There can be no more welcome sight in British filmmakingthan the return of Peter Greenaway to the form that led toan unprecedented string of successes throughout the 1980s.Nightwatching has taken several years to secure its releasein the UK so don’t miss the opportunity to see a truly originalfilmmaker back on the big screen. The other hot tip from this programme is Frederic Wiseman’sstunning documenatry about the Paris Opera Ballet La Danse -a monumental piece of filmmaking that engages and awes in equal measure. Finally, while the world cup has scared away some big releases in June it makes room for some lessmainstream fare. That is if, like me, you don’t count WernerHerzog’s typically mad posturing through an unsuspectingNew Orleans in Bad Lieutenant as standard Hollywood fare.Colin Orr, Film Programmer

Saturday 8 May / 8pmSunday 9 May / 3pmTuesday 11 May / 5pmDirector John FrankenheimerCast Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra, Angela Landsbury, Janet LeighUSA 1962 / B&W / 2hr 6m A welcome re-issue of this political suspense classicabout the drug-hypnosis-induced behaviour thattransforms a U.S. Army Korean War hero into ahuman bomb. Frankenheimer's version of RichardCondon's tragically prophetic novel looks even betternow than it did then. Its greatest virtue lies in itsbrilliant balancing act between the twin lunaciesof the Right and Left. Among a marvellous castthe startlingly monstrosity of Lansbury stands out.A masterly deconstruction of Cold War ideology.

City of Life& Death [15]

Tuesday 8 June / 5pmWednesday 9 June / 8pmDirectors Lu Chuan Cast Liu Ye, Gao Yuanyuan, Hideo NakaizumiChina 2009 / B&W / Subtitles / 2hr 16mNanjing (previously known as Nanking) was China's capitalin the 1930s, until the government and army withdrew toinland areas at the end of 1937 as the invading JapaneseImperial Army advanced. Over the following three months, countless civilians were massacred and the city was laid towaste in what has come to be known as 'the rape of Nanjing’.Lu Chuan's (Kekexili: Mountain Patrol) elegiac film approachesthe subject in an unorthodox manner linking the overarchingstory line of the fall of the city with close-ups of individuallives and deaths. Stunning.

Life During Wartime [15]

Tuesday 1 -Thursday 3 June / 8pmDirector Todd SolondzCast Shirley Henderson, Ciarán Hinds, Charlotte RamplingUSA 2009 / Colour / 1hr 36mTen years after Todd Solondz's highly acclaimed Happinesscomes a sequel of sorts, or more like a riff on the earlierfilm, as the director takes liberties with the characters andtheir histories, as well as casting a different (and intriguing)set of actors. But from its familiar opening scene onwards,Life During Wartime sees Solondz doing what he does best, presenting us with fascinating, flawed characters strugglingto find love and meaning in a generally unsympatheticworld. Their stories are poignant, funny, disturbing, shocking or sad, and as they intersect or run parallel, createan emotionally resonant portrait of modern life and love.

As with his reinventionof the Roman epic in Galdiator, Scott goesback to basics to tell the story of how anarcher in the service of King Richard theLionheart came to be known as Robin Hood, the most famous outlaw of English Folklore.Beginning after the death of King Richardat the siege of Chalus Chabrol, the filmfollows Robin on his rise to infamy amongthe English Barons and the newly crownedKing John. Featuring historically accuratecharacters such as Sir William Marshalland grounded in reality (in a similarway to Gladiator), this is not Robin Hoodas you have seen him before, ratherthe making of the legend we have cometo know him as now.

Bad Lieutenant-Portof Call: New Orleans [18]

Friday 18 & Saturday 19 June / 5pmSunday 20 June / 3pmMonday 21 & Tuesday 22 June / 8pmDirector Werner HerzogCast Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val KilmerUSA 2009 / Colour / 2hr 2mTerence McDonagh is a rogue New Orleans police detectivewho is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs -while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields hisbadge as often as he wields his gun in order to get hisway. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he becomesa high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins ofNew Orleans with authority and abandon. A loose remakeof Abel Ferrara's 1992 immorality tale, Herzog's deliberatelybonkers approach, matched by Cage's crazed hammyperformance make the whole hugely compelling andthe film's murky atmosphere is packed with pitch-blackhumour that oozes from the screen.

The HeadlessWoman [12A]

Wednesday 23 & Thursday 24 June / 5pmDirector Lucrecia MartelCast Maria Onetto, Claudia CanteroArgentina 2009 / Colour / Subtitles / 1hr 29mBeautiful, affluent dentist Veronica hits somethingviolently while she is speeding along a dust road. But what is it: a dog? "Nothing short of a masterpiece" The Guardian.

The KillerInside Me [18]

Friday 25 & Sunday 27 June / 8pmMonday 28 & Tuesday 29 June / 8pmWednesday 30 & Thursday 1 July / 5pmDirector Michael WinterbottomCast Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, Jessica AlbaUK/US 2010 / Colour / 1hr 49mMichael Winterbottom’s already notorious newthriller is based on the classic 1952 pulp novel byJim Thompson that took the hard boiled noir worldof the 40’s and mixed in the more contemporarydepictions of the psycho-sexual violence of thesmall town serial killer - who in this case alsohappens to be the town’s Sheriff. Winterbottomuses the placid boy-scout features of Casey Afflekto great effect and mixes in a bit of Edward Hopper’svisual style with a dash of David Lynch’s Blue Velvet.Certainly not for the squeamish, it is a thoughtfuland stylish addition to the genre jumping ladderthat is Winterbottom’s career.
