Editors message We are past due for an installment of our Hornblower newsletter and we have lots of information to update our members on. I think it is safe to say the long and unending winter is over, we are all back on our horses, and enjoying the sights and sounds of Spring. We welcome our new Huntsman Mark McManus as he arrived with hounds and horses at the Kennels. He got to work right away and began walking out hounds the day after arriving, and did Hound Exercise the following day! Our short but sweet Spring Hunt season is underway, and our first outings to our Southgate and Kraeling fixtures were enjoyable for all those who turned out. We are optimistically and enthusiastically predicting a great year for the Eglinton and Caledon Hounds. Please take a moment to sit and relax and get caught up on all things ECH. FROM THE BOOKSHELF OF THE GALLOPING LIBRARIAN I am presently reading The Whipper-In by Dennis Foster. I have dipped into this book many times as it has beautiful photographs as well as pertinent information for those who wish to glean a greater understanding of hunting in general, with an emphasis on the role of the whipper-in. A fascinating and informative read, it is also entertaining through the stories of the various exploits of Colonel Foster who, at the time of writing, had ridden with over 290 different packs of hounds in 11 countries. The information covered in the 300 pages ranges from the basics, such as how to dress and hold a whip, to the advanced complexities of weather and scenting conditions. The publication closes with a quote from Theadore Roosevelt which is as follows: "...the man who really counts in this world is the doer, not the mere critic-the man who actually does the work even if roughly and imperfectly, not the man who only talks or writes about how it ought to be done." I shall be so bold as to suggest, by "man", he means all mankind including women. Perhaps even including those who love the foxhound enough to try to help the huntsman on the day, however feebly. A whip is seldom right but strives to improve every time out. Meanwhile, The Whipper-In comes highly recommended. Watch this space for more literary adventures with The Galloping Librarian!
