Letter from the President 2019 – No. 2
The year is well underway with courses and activities commencing for 2019. Please
keep a look out for changes and updates published in The BUZZ.
I am delighted to report that at the end of January, U3A Bendigo has 737 members
of whom 106 were welcomed in January with many joining on Enrolment Day.
Many members who joined in 2018 have signed up for 2019. At the end of January,
494 members had paid their annual fees, leaving 137 to renew by 31 March to
retain their eligibility to attend U3A activities. If you haven’t yet paid your dues, please do so as soon
as you can by contacting the office.
Our program has over 60 courses and activities on offer for 2019. Descriptions, times and locations
are listed in the prospectus, available online at www.u3abendigo.com or a hard copy can be obtained
by calling into the office at St Mary’s on Tuesday mornings where friendly staff will be happy to
provide assistance in selecting suitable courses or activities.
The most attended activities include the walking groups, aerobics, gardening group, choir, discussion
group, book clubs, table tennis and yoga, which has two groups this year. If you were not able to
enrol on Enrolment Day and would like to participate in an activity, please contact the convenor
listed in the prospectus and let them know if you are going to attend. New participants are always
welcome.
As well as ongoing activities, there is a broad selection of fascinating topics chosen for the Tuesday
morning short course program. During 2019 you can learn about such diverse subjects as Caroline
Chisholm, The Importance of Ritual, and Climate Warming – a scientific approach. If you are
interested in attending a short course, please book early as numbers are limited.
Keep an eye out too for the monthly social gatherings held on the fourth Wednesday of the month
from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at St Mary’s Hall. Social gatherings feature guest speakers, musical
performances, banquets, quizzes and lots more, plus they are a great way to meet new people or
catch up with old friends. Also watch out for our regular bus trips. The first for the year, on
Thursday, 4 April, is a trip to Barmah and includes a cruise, morning tea and lunch all for just $95.
For more information, see the flyer in this edition of The BUZZ. Remember it is important to book
and pay early to make sure you have a seat.
On behalf of the U3A Bendigo Committee of Management, may I wish everyone a great year. I
encourage all new members to come along to New Members’ Day, on Wednesday, 27 March from 12
noon. I would also like to congratulate Rupert Hosking who has been a member of U3A Bendigo for
29 years. Rupert has reluctantly decided it is time to retire from the many activities he has enjoyed
over the years. We wish you well Rupert and hope that you will always recall with fondness the
many people you have met at U3A.

COURSE COORDINATOR’S NOTICES
Courses and activities should be well underway by now, and we hope that you’re
finding pleasure and fulfillment from the classes that you have chosen for this term.
With growing numbers, there are a few inevitable last-minute adjustments to the
program at the beginning of the year, as some of you would have already noted on
Enrolment Day. Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Beginners’ Italian Class,
and there have been a couple of changes of Convenor. Tony has unfortunately had to
step down as leader of Ukelele, but Theresa Smith has kindly offered to take over his six-week
introductory course. Brenda Stevens-Chambers has taken over from Alison Ross as convenor of
Poetry Appreciation, and increasing numbers have led to the creation of another Mah Jong group,
and possibly another Book Group.
More information on these will appear in next month’s BUZZ.
Our sincere thanks, as usual, go to all these convenors, who take the time to ensure that things run
smoothly from week to week.

Library News
March 2019
Library News is back in ‘The Buzz’ after a break of several months and now there are two
librarians:
Barbara McDougall (former librarian) and
Mary Fry (who looked after the library when Barbara was on extended “sick leave” last
year).
We are conducting a review of the library books and culling some of the older ones to make
space on shelves for new donations. The Biography Section is completed and we expect to
have the Fiction and Non-Fiction Sections done by the time this News is published in the
Buzz. Also we are organising a Classical Literature Section. Books that are removed are
being donated to the YMCA.
Information about the library and the procedure for borrowing books and DVDs is given in
the Library Use Guide on the U3A Website: click on Library News and then on Library
Use Guide.
There is also a notice on the Borrow Books shelf which outlines the procedure for
borrowing books and DVDs. All books and DVDs can be borrowed, using an honour
system – please sign the appropriate Borrow Book. The library is available when the U3A
complex is open.
Barbara and Mary welcome suggestions about the library.

Funding is available to purchase equipment. Finally, with coding now a mandatory part of the school curriculum, we may have the opportunity to interact with a local pri-mary school. Meeting times and venue have yet to be decided. GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS Our garden group did not meet on the second Friday of this month of February, our regular meeting
date, due to the extreme hot weather we have been having, so there is very little for me to write
about, I could of course talk about the death due to the heat of many of my azaleas; the unwellness
of the cordylines and flax, especially those in pots (they are dead); then the death of small new
plants which had not had enough time to become established. It is a learning experience, I will be
looking for hardier plants in the future, especially the exotics. All the native plants survived the
heat even with so little water. Here are a few gardening tips I recently came across----
Top Gardening Hints
~~ Make a label using a stick and an indelible black marker to indicate where you have planted
bulbs; it will avoid you forgetting or accidentally plunging a spade blade through them.
~~ Collect old absorbent kitchen sponges, give them a clean, and then place them in the bottom of
pots before filling with potting mix to help retain moisture.
~~ Resist the urge to make wide garden beds (you will inevitably have trouble tending them).
~~ Recycle egg cartons as seed-raising trays, fill the compartments with seed-raising mix, sow your
seed, then place your cartons in a tray of water so water seeps through. Once seedlings are up, cut
away each compartment and plant out as is.
March 17
~~ Plant alyssum, carnations, cinerarias, cornflowers, Canterbury bells, delphiniums, hollyhocks,
Iceland poppies, lupins, stocks and verbena.
~~ Start planting spring flowering bulbs such as anemones, daffodils, freesias,
grape hyacinths,, ixias, jonquils lachenalias, sparaxis and tritonias.
~~ Rev up vegie gardens with plantings of Asian-greens, broad beans, broccoli,
brussels sprouts, cabbages, carrots, cauliflowers, garlic, kale, lettuces. onions,
parsnips, radishes and spinach.
March 25 ~~ Start major planting jobs while there is still warmth in the soil and those
sweltering days of extreme heat have ended.
~` Trim back foliage that was damaged during the scorching days of summer and fertilise plants to
get them back on track.
~~Get in a few native Aussie show-offs such as grevilleas, bottlebrush (callistemon) and banksias.
~~ If a tulip grower, put your lifted bulbs from last season into your refrigerator’s crisper for four to
six weeks to prime them for planting.
Happy gardening, Barb and Yvonne
