was host to a number of keen woodworkers this week with experienced craftsmen Laurens Otto and Geoffrey Hannah conducting a six day workshop.

The annual Woody’s Workshop this year focused on creating ammonia fumed oak crafts tables with people from Yandina, Roma, Toowoomba, Rockhampton and Brisbane participating in the workshop.

Ammonia fuming is a darkening process in which ammonia gas reacts with the tannin in the timber.

The timber is placed in a fuming chamber with containers of ammonia, until the timber has

reached the desired colour. The ten participants enjoyed

learning techniques such as fuming, carving and upholstery, working on some of their own projects as well as the fumed table.

Geoffrey Hannah has been conducting workshops in Blackall for approximately 20 years with Laurens Otto also visiting for a number of years.

Many of the participants at the workshop had previously attended other workshops with Mr Hannah and Mr Otto and had returned to continue work on projects, whilst others participants were attending for the first time, including Blackall residents Jenny Turner

and Martin Lloyd. Workshop organiser Lesley

Heatley said she was pleased with the turnout for the workshop and it was great to be able to use the accommodation at the Blackall Living Arts Centre for visiting participants.

“It wouldn’t be possible to come together like this without the living arts centre,” Lesley said.

Roma visitor Dorinda Schwennesen said she was enjoying the camaraderie of the workshops and meeting Blackall locals.

“It’s the first time I’ve been to Blackall and it’s a lovely way to see the town,” Ms Schwennesen said.

The weaner sale conducted by the combined agents on Thursday June 23 saw just on 5000 head yarded with a keen panel of buyers looking to purchase the quality stock presented. The upgrade of the yards continues with further pens being built and an old wooden race section due to be demolished and replaced with additional selling pens. Spelling is now a major part of the services offered at the sale yards and Blackall is well placed to capitalise on this growing section of the livestock industry. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council is working towards presenting livestock sale yards of exceptional standard and reputation in western Queensland.

Recently I was surprised to learn that Angel Flight has made 86 flights into Blackall and Tambo to give their wonderful volunteer support for our community members. Each year, since its inception, Blackall Tambo Regional Council has supported the Outback Angel Flight Trail Blazer Rally. Last year we were the final stop and celebrated with a very successful “Teddy Bears Picnic” in Tambo and a sell out “Sixties Dance” in Blackall. I am sure we will be very actively engaged in the next rally which will be held in April 2012.

Tambo will be the new home for two members of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Department. The positions have been filled and I am sure the friendly town of Tambo will welcome these officers and their families. The positions have come about due to the cypress harvesting and milling in the district and due to the concern of the Queensland government

has for the preservation of the cypress forest areas around Tambo. This is an issue which is of concern to the Blackall Tambo Regional Council as it affects an industry which has contributed much to the prosperity of Tambo.

The concern over the proposed carbon tax has certainly become the talking point of the nation. The imposition of a tax will certainly disadvantage all Australians; however, you will have to forgive me

as I fail to see how it will reduce emissions at all. The government will then recompense 90% of the community so as they will not be disadvantaged- why collect the tax at all? Surely government regulation would reduce carbon emissions?

The live export ban currently in place has also been a great cause for concern to all engaged in the livestock industry…. a knee jerk reaction by the Federal Government which could jeopardise the good trade relations with Indonesia for some years….not to mention the severe financial effect of the ban on the entire livestock industry, producers and all associated industries across the Top End and beyond.

I was delighted to be able to view the latest exhibition at the Grassland Gallery in Tambo. “The Hungry Caterpillar” exhibition by the students of the Tambo State School is a very special treat in the gallery and students have excelled themselves in the pursuit of the very best effect with wonderful interpretation and embellishments. They certainly had a great command of their subject and caught it well!

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

I have been informed that country music singer Graeme Rodger is now staying on to perform at the caravan park throughout July and August. I had the priviledge of going down to listen to him play one night recently and it was an enjoyable hour of entertainment. It’s rare that we get the chance to experience live music here

in Blackall, and I feel that we should take the chance support it whenever we can.

Performances like this are also a great drawcard for tourists.

Rehearsals are in full swing for the Radio Plays performance at the end of July which promises to be a truly unique event for our region.

During the golden age of radio in the 1930s and 1940s, radio plays were regularly performed in front of a live audience as they were broadcast. This mode of entertain slowly went into decline with the advent of television, but is slowly being resurrected as chance to reconnect with some of the magic felt by those original audiences.

Barron Agencies denied saleyard access

QANTAS FLIGHT DEPARTURE DEADLINES

Passengers departing on QANTAS flights from Blackall Airport are reminded of the need to arrive at the Airport at least45 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the flight. There are very good and valid reasons for requiringpassengers to arrive 45 minutes prior to departure as the check in process can be lengthy and may not be withoutproblems which need resolution.

For passengers with special needs or those who are concerned that they may encounter ticketing problems for theirflights or later connecting flights it is advisable to arrive earlier than the 45 minute deadline to ensure these issues canbe addressed.

Once the plane has landed passengers who have not checked in will be considered as “no show” and will be unable todepart on that flight.

Everyone wants the flight to depart on time so to be fair to passengers who have arrived in the required timeframe (45minutes prior to departure), baggage check in closure times (30 minutes prior to scheduled departure time) and checkin closure times (15 minutes prior to scheduled departure time) will be strictly enforced for future flights.

New Blackall business Barron Agencies’ application to operate a fortnightly Tuesday sale has been denied after a special meeting of the Blackall Tambo Regional Council held on Wednesday.

The decision came after months of discussions with Barron Agencies asking council to be allowed to either operate in conjunction with the Thursday sale operated by the Blackall Livestock Agent’s Association (BLAA) or to conduct a fortnightly Tuesday sale.

BLAA has an agreement with the council allowing them access to the yards from 6am Wednesday to 7pm Friday each week and council reaffirmed that it would allow BLAA to conduct weekly sales at the Blackall Saleyards on

Thursday on an exclusive basis. In a press release mayor Jan

Ross said council believed the introduction of another agent who was not a member of the BLAA operating at the same sale would be likely to cause confusion for vendors, buyers, transport operators and saleyard staff.

Cr Ross said the decision to deny the application to operate a Tuesday sale had been made after considering council business conducted at the sale yards other than cattle sales, animal welfare concerns, the capacity of the yards, movement of stock into and through the yards, staffing of the yards and buyer viability issues.

“Council has consulted widely to reach a decision which is mindful

of the importance of the value of an asset which is indeed a great contributor to the economic and social wealth of Blackall,” Cr Ross said.

“The Blackall Tambo Regional Council welcomes the establishment of a new business in Blackall and we wish them every success in their venture.”

The Barcoo Independent contacted Barron Agencies but they said they were unable to discuss the development at the time as they had not yet been informed of the decision by council.

Council also decided at the meeting to review the basis for selling at the Blackall sale yards and how agents operate from the yards.

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council is investigating the possibility of purchasing iPads or laptops for use during council meetings for electronic agendas.

Councillor Peter Skewes said council needed to embrace technology in order to have better access to information and for its’ environmental benefits.

“I’m a greenie and I don’t wish to keep using paper when we have other options,” Cr Skewes.

Councillor Grahame Schluter said he was opposed to the idea as he believed it was unnecessary.

“It doesn’t make you a better person by having a ‘you beaut’ computer,” Cr Schluter said.

An allocation will be made in the 2011/2012 budget to supply councillors with an electronic device within the next 12 months.

Nine ladies took part in the Blackall Cultural Association Patchwork Group’s Quilting Workshop with Pauline Rogers from Quilters World, Toowoomba on the weekend of July 11-12.

A participant in the workshop, Trethella Smith said she was excited by what was learnt.

“We learned how to use the darning foot to quilt any size quilt with freehand motion, any direction, and not have to keep moving the quilt itself around to change direction,” Trethalla said.

“Some mastered it well but others were encouraged to keep practising and it would bring success!”

Preparations are well underway for the Blackall Radio Plays performances at the end of July with director Ian Lawson visiting this week to conduct rehearsals on Wednesday and Thursday night.

Casts were decided for the two plays in early June with weekly rehearsals being held in preparation for the performance.

Radio Plays co-ordinator Hilary Perrett said the casting sessions were a huge success.

“There was great attendance at each session; a cast from each town was able to be formed and a number of people interested in helping backstage were also present,” said Ms Perrett.

The two plays, Queen Bea and

The Call of the Night Parrot were written as part of Miles National Radio Play competition and will be performed as part of the Queensland Music Festival.

Queen Bea will be performed by two different casts on each night while The Call of Night Parrot will be performed by a single cast.

Blackall residents are being warned by the Commonwealth Bank not to give out personal information or banking details over the phone after a number of fraudulent telephone calls within the district.

The offending callers have claimed to be from the Commonwealth Bank or the Office of Fair Trading and say they want to discuss account fees, in an attempt to find out bank account details.

Commonwealth Bank agency officer Vicky Cavanaugh said people shouldn’t give their account number over the phone unless they are entirely sure of the organisation’s identity and the purpose of the call.

“CBA does not ask for your account number, as we verify your identification through other verification methods,” Vicky said.

Anyone who receives a suspicious phone asking for account details is asked to notify the Commonwealth Bank Blackall branch.

On June 18-19 a mental health first aid workshop presented by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) was held in Blackall.

Mental illness is a diagnosable illness that affects a person’s thinking, emotional state and behaviour. It disrupts the person’s ability to work or carry out other daily activities and engage in satisfying personal relationships.

There are many forms of mental illness with the most common being anxiety and depression disorders.

Research shows that one in five Australians aged 16-85 suffer from some form of mental illness each year

The 12 hour workshop emphasised the importance of early intervention and how to apply current best practice first aid strategies to assist people experiencing the signs and symptoms of mental distress and illness.

Those participating gained a better understanding about anxiety disorders, depression, substance misuse disorder, psychosis including drug induced psychosis, people experiencing suicidal thoughts and people inflicting non-suicidal self injuries and the most effective way of approaching and assisting those in need.

Participants also learnt the ALGEE mental health first aid action plan which stands for:

Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis, Listen non-judgmentally, Give support and information, Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help and Encourage other supports

Ron Unwin, a social worker and cognitive behaviour therapist with RFDS Longreach said during the training that “the longer people delay in getting help and support, the more difficult their recovery can be. It is important that people are supported by family, friends and work colleagues at this time.”

Anyone who believe that they, a friend or family member is experiencing some form of mental illness is encouraged to seek assistance and to contact their GP to rule out any medical causes of symptoms.

Further support and information can be found at the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Longreach, the Blackall community service office or by contacting Beyond Blue or visiting their website.

The Blackall community service also has copies of acclaimed books “I Had A Black Dog” and “Living with a Black Dog” by Matthew and Ainsley Johnstone about living with depression available to borrow.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Just before Christmas, public submissions closed for comments on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Hancock Coal’s Alpha mine project, one of the first of at least five proposed mega mines projects in the Galilee Basin alone, projected to produce 160 million tonnes of thermal coal for export annually.

I have grave concerns over the plans of HPPL and total mistrust of the EIS process as a valid means of raising environmental concerns. Loud and unqualified endorsements of HPPL’s plans over a long period from all levels of government, including the regional council and mayor, the State Cabinet and Premier, and a

succession of Federal ministers, have effectively preempted and marginalized any concerns arising from the public at this stage.

It has become apparent, that worse than simply making a mockery of democracy, this EIS process is serving as face-saving façade for those blinded by anticipated profits from the mega mines planned for the Galilee Basin. However, when presented with the facts about likely longer-term impacts, it is hard to imagine that a majority of Australians would put material wealth ahead of ecological health. Most also seem to realize that the mining and burning of coal must cease.

Yet our governments continue

to attempt to simultaneously advance two entirely incompatible messages: That we must begin to reduce global carbon pollution and that we should proceed to extract ever increasing quantities of coal. Perhaps the burden of historical legalities is preventing us from dealing with serious present realities. In that case, let us put our minds and efforts into rectifying these flawed methods, rather than wasting precious time and energy on charades like this EIS process.

--Ian Hoch“Kerand”, Alpha

Concerns about environmental impact of Alpha coal mines

I write regarding the road work being undertaken on the Jericho road, by the Barcaldine Regional Council, under contract from Main Roads Department. Work commenced in May 2010. In September work ceased a few weeks prior to the commencement of the extensive wet season. The wet put an end to the ability to continue with the work until the end of March.

The job under construction has a detour along side of it. This undrained, unformed track over heavy black soil is untrafficable after moderate rain. Work on the road has not recommenced to

date, the contractor has not been seen on this job since September 2010. In an endeavour to find what is happening to this section of road, I wrote to the Blackall Tambo Regional Council asking what its future was.

Has the contractor walked off the job, if so is another contractor going to continue the work, if not when is work going to recommence? Has Council taken this matter up with Main Roads, and if not why not? Apparently my letter did not warrant a response, as to date I have not received one.

This road is a dedicated State Main Road and besides its purpose

to the travelling public, it serves as access to Blackall for several properties north-east of Blackall. It also provides access to the Blackall sale yards for cattle from the Yalleroi, Jericho and Alpha areas. These sale yards have been a success story for Blackall and any action; or in this case lack of action; which reduces access to them, could have a detrimental effect on the yards.

Although the road is not under council control, ratepayers expect council to pursue issues such as this with the relevant authority, in this case Main Roads Dept.

--Fred Rich

Local cancer support group, West ‘n Breast recently had their coiffeurs replenished with over $8550 going into their account. The money has been banked as a result of the Wine, Women and Song initiative held in Blackall earlier in the year.

“In an event with the multiple aims of bringing together communities to acknowledge women, celebrating local performing arts talent and raising much needed funds for local breast cancer support group, “West ‘n ‘Breast’, people rallied support to this local initiative,” said Avril Fazel, one of the event organisers.

“We are thrilled with the monetary outcome, but equally we are very proud of the goodwill that has come out of the event.”

Alison Shaw, a committee member went on to say, “our thanks go out to our generous community members, including, Peter and Melit Furneaux, (Melit is an active member of West’n Breast), the Dolinksi family, Value Liquor Brisbane Head

Office, QantasLink and GDL, Primac Elders and Landmark who generously supported the evening with donations and of course to all who attended and our 75 artists from Tambo, Blackall and Barcaldine.”

The evening was funded by the Regional Arts Development Funds, which is a partnership between the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council.

The money raised will provide much needed funds for women of west who are undergoing cancer treatments. It complements the funds being raised across the west by this very active group of determined women, with sausage sizzles, food sales at the Heartland Food Fiesta, a clothing range bearing the distinctive West ‘n Breast logo available at the post office and a stall at Westech later in the year.

The ball is now rolling on creating a new life for the Bushman’s Hotel building after a meeting held last Tuesday between members of the Barcoo Retirement Village Committee and consulting engineers George Baume and Associates from Barcaldine.

The Barcoo Retirement Village Committee recently received $10,000 from the Building Rural Communities Fund to investigate a new use for the building and is now calling for ideas to reinvigorate Blackall’s oldest building.

After inspecting the site, George Baume and Associates will produce an open area plan for the development of the building within the next few months.

Barcoo Retirement Village Committee spokesperson Terry Kingston said the committee was eager to receive suggestions from the Blackall community regarding new uses for the building.

“The more ideas we have, the better chance we have of putting Bushman’s to really good use in the town,” Terry said.

The committee already has two proposals for the building with suggestions it could be transformed into a men’s shed, or an art gallery.
