The reason has less to do with gender equality than with where the ax is falling... 82 percent of the job losses have befallen men, who are heavily represented in distressed industries...Women tend to be employed in areas like education and health care, which are less sensitive to economic ups and downs… Women may be safer in their jobs, but tend to find it harder to support a family… Even in full-time jobs, women earn 80 cents for each dollar of their male counterparts’ income, according to the government data. Over the 12 months, the unemployment rate of men with college degrees rose to 4.1 percent, from 2 percent; the figure for educated women went from 2.1 percent to 3.9 percent. Over all, the unemployment rate for women of 25 and older was 6.2 percent in February 2009, while that for men was 9 percent. SUMMER CONTRACTSThe academic year ends on Friday, May 15, 2009. You will have to submit all paperwork for the academic year by that day. If you plan to work after May 15th, you will need a new contract for the summer. You can begin coming in for summer contracts at the end of April. Even though the timesheet process will be automated beginning May 16, you will still need to come to Career Development during contract hours to complete contracts for all positions worked.

Universal Music is currently seeking interns to work in their Special Markets Department for 2 full days per week. Interns will assist a sales team in creating compilation CDs. They will provide customer service, enter tracks into licensing system, learn the process of creating premium CDs, and pitch music promotions.

The White House Project is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization which seeks to advance female leadership. The organization seeks a program intern to report directly to the National Program Director and Intern Coordinator. The intern will provide project support, assist with training, complete a special intern initiative with a team, research organizations and leaders, and perform other duties as requested.

The American Cancer Society in Brooklyn seeks summer interns to work in their Patient and Family Services Department for three full days a week. The intern will work directly with patients in an outpatient chemotherapy setting.

An interest in the arts, especially dance, is strongly recommended. The work is fast-paced, and a high degree of quality is expected.

Urban Omnibus, an experimental, multimedia project that spotlights critical analysis, local expertise and innovative interventions in the built environment of NYC, currently seeks summer interns to be its eyes on the street. Interns will file story ideas about architecture, infrastructure and environment and help to produce interactive media about New York City and its ongoing urban development.

tar mag, a new socially conscious arts, culture and fashion bi-annual magazine, seeks editorial interns to start immediately working three days per week. Interns must have fantastic writing, editing and verbal skills, be exceptionally detail oriented, analytical, and have a firm knowledge of current writers, trends and topics. Interns will spend the majority of their time researching writers, crafting pitches, and reviewing ideas and submissions.
