THE HORNBLOWER
Barraba Central School Hornblower – 16 June, 2011
PENNINGS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
P&C It was pleasing to see some parents at the
meeting which also had Kerrie Betts (School
Development Officer) in attendance. Mrs
Betts presented ideas in relation to the next
3 year school plan and the next semester.
There are innovative ideas being put into
place in terms of technology, teacher quality
and the school environment to name a few.
As the plans are more fully formed, they will
be published and discussed in more detail.
Athletics Carnival What a wonderful day the carnival was.
There were athletes, parents, house colours,
teachers and even a doctor in attendance!
Congratulations to all concerned, especially
the organisers (Mrs King and Mrs Allman) and
a fuller report can be found later in the
Hornblower.
School Promotion Tracy Frost, Jen Austin, Gabe Wilson and
myself will be travelling to Inverell next
week for the second day of our course. If
there are any ideas that you have in mind to
enhance the school’s promotion, please talk
to one of the members of the team. We will
be presenting our thoughts to you shortly.
Amber Lawrence and Trivia Night Thanks to the organisational and persuasive
skills of Jen Austin, Amber Lawrence
(Country Music Star) will be visiting the
school on the last Thursday of term (30th
June).
Amber will be performing at the secondary
assembly, then running a workshop for
selected music students and having a
discussion with the girls in relation to how
they can achieve great things in their lives,
no matter where they live.
Please come along to the assembly, join us
for lunch and enjoy the experience. The
previous night, the Secondary Library
Committee will be holding a Trivia Night to
raise money for additional library resources
and to have an enjoyable evening.
Please support the school and students in
these exploits. Further details
are available on the flyer in this
issue and also at the secondary
office and displayed throughout
the town. Gary Turner Principal

Reading
with your
Children Spend at least ten wildly happy
minutes every day reading aloud
Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read.
Please read aloud every day, mums and dads, because you just love being with your child, not because it’s the right thing to do.
Let children hear lots of language by talking to them constantly about the pictures, or anything else connected to the book; or sing any old song that you can remember; or say nursery rhymes in a bouncy way; or be noisy together doing clapping games.
Annabelle and Taylah working together ~ the girls asked could they feature in the newsletter, and here they are!
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL REPORT Last Friday, the annual K-12 athletics carnival saw a cool and breezy day present. The teams were all decked out in their blue, red and yellow. Some spectacular costumes were spotted including Emma the Keepit fairy, Chris and Cody the Copeton body hugging singlet wearers and several sensational Splitrockers in gold who were victorious in the end. Well done to all competitors!

The day saw spectacular sportsmanship, cool costumes and super sprinting, throwing and jumping. The fantastic volunteers who made it all happen, the parents and friends who came for the day to support us and the staff, who measured, recorded, judged and cooked, were all appreciated. Enormous thanks to Shinny for having everything look just ‘a little bit schmancy’ on the day. Following is a list of age champions:

Cross Country A very successful Zone Cross Country was held on Friday 27th May at the local golf course. About 30 of our very capable primary students ran over a gruelling 2 or 3 kilometre course. Most of our runners completed the course in the top 30 of their field which was a fantastic result as there were up to 70 runners in each age group. Amazing results were achieved by Josh Austin (4th on the 3 km course) and Rudi Hart (1st in the 2km course). The two boys will represent the school tomorrow, 17th June, in Coolah at the Regional Cross Country. Well done to all the runners and good luck to Josh and Rudi. Jennylyn King

Below is a letter written by Brie Stanger as part of the work on early Australia:
MY LETTER HOME
22nd February 1782
Dear Mum I wish I didn’t steal that loaf of bread. The journey was terrifying. We were on the ship for eight long months. It stunk like the old pig sty. We only got to eat porridge, and that was it for the whole day. We had no privacy. I got seasick a few hundred times. We were treated like pigs. Finally after eight months we hit Australia. I was so glad to put two feet on land and get some fresh air. It smelt so different than England. I saw funny looking people and silly animals. There were no houses, roads, or shops, so we had to build them. It is so hot. All the women convicts made the clothes while the men convicts built all of the houses and roads. I had to make lots of clothes. My hands got pricked with the needles many times. Sometimes my hands were covered in blood. Sometimes when I work very hard, the officer says I might get a pardon and then I could go home. If I do, I want to tell you not to steal because the punishment is horrible. Mum, please don’t worry about me. I might get to come home. I hope I do. Lots of love, Anika. By Brie Stanger
School Magazine 2010 Copies of the school magazine are still available for purchase at the secondary office. If you would like a copy, or if you have forgotten to collect a copy that has been ordered, please see Vickie, Pat or Janene at the office. The magazines are $15 each
to the senior students who have been
studying very hard in the library during
their study periods. Many assignments
completed, only a couple to go………..
