Letter from the President 2019 – No. 11
Welcome to 2019 and the first BUZZ for the year. While most classes have been in recess during January, giving convenors a well earned break, some have continued to meet including the walking groups where they have experienced numerous adventures throughout the month. I trust everyone has had an enjoyable break and kept out of the heat. We have certainly had some very hot and dry days so far this summer. Many of us will have been busy keeping up with watering the garden or trying to stay cool in doors. A highlight for the month is our annual enrolment day where many members renewed their U3A membership and choose classes and activities for the year. While some spaces fill quickly there remain ample spots in others. So if you didn’t secure your first choices, perhaps it might be worth considering some activities or classes not tried before. There are over 60 to choose from, and you never know until you try if you might find it enjoyable and satisfying to step outside your usual comfort zone. My thanks to all those involved in making enrolment day a great success; especially to the convenors, coordinating team and our wonderful caterers. If you are yet to renew, please remember you have until the end of March until you are no longer entitled to attend classes or activities. If you would like to try out a new activity or are joining for the first time, U3A rules allow you to attend up to three times before you need to join. In November, U3A Bendigo applied for a community grant from the City of Greater Bendigo to assist in funding our new membership management system. As advised previously, our existing membership system is nearing capacity with no ability for it to be expanded or upgraded as well as there being no further technology support from the developer. As this is a vital resource to manage our every-growing membership, the Committee of Management decided to adopt the U3A Network Victoria preferred system gradually being introduced across the state. The new system is known as UMAS and will provide significant improvements in membership management. While the cost of installing UMAS itself is negligible, there are numerous associated cost such as IT equipment, specific development upgrades and training. It was hoped these would be funded through the grant. Unfortunately, the City of Greater Bendigo has again rejected our grant application. This is the second time in the last year that Council has refused to support U3A Bendigo, which is particularly difficult to understand as we are going through a period of growth. It is expected that during 2019 U3A Bendigo will reach 700 members. As a result of not securing funding support from Council, the Committee of Management will be reviewing all costs and looking to see where savings can be made. Suggestions have been coming forward including finding a way to reduce the number of newsletters mailed each month. This is one of our major costs. Please consider carefully if you need The BUZZ mailed to you every month. The BUZZ is always available at our website and a hard copy can be picked up at the office. Your thoughtful consideration of this matter is appreciated. If you wish to make changes to the way in which you would like to receive The BUZZ, please let our office know. May I take a moment to welcome everyone back for the year, especially our new members, and to say another big thank you to our convenors for helping make U3A Bendigo a great learning and social group of people. My best wishes to you all for 2019.

SOCIAL GATHERING—GUEST SPEAKER Kerry Graham will be our speaker at our Social Gathering, 1.30, February 27, at St Mary’s High Street Kangaroo Flat. Kerry recently returned to Australia after four years as Principal of VISS, an international school in “Sharjah”, one of the seven Arab Emirates. Sharjah is the third largest and third most populous of the sev-en Emirates, the national language is Arabic. After a long career in teaching, last seventeen as a principal, Kerry and husband Rob moved to Sharjah where Kerry had charge of 1600 students, aged three to nineteen year old’s. Kerry was looking for a chal-lenge and a change of pace, she certainly found it there. She will also be happy to talk about Australia’s education system, much in the news at the moment.
COURSE COORDINATOR’S NOTICES
We hope that Enrolment Day on January 23 gave you the opportunity to make
some informed choices about U3A activities for the year ahead. The range in
2019 is bigger than ever, and perhaps the main problem for many people is
fitting in all the things that they would like to be doing!
One item that is not mentioned in the Prospectus, but which you might have
noticed on Enrolment Day was the additional Yoga class. Thanks to new
member, Marilyn Grossman, we will now have two groups operating for part of the year.
Existing teacher Isabel Truscott will continue her classes in the usual Tuesday timeslot.
Marilyn’s program will run in four blocks on Thursday mornings from 11.30 – 12.30 (the
first from February 28 – April 4). Thanks to both convenors for offering this very popular
activity.
As mentioned in the December BUZZ, we are offering a number of other new courses in
2019: Beginners’ Italian, Recorder, Popular Music Appreciation, Health and Wellness,
along with an extra Water Colour class.
SHORT COURSES
When and Where: Tuesdays from 10am -12noon. Room 1,
Tuesday. February 5, 12 and 26: The Life and Times of Queen Victoria.
Queen Victoria is one of the world's most unforgettable historical figures. As time passes
she becomes more fascinating as further archived material becomes available. For example,
Australian Julia Baird has written a brilliant new biography about Queen Victoria. These
resources, the recent TV series and Brenda's recent visit to Queen Victoria's holiday home,
Osborne House, on the Isle of Wight, will create three enjoyable not to be missed Tuesday
sessions.
Coming up in the weeks ahead:
Tom Comerford: Caroline Chisholm
Christine Hadrick: The Importance of Ritual
John Neil: Climate Warming - a Scientific Approach
Course Coordination Team: Helen Reeves, Lyn Goodall, Lex Milne, Wilf Savage

Coding and Robotics Group to be Convened The digital technology revolution has left many of us wondering how the technology works. A new Coding and Ro-botics Group will be convened in 2019. The group will decide, from a vast field of possibilities, the topics to be cov-ered: automatic appliances, household control, autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, stock market trading al-gorithms…. Funding is available to purchase equipment. The group will decide the type of devices we will procure to gain practical coding experience: robotic kits, PIC and Arduino controllers are among the possibilities. Finally, with coding now a mandatory part of the school curriculum, we may have the opportunity to interact with a local pri-mary school. Meeting times and venue have yet to be decided. If you would like to be involved in establishing the group or to assist as a tutor, please email Michael Gallagher via [email protected]. For more information, please talk to Michael on Enrolment Day. If you are interested in working with other U3A members to expand your under-standing of how digital devices are programmed to perform tasks and act autonomously, watch this space. GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS I hope our gardening members are coping with this spell of very hot
weather and not spending too much time in the hot sun, early morning or
late in the evening, is my gardening time. It seems so long ago to be
writing about our last garden visit but the garden we visited late
November was quite special, so much history. The garden belongs to
Glenda and John Elliot, a big old home in High Street, Kangaroo Flat,
John had traced the long history of this house and garden. The house was
originally built by two brothers who had made their fortune with shops
selling hardware to people working in the gold fields, but one of the
brothers was killed by a train when he went to pick up some goods. The
house changed hands many times after that, some might remember the nursing home, the
home for wayward boys, who became more wayward after their treatment at this home.
However, John has done a wonderful job of restoring the house and garden, a enormous bay
tree takes centre stage in the front garden, beautiful , John has planted an orchard on part
of the land, it looked so healthy and ready to bear fruit. Morning tea followed a lovely
morning.
Our garden group had our Christmas break-up lunch at the Botanic Hotel in White Hills,
the food was excellent, it was quiet and well air conditioned, I am just mentioning this as
the hotel would have been having a really hard time with all the road works on the highway
going on over the last few months, if you are looking for somewhere nice to go for a meal, we
can recommend the Botanic hotel, it is immediately next door to the Botanic gardens
entrance.
A few gardening hints I read in a newspaper called “The Land “ on my way home from
Sydney --- Mulch is very important in this hot weather, any mulch is fine to use, it helps to
keep moisture in the ground and there will be fewer weeds. Rose pruning can go on all
summer, cutting back branches to a stem with five leaves after their flowers have faded to
encourage new flowering stems. Spring flowering lavenders can also be pruned in January.
Rock roses (Cistus species) have finished blooming by now and can be pruned hard. This is a
good time to take some cuttings, Jerusalem Sage, your favourite winter-flowering Daphne
(D. odora), and another sweetly scented winter bloomer, the invaluable wallflower “Bowles
Mauve”. It flowers for most of the year but needs a hard trim in January. Dip cuttings in a
hormone treatment, put into a pot with a plastic bag over their head to maintain moisture
and park in the shade, they should make roots by autumn. Lastly don’t forget your citrus
trees they need plenty of water and fertiliser this hot weather.
Happy gardening, Barb and Yvonne
