OUR RESORT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO CAST A SPELL OVER ANYONE WHO VISITS. Tucked away on 3,300 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’ll find
a unique getaway experience that will relax your body and restore your spirit. Originally
built as an opulent estate for Godfrey Barnsley and his family in the 19th century,
the grounds have been transformed into a world-class resort like no other.
Treat your senses with our luxurious lodgings and gourmet cuisine. Discover the
tranquility of our immaculate gardens, historic ruins, and European-style spa.
The memories you create during your stay with us won’t be just moments to recall,
but rather a living stream of experiences you’ll cherish forever.
enjoy a stroll through our beautiful, historic gardens. guided tours are also available.
Soon after settling into your comfortably appointed accommodations here at Barnsley
Gardens Resort, you’ll almost certainly find yourself on a leisurely stroll through the grounds.
Inevitably, you’ll wind your way through to the ruins of Mister Godfrey Barnsley’s historic
19th century Italianate style manor and the stunning gardens that surround it.
And then it hits you: This place is alive with history.
A true American success story. Opulence. Timeless love. Tragic loss. A spirit’s visitation.
Civil War. A tornado. Decline. Rebirth. Hints of it all can be found throughout our grounds,
if you know where to look.
barnsley manor house
The gardens surrounding the historic Barnsley Manor House consist of strolling paths that take the visitor through sweeps of
daffodils, along bog gardens, and through beautiful native azaleas. There are benches, Adirondack chairs, and gazebos located in
every enclave of the garden for guests to picnic, read a good book, or simply reflect.
THE OSAGE-ORANGE (Hedge row maclura pomifera)
The seeds of these grand old specimens were sent to the Barnsley estate in the 1840s. The intended use was to create a thicket fence
to enclose his cultivated land. However, these rapid-growing trees have such a tough wood that Barnsley was never able to find
shears strong enough to keep them pruned. Thus, they have grown into the large, twisted trees that we have today.
woodland gardens
ANTIQUE ROSES
The Barnsley estate was known as the rose showcase of the South. He collected hundreds of roses, including the unusual and new
introduction of the day, the Green Rose (Rosa chinesis var. virdiflora). Today, the garden boasts over 150 varieties of antique roses.
Some were acquired as pass-along plants from local gardeners who had kept them in their gardens for generations.
The rose display peaks in May.
THE BOXWOOD PARTERRE (Buxus sempervirens)
The oval-shaped boxwood parterre garden that graces
the front of the manor was planted in the 1840s and
still thrives to this day. It’s remarkable that, after all
its sometimes troubled history, guests today can
meander through the very same walks and hedges
that have stood there for over 160 years.
It is with understandable pride that our gardeners
take great care in weaving seasonal color into this
garden utilizing heirloom plants. However, the garden
is at its peak in the warm Southern spring — when
fragrant shrubs, flowering bulbs and old-fashioned
perennials steal the show. We encourage you to find
one of the quiet benches that surround the fountain
in the center of the garden and soak in the tranquility
of this truly unique place.
THE DOWNING INFLUENCE
Godfrey Barnsley was a man inspired and influenced by
the famed contemporary architect, landscape designer
and horticulturalist Andrew Jackson Downing. Native
to New York and widely popular in the Northeast
for his Italianate and gothic revival architecture,
Downing would also become known as the father of
American landscape design. The grand manor house
was commissioned to evoke not only the zenith of
Downing’s Italianate style, but also the undying love
Godfrey held for his wife, Julia. It is a real treasure to
have a Downing-style home here in the Southeast.
native to central and southern china, the china fir (cunninghamia lanceolata) is an evergreen conifer that was introduced to the garden as the manor house when it was planted, the china fir required the fastening together of several wagons to transport it six miles from
in the 1850s. nearly as tall the railroad hub to the estate.

been planted with excellent quail habitat: broomsedge, lovegrass, partridge peas, milo, and native grasses.
The tall Georgian plantation pine trees add an interesting challenge for hunters, especially when bobwhite
