Letter from the ManagerIn the multitude of ways that we communicate with our cell phones, PDAs and laptops, the Club has now installed wireless local area network (commonly referred to as WiFi) for your use while here at the Club. The network should be up and working by the end of June and we will publish the password as soon as it is made available to us. The Board and House Committee have discussed and approved some parameters around the usage of laptops at our Club. The rules will be:

Computer, Laptop and PDA Usage at the ClubLaptops, i-pads, and all similar devices should not be used (a) in any dining area during posted dining hours or as may be determined by the manager on duty at the Club; or (b) around the pool if your child is under the age of 10 and in the pool area or swimming.

No cameras, videos or still photographs, whether by way of telephones, computers, or otherwise, may be used in the locker rooms or restrooms. Camera usage, whether by way of cell phones, WiFi, or other devices, still or videos, that may constitute an invasion of any other member’s privacy, should be restricted.

There is no better time to join The Briar Club than today. It’s summer, there is no waitlist and all of our amenities are first rate. Thank you to all members who have referred their friends, relations and business associates. Since I have first contacted you regarding this year’s membership initiative, we have taken in more than 30 new members. Our drive towards full membership in the Club allows us to provide the wide ranging family programming The Briar Club has become known for. Thank you for your referrals and your enthusiasm for the Club.

Growing Value in Your Briar Club Experience As we are experiencing these challenging economic times, we are all taking a second look at how we spend our discretionary dollars. Value is a key commodity in all aspects of our discretionary spending. It is interesting to look at and analyze the dollars members spend at our Club. What is totally discretionary to some in one area of the Club is considered very necessary by others. The Briar Club is unique in the way members’ activities are woven into their daily experience. Lap pool swimming, a fitness workout, tennis agility drills or children’s swim lessons all seem so necessary to the many who frequent the Club. Our mission statement dictates that your experiences in all the aforementioned be at the highest level. If this is not the case I hope you will communicate your experiences to me. The Club also works hard at assuring your food and beverage experiences are of high quality and high value also. As we are fine tuning the arrangements for this summer’s pool parties and holiday celebrations, I want to heighten their value to you by allowing them to count towards your food and beverage minimum. We are taking a second look at their pricing and configuration so that most of your dollars will apply towards this necessary minimum. The spending designation for each event will be listed accordingly; watch for the flyers.

Human Resources/Employee Orientation/Professional Association EducationI have published this paragraph before, but would like to spend a few lines communicating to you the significant effort going on behind the scenes that bring our Club the fine employees we have. Management has spent considerable time, effort and resources to elevate and weave our Human Resource Department into the fabric of every area of our Club. Our buildings, tennis courts and pools are what membership walk around in and play on, but a club is made up of people and it is the people who serve membership that are the real “bricks and mortar” of the Club. Over the six years I have been at your service here at The Briar Club, we have developed programs and procedures that make being a member fun and easy. These sound principals are relevant for our employees to be empowered to serve and successful in creating happiness for others. All new employees begin their experience with us in an orientation program where not only do’s and don’ts are discussed, but club culture, service expectations and our mission statement are reviewed and understood. As they continue their employment, continuous education is offered and best practices reviewed. Our management and supervisor level team are coached on coaching and providing support and giving feedback, recognizing and rewarding positive behavior. All of our supervisors are armed with wallet size “Thank you” coupons worth five dollars and are commissioned

The Briar CluB 3

Letter from the PresidentSummer at The Briar Club is fully underway! This is the time of year when children are out of school and utilizing all aspects of our facilities. Our strong swim team called the Briar Barracudas is winding up their season at the end of June. Fitness-wise, we successfully launched the Youth Fit Club (YFC) where the first 12-15 year old to reach black belt status receives the new Apple I-Pad! The kid’s racquets are swinging from 3 years old to over 10 years old and our tennis clinics are well subscribed. We have listened to our member’s needs by staffing the Kid’s Club to accommodate our little ones during the population increase that occurs during a swim meet. We have also listened to the feedback from parents and added healthy items like lettuce wraps, chicken skewers, shrimp salad, and edamame to our snack bar menu. The Summer Blast! Camp will start July 5 and run until

August 13. You can sign your 5-12 year old up weekly for $185 or daily at $40 from 9 am to 1 pm Monday through Friday. Lunch is included……..As you can see, it is a busy and fun place to be for our families!

I wanted to bring your attention to the importance of getting involved in your own club. We have talented members that bring a wealth of backgrounds to our landscape. Have you ever thought about HOW to get more involved with The Briar Club? Why not consider running for a Board of Directors position. Our Nominating Committee is meeting this summer to begin to compile a list of members to be interviewed and placed on the November ballot. Each year three new Directors are voted to serve a 3-year term. You voted to expand the By-Laws in the last ballot to include Past Presidents or Directors on the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee will be looking for members who have experience serving on Briar Club committees so they understand the inner workings of our organization. You can express your interest to a Nominating Committee member, a Committee Chair, any Board member or, of course, our General Manager, Richard Lareau. The 2010 Nominating Committee includes:

to recognize their staff performing their work correctly by giving immediate reward with the $5 coupon which can be redeemed at the HR Office for store coupons at Kroger, Wal-Mart, Target, Starbucks and Whataburger. In pursuit of motivating and empowering employees to achieve even higher service levels we implemented our “Create WOW” program. I must report this incentive has been a great success. Your positive, and sometimes not, feedback has brought our service team and membership closer together with a greater focus on service and happiness. Please know that when members complete “WOW” cards or send me “WOW” emails, these reports are placed up on a “WOW” recognition board in the employee lounge. Furthermore, they receive a “WOW” pin to wear on their uniform and the “WOW” has a paper monetary value so as they accumulate, they can purchase an additional vacation day, enjoy Sunday Brunch with their family at the Club or purchase merchandise from the Briar Shop. Thank you to all the many members who have participated in this initiative.

Again, thank you for your comments and feedback.

At Your Service,

Richard A. Lareau, CCMGeneral Manager/COO

Chef’s CornerMy friends and family equate the beginning of summer to kids getting out of school, vacations and relaxation. I know summer has arrived when my sales of chicken fingers and french fries has escalated. If you told me sixteen years ago that I would lead a team of culinarians to prepare chicken fingers because it is what the clientele demands, I would probably have quit right then and there. It is difficult for a chef to accept that serving chicken fingers does not

dictate your self-worth or abilities. Chefs are very passionate and prideful, but the successful ones humble themselves and realize that they do not dictate what is on the menu, it is the clientele they serve. The irony in all this is that at the end of the day, there is not a single chef who would turn down a perfectly cooked chicken finger with a side of homemade buttermilk ranch. Without the chicken fingers, french fries, and macaroni and cheese, we would not be able to serve and create all the other foods out there. My team and I have embraced the beloved chicken finger and realize it is not just a piece of fried chicken; it is what keeps the Briar Club family alive and buzzing.

Happy Eating,

Chef Lance

The Briar Club is, once again, in the midst of another beautiful summer. As of this writing, the temperatures are still quite mild and far below the intense heat we experienced in 2009. That said, our dining venues, especially the outdoor Grille Patio and the Snack Bar areas are seeing a nice bump in activity.

One of our goals is to provide services for our members as attentively as possible. To this end, we have completed the long awaited training manual and accompanying training system that I last wrote about in this column. In the A’la Carte dining venues we have recently hired several fresh new faces that have been amongst the first to experience the new training system; I believe you will find the

results a fine fit for the club. Please note that we’ve already experienced a couple of applicants whose hearts were not into doing what we feel is necessary to best care for our members; they have since chosen to move on.

You can recognize our newest employees by the “Trainee” name tag they will be wearing. After completing an intense 5 day orientation and training regiment, along with some practical “on-the-floor” time, and then, ultimately passing a broad skills and knowledge test; they will earn their true “name” tag. I’m sure any such employee would enjoy engaging in an icebreaking chat with any member who recognizes their “rookie” status.

As always, we are most interested in your feedback. As a matter of fact, our new training system is a direct result of your comment card submissions. I encourage you to continue filling out the comment card that accompanies your dining check. I review these daily so as to keep abreast of member observations and experiences as well as to address any specific member issue. Additionally, I pass the cards along to the Chef and subsequently to the General Manager; we then tend to any “areas of opportunity” with follow-up action and communication back to the author. Then the cards are presented to the Food & Beverage Committee for their enlightenment and finally to the Board of Directors so we all know what the membership is experiencing at the club. We pay particular attention to recurring trends.

I look forward to seeing you this summer as you enjoy your beautiful club.
