Foreword

Figure 0.0.1: Michael Blömeke

The idea for this book came while workingand tinkering with BaseCamp. To makeplanning easier and solve some problemsI went on a search for a manual. Unfor-tunately, I did not nd what I was hopingfor. The few that I found were too super-cial and did not deal with the questionsI had.

Since I am in contact with a lot of GPSusers and oer courses for GPS naviga-tion myself since 2005, it suggested itselfto write my own manual. I decided for aneBook, because it provides some advan-tages that a hardcover cannot oer. The full version of this book has an interactivetable of contents, which makes it easy to jump to any chapter and back as on a website. Some term are directly linked to a description or further readings. Internet addressesare also directly accessible by a click. Another advantage is that I can quickly and easilyintegrate any changes. The distribution to purchasers of the eBook does not pose anyproblems either. Since the described devices and software's change constantly throughupdates or new models, this enables me to keep the information up to date.

Thank you for purchasing my eBook.

I hope you have a lot of fun and success with your trip planning.

About the Author

Michael Blömeke has been active outdoors since hischildhood. Growing up on the outskirts of a village inthe middle of the hill country of Kraichgau nature wasnever far away. The desire to travel and to orient him-self and navigate ourished with an increasing activityradius.

With his four wheel truck he went through south-ern European back country, over exposed alpine roadsfrom the world wars to the Atlas Mountains in Mo-rocco.

Canoe trips on lakes, rivers and salt water and hikingon foot even in the winter with snowshoes, broughtmore adventures and experiences.

Meanwhile, the long-time dream of owning a sailingboat came true, which posed new navigational chal-lenges.

In 1987 his hobby became a profession when he openedthe Adventurer Shop, a store for traveling gear. Out-door shops came into fashion much later only. Ofthe original plan of "I'm now going to do this for thenext ten years" became twenty one. In addition tothe gear and equipment a range of outdoor, traveland training oers developed . O-road tours, canoetrainings, navigation training, winter hikes and canoetours added a new business area.

2008 was a year of change. The Adventurer Shop wasclosed, the tours and training courses were increas-ingly oered. The signs of the times pointed to theinternet. As time continued outdoor items where soldvia various web stores.

To expand his web presence and to develop new ideasan education to become a webmaster and internetmarketing specialist was pursued.

Today he lives with his wife and three children inKraichgau, near Karlsruhe.

THE BASECAMP WINDOW 17

BaseCamp is a free software by Garmin for route planning and data management inGPS receivers. BaseCamp is compatible with all USB capable devices, but specicallyto communicate with the new generation of devices that are recognized in Windows asa drive. Connection with older GPS via the serial interface is not supported. Base Campis available for free for PC and Mac at [http://www.garmin.com/basecamp]

The BaseCamp Window

On the main window in BaseCamp you can nd on the top area the Menu List andon the left side the Library under My Collection. Under the Lists you can nd theitem Garmin Adventure, there you can manage the GPS-Data with Pictures, Videosand Text included as a compilation. Underneath you can nd "Devices" when a GPSreceiver or a memory card is connected.

Underneath the library is a window in which the elements of each active collection, list,or device are displayed. To sort the lists clearly, you can organize them into folderslist. Unlike Mapsource or any Data Base Software BaseCamp is set up as a database oflibraries. This means for the user that a geo-le (Waypoint, Track, Route, etc.) existsonce, but may appear in multiple lists. If, for example, a WP is changed in a list, thechanges are also seen in the other lists. Also, any change is immediately saved in thedatabase. You do not have to save the le when you are done. For a better overview, you can le the individual lists into folders lists.

Page 18: BaseCamp Manual · 2018-09-13 · BaseCamp is a free software by Garmin for route planning and data management in GPS receivers. BaseCamp is compatible with all USB capable devices,

18

List Folders and Lists

are not comparable with folders in the Explorer on a PC or Finder on Mac. One Itemcan appear in many Lists or List Folders. Strictly speaking, is it here to show the lteredpart corresponding to an Item in My Collection and hide the rest. All the Items are tobe found in my Collection, only the matched up item will be shown by setting a lterover it.

Toolbars

The toolbar on your computer diers probably from my view. How to change them canbe found in the chapter Toolbar Settings.

Top left there is a selection box for activity proles , in whichthe routing setting can be changed quickly.

is the tool-selection box to edit WP, routes, tracks and Birds Eye images.

There are also icons to switch the map view .

Map Transmission

There is no icon to transfer maps into the GPS receiver. For that BaseCamp calls upthe external software MapInstall.

Data Management

In BaseCamp you can directly view and edit the data stored on the connected GPSreceiver or memory card. Even maps that are on the GPS, and even SD cards, can bedisplayed and used for route planning.

The distinguishing feature (unique point) is the 100% identical name and type of theitem. There can indeed be a WP and a track with the same name but not two WP ortracks with the same name. This is true for all Garmin GPS and software.

For example if a Waypoint like Parking Lot is on the GPS, it overwrites the existingone with the same WP name when you transmit it into BaseCamp.

If you import a le (.gdb, .gpx, etc.) in BaseCamp, that contains an already existingWP, it is not duplicated but replaced with the new identically named WP. The same istrue for other elements.

Page 19: BaseCamp Manual · 2018-09-13 · BaseCamp is a free software by Garmin for route planning and data management in GPS receivers. BaseCamp is compatible with all USB capable devices,

THE BASECAMP WINDOW 19

Trip planning

Similar to Mapsource you can create Waypoints, Routes and Tracks. New is the abilityto convert a track to a route and vice versa. Route or track merging is also possible.

Other new functions are data backup of the entire database, geotagged photos, viewingand managing BirdsEye images and CustomMaps. You can search for Maps display, vector or Bitmap maps and places, POI's and Tour (Garmin Adventure).

GPS Updates

When connecting a GPS receiver Basecamp automatically detects the internal software,if the PC is connected to the internet, it checks the Garmin server whether a new devicesoftware is available. If this is the case, it right away opens the Web Updater dialogwindow and leads through the steps to equip the GPS with the new software. Afterthat, it checks every 14 days for available updated software.

CustomMaps

With BaseCamp, owners of older GPS receivers that cannot display CustomMaps haveanother option to plan routes. For that choose >File< - >Import< and then a Cus-tomMap and import it. With Basecamp you cannot, however, create CustomMaps.

BaseCamp Versions

The version numbers refer to the changes made by the programmer. The rst digitindicates the version, currently the fourth. The next digit stands for the minor version,so when smaller changes to the features of the software have to be made. Changes thatalter this number are available for new or modied functions. The last digit refers tothe bug x, the state of error processing. When this changes, only errors have beencorrected but not functions.

Garmin Adventure

An adventure consist of a small green backpack that indicates a track. Waypoints,Notes, Geo-caches, Photos and Videos may be added. So hereby BaseCamp gives thepossibility of a hike to an interactive guide to share or publish. The publication goesthrough a separate server from Garmin, which can also serve as a backup for the tours.

The adventure can be divided into dierent types, you have the option to view thedescriptions like possibility, diculty, popularity and data like distance and duration.

Page 20: BaseCamp Manual · 2018-09-13 · BaseCamp is a free software by Garmin for route planning and data management in GPS receivers. BaseCamp is compatible with all USB capable devices,

20

Likewise everybody can put together their Garmin Adventure in BaseCamp and publishit on the Internet.

Cloud Storage

The Cloud Storage is used for the exchange of data between multiple installations of aGarmin Basecamp user. To activate it you must Log in with your myGarmin credentials. In Cloud Storage can all the elements be stored, with the exception of Bird's-Eye images.

Conclusion

BaseCamp oers a very wide range of functions. For route planning BaseCamp is cur-rently one of the best programs, only the variety functions slays the beginner. For eachroute, you can choose the route options, elements of the GPS receiver can be changed di-rectly in BaseCamp (only generation USB 2.0), map products from the SD card, custommaps and Birds Eye pictures can be displayed.

Elements in BaseCamp or inthe GPS receiver

Waypoints and POI

A Waypoint obtain unique information about a specic place certainly through coordi-nates. In principle, similar to a contact on a mobile phone. Apart from the name theicon and many other data can be added or changed (also on the GPS). In Basecampadditional link les can be saved to photos or sites.

Figure 0.0.4: On the left side of the screenshot there is a POI, this data can't be changed,on the right side there is a Waypoint from this POI, here you can edit the data.

A POI contains information from the initial product, in a map as TopoD or City Navi-gator are specied. Also from the POI databases can other POIs be derived, they canalso be created. In the Bonus lesson creating your own POI is described. In contrastto Waypoints, POIs can't be changed. There is the possibility to save the POI as aWaypoint, then you can edit it and include your own information.

Routes & Tracks

are a chain of points to describe a trail.

Routes

can contain Waypoints, POIs and other map features like cities, also crossroads andturning points. The GPS shows each turn point and can show time and distance to thenext Waypoint.

23

Figure 0.0.5: Beginning of the Route Window and ending of the Waypoint, in betweenturning points.

Tracks

consist only of track legs, from a track point (coordinates) and are set to the distance tothe next point. It contains data on the section between the track points, the directionand position of the track points. In recorded tracks are available altitude data, be itfrom the recording altimeter on the GPS or by the planning of the Topographic Map onthe PC, which are also present in the track.

A track is originally to record a distance traveled and also data such as speed, drivingtime and time in when a track point was recorded. Track points can not be edited andalso Waypoints can not be inserted.

After the USB 1 devices, it was a step backwards in the track navigation; USB 2 GPSshow no messages for turning and disappears when reaching the end without commentsabout the track or destination.

Exercise: Start right away and create a list that you name Exercise or somethinglike that. In this list you can create waypoints, routes, tracks... to try out the work stepswhile reading the book. Later you may just delete this list with all its content.

Menu Functions

The menu is divided into the usual Windows main commands File, Edit, View, Tools,Utilities and Help.

File

Figure 0.0.7: Menu - Item

New opens a dialog to add a list, folder or elements.

Import opens the explorer to import a le. Most common formats for navigationdata bases and pictures are supported.

With Export you can write data into a le. The formats .gdb, .gpx, txt, csv andtcx are supported for this. This is also a good option to outsource the unwanteddata.

 Backup writes a backup le.

With Restore you can return to the last backup. Changes made in between arelost.

Restore from previous version opens the last records created before a BaseCampupdate to a later version (Tip: save data beforehand)

Page 26: BaseCamp Manual · 2018-09-13 · BaseCamp is a free software by Garmin for route planning and data management in GPS receivers. BaseCamp is compatible with all USB capable devices,

26

I export lists that I rarely use, in .gpx Data and then delete it and its contents frommy collection. This way I have a better overview.

This is a great way to create partial backups of the data. The complete backupis excellent, but when I have destroyed a list a long time ago, it overwrites all restored(newer) data.

Print opens the dialog to print a map. More about this subject under Print.

 Exit ends the session.

I recommend you to create backups frequently, especially after long sessions withBaseCamp, which you keep physically separated. In addition, it is advisable to exportfolder lists or individual lists after editing and to save them separately. Moreover, it isadvisable to export list folders or individual lists after editing them as .gpx and so tosecure them separately.

There is a new function called the Trip Planner. So you can pre-plan meticulously yourtrip, by entering the days and the maximum travel duration per day. I have been testedit, but I nd the Trip Planner too inexible. My rst drive was 8 hours and 5 minutes. At the default settings were given only eight hours. Therefore BaseCamp planned myarrival to the campsite only until. On the second day it read the missing driving milesto the overnight stay.

Later, I couldn't change the default anymore, there you have to plan a new trip. I thinkthis tool will be further developed or discarded.

Working with BaseCamp

Basic Settings of BaseCamp

By whole and large, you can leave the default settings. You should only look at Mea-surement, Display (if one has diculty to see the writing) or the settings for routing(Activity Proles) to see if the settings suit you. From time to time these need to bechanged when planning a route.

Toolbars

I suggest you rst to set up the toolbar as follows:

So are the important order commands here in my Toolbar shown: Selection of Map

products ,

Map Detail-degree ,

Activity proles ,

Map functions ,

Editing ,

Drawing functions

and maps quickly accessible.

To set this go to view and then Toolbars. There you should click each one to hook itonto the most important commands. So in order as they appear in the menu: Activityproles, level of detail, drawing functions, editing, map products, map function, View.

Then you can move your mouse over the three points, where the cursor changes to a

four-way arrow is: To be able to move each segment of the toolbar.

Of course you can set View otherwise, this is your decision.

If you lost the selection tool , activate it under Toolbars / Show Select Tool..

Figure 0.0.20: Options Measurement

Measurements

The rst sub-item is "Measurement System" and here we set the units, the indicatedheading and position format within the software. This does not have to coincide withthe GPS receiver set. In the GPS receiver it must be set separately.

The measurement sets "English", "Metric," "Nautical" and "Custom" can be selected. For example, if you want metric values but greater distances in nautical miles and knots, choose "Metric", then "Custom" and change "Distance & Speed" to "Nautical (nm,kn, m)".

The temperature specication is only useful if the connected GPS receiver has a sensoror a sensor is connected.

Under Grade you can adjust the unit of the slope.

The Heading "True" displays the true course with corrected magnetic variation. "Au-tomatic Magnetic Variation" displays the course as magnetic compass heading. "Gridshows the course with a decimal. In "User Magnetic Variation you can enter a deviatingvalue, which will be taken into account. "Cardinal Point" shows the direction with theletters N, E, SW ...

Internally, the software and the GPS calculate in the ECEF coordinate system. Fordisplay the coordinates are converted to the appropriate format.

Display

The menu item Display is used to adjust the display of the map. Here you can playaround a bit. Or simply leave the default settings. All features that need to be displayedare enabled.

With "Reset" it can be undone again.

Routing Tab Here the options for route calculation are determined, there are someopportunities for improvement, which ought to avoid frustration by adjusting before.

Here again is the potential to try. You can specify how for each prole BaseCampcalculates the routes. What streets preference should be given, what to avoid whenrouting and adjusting the average speeds.

Figure 0.0.22: Routing

For the avoidance is important to remove the tick at "U-turns". Possible in allproles in which it is set. When the box is checked all the hairpin bends are avoided onmountain routes. So just motorcyclists or other curves-loving individuals like me :-) areotherwise despair.

40 WORKING WITH BASECAMP

This is also ideal for the settings in the GPS receiver, which determines again theitinerary separately. Put here for the proles used your xed preferences. It is best to dothe same here, otherwise you are planning a mountain hike and are stuck wondering whyyour GPS wants to go around the scheduled cable railway. There are many examples, sotake your time, or later trouble is pre-programmed in the truest sense of the word. Asvisible in the image many pre-settings are not exactly optimal.

Moreover, you are going in the GPS routing settings and choose the activity from here.Avoidances also be set in each case for the activity. In the chosen activity you are goingto go to "avoidances set up" and take each o the hook, at options, for that what youdo not want to drive around.

Library and My Collection

Figure 0.0.27: Library

Here we nd all the elements arranged in lists. Under the term"Library" we nd a folder called "My Collection" under whichwe can nd the "items" organized into lists and folders.

Elements is the generic term for waypoints, routes, tracks,BirdsEye images, custom maps, Geocaches and Geo-referencedphotos. "My Collection" is activated (is gray highlighted byclicking it once) all items in the list will be displayed on themap.

Clicking on a list, only the contained elements are shown. Thereis also the possibility to lter data, for example to show onlywaypoints, routes or tracks from the list. For this click on thevery bottom of the blue funnel to see the lter.

Among them are the "Lists", organized in folders to be found. This can be edited, provided with an individual name, importnew lists or export a list.

Lists or folders lead to a better overall view available via thecontained items in the collection, are therefore, each a lteredview of it.

To store items in a folder, a list must be created rst, for theitems to be stored in a list.

UNLISTED DATA 45

Unlisted Data

Under Unlisted Data all the data that doesn't belong to a Listare showed. A Garmin Adventure, however, contain a record of

at least a Track. Additional it may contain Waypoints, Pictures and a link to a video.

Under Device are the GPS-receivers and memory cards to nd, which it could containitems and maps. Below is the list of items, here will be the content of each of the lists, list folders, Garmin Adventure or device displayed.

Here in my sidebar can the cloud storage also be seen, needs to be activated rst. Morein the cloud storage chapter.

Below, in the second half of the sidebar, is the list of data, here is in each case thecontents of the lists, Folders list, Garmin Adventure or Devices.

The dividing line of the sidebar can with the mouse be pulled up or be pulled down.

In the screen above is the list folder marked Training and the items are accordinglyshown below. In the Search eld you can enter the name of an item to view it. If youclick on the bottom row on an icon the corresponding elements are displayed, the restare hidden.

46 DATA MANAGEMENT, LIBRARY AND MY COLLECTION

The general term for Waypoints, Routes, Tracks, BirdsEye, Custom Maps and Geo-reference photos is an item. The feature which makes it unique is the name of an item. There can be a Waypoint, Route or Track with the same name, but there can't be twoitems of the same kind with the same name. If you create an item, and give it an existingname, a note will show with the warning: Choose a unique name (Illustration b).

References

For example a Waypoint is stored in My Collection. It has the name Home. Thenyou create a list and plan your trip in it. Now you want to insert the Waypoint Homein to that list and drag it in with the mouse. So it will also appear in this list. But it didnot get copied, it becomes a reference in the waypoint added, that it will also appear inthe new list.

Figure 0.0.29: reference

But it is always one and the same Waypoint. This applies to all items.

This is also the reason why there are two ways of deleting an item. You can deletean item or remove it from the highlighted list. With Delete: the item will be deletedcompletely. With remove from >current list< only the reference from the list will beremoved.

By right-clicking on a list or "My Collection" you can edit it. "Send To" to copys theitem from one list to another, or on a connected GPS receiver.

"Move to ..." removes the selected items from this location and shifts it to a newspecied location.

With "cut", "copy" and "paste" you can put the marked content via the clipboard toanother software (for example, Mapsource) or List or folder by copying or transfer.

With "Duplicate" You can clone selected elements. This is particularly useful for routevariants. "Duplicate List" produces a list with the same content. The content is notcopied, it is only one time in the collection.

A duplicated element or list gets the same name as the original with a attached numberin parentheses.

Double-clicking on a list of zooms the map to show its content.

"Remove your own content and Delete" removes the corresponding data completely.Remove removes only the list or folder, the items remain in the collection (it is possibleto reverse).

"Rename" is for the name change of an element.

"Create Garmin Adventure ..." inserts the marked items into a new adventure.

"BirdsEye images from selection .." Opens the BirdsEye dialog and marks a rect-angle, involving all the selected data.

Try all this with items that you will only create for exercise. So create a list called"Exercise", making Waypoints, tracks and routes, play around and keep trying. Uploadit to the GPS and go for a stroll ;-) ....

Garmin Adventures

An adventure displayed by a small green backpack that indicates a track. Waypoints,Notes, Geocaches, Photos and Videos can be added. So hereby BaseCamp gives thepossibility of a hike to an interactive guide to share or publish. The publication goesthrough a separate server from Garmin, which can also serve as a backup for the tours.

Garmin Adventure in the GPS Device

Older devices can't show photos. In there memory only Tracks, Waypoints and Noteswill be loaded. Even you will have to shorten names and notes, so they appear usefulin the GPS. In addition, Tracks are shortened, so they need to be compressed accordingto your GPS. The new GPS-receiver should be able to reproduce the adventure withoutproblems. However, the device software needs to be up to date. This function wasadded in the fall of 2012. Make sure to have the latest Firmware in your GPS. Then theTracks, Waypoints and Photos will be displayed on the GPS, as well as Notes that aresaved as a Waypoint.

Later the ratings lead to the Garmin Adventure portal, the well rated tours are listedhigher.

Devices

At the lower part of the library BaseCamp shows the connected devices. Data cards andGPS receivers are listed as separate devices.

To avoid mix-ups you should remove all unused data cards from your PC.

A right click on the GPS receiver opens a slightly dierent menu.

Figure 0.0.34: Internal Device Storage

Here you also have the option to copy data etc. as explained under Library. Furthermoreyou can Install Maps on the GPS or check directly for Device Software Updates. In therst case MapInstall opens with the pre-set receiver. In the second case Web Updateropens. "Send To" enables you to copy data from the GPS to a list.

With "Export" you can save data from the GPS directly. After a tour I create abackup this way with the date as le name simply in order to save all WP and tracksbefore a tour evaluation.

"Create Garmin Adventure ..." Opens a list of tracks on the GPS and oers to createan adventure.

"Eject" closes the data and prepares the device to be disconnected from the computer.

Clicking on a map opens a window with the product information.

Inserted data cards are displayed under the GPS.

The menu for data cards inserted directly to the PC is almost identical.

Saving Data onto the GPS receiver

For this simply drag a list or data set and drop it in the folder >connected GPS< / AllData. The content is copied to the memory of the GPS. You can also right click ontoa list or element, select "Send To " and select the destination. In the same way youcan save data onto a memory card.

You should be careful however, with prerecorded original Garmin data cards. Delet-ing the wrong le on here can make the map product useless. Micro SD cards have nooverwrite protection.

But there is the option to create a backup of the map set beforehand to be able torevive the micro SD card. This map product however, can only be used on this specicmemory card. It is unlocked for the serial number of the memory card.

The GPS receiver can pull element from the internal memory or a data card.

The new versions of MapInstall recognize the prerecorded data cards and show a warning.

Editing Data on the GPS Receiver

Selecting the GPS in your library displays the therein contained elements in the data listand on the map.

This means you can edit, delete, etc. as usual.

But there are no data lists on GPS receivers. Some receivers show categories in whichthe elements are sorted according to the lists.

To disconnect the device from the PC you should prepare it with the "Eject" command, otherwise data errors can occur. GPS receiver of the USB1 generation do not have tobe ejected.

Managing GPS Receivers of the USB 1.0 Generation

When connecting a GPS receiver of the 1.0 generation the screen doesn't look muchdierent than usual. However, right clicking onto the folder "All Data" opens a sub-menu with a lot fewer options than with newer GPS models.

Then take the GPS and delete the data with >Menu< and >Reset<.

Now you can save the changed data from BaseCamp onto the GPS Receiver. Althoughyou can load BirdsEye images and CustomMaps into the memory of USB-1-GPS, itcannot display them. There is also an error message when trying to transfer photos, because they are not supported.

So, for example, if you plan your trips on the home PC, you copy the items in the cloudstorage.

After the synchronization, you can access it on the laptop.

To activate it, just log in BaseCamp with your myGarmin access data. To do this youclick on menu and then "Registration". It is open the window to enter the credentials.

Map View and Toolbar

BaseCamp oers the option to view a map in 2D or 3D. Or both next to each other. When planning routes I usually work in the two-dimensional view. But sometimes it isquite interesting to see the map in 3D. On Windows XP 3D view is not available.

the map window it turns into an arrow that allows you to move the map; the arrow keyson your keyboard will do the same.

Even with the controls you can have another view, I nd it rather awkward. The fourarrows move the map, a rotation on the compass rose rotates the map. With the slideryou can zoom. Click + or - makes a step, moving the arrow is good for larger size jumps.

To rearrange the map when it is turned simply double click on "N". You can also arrangeit towards the three other direction in the same way.

To switch between the data and map windows click onto the small arrows on thedividing line. It is even simpler with the keyboard shortcut >Ctrl+Tab<.

can be used to go to a dierent position of the activated element. If the arrow isactivated play back will be repeated.

In this toolbar you can see detailed information of the track or route.

BUTTONS GPS 61

Buttons GPS

Sending to the GPS device or receiving from the GPS:

A click on the left button sends the active items to the connected GPS. A click on theright button opens a window to choose the device and then transmits all the items intoa new list folder named "Data from the GPS Device ..." in a list with dates as name list.

Because this approach in the long term leads to confusion, I do not recommend it.

Selecting a Mouse Pointer

Moving on to the important tools:

The hand is used to move the map. Left click moves and right click turns the map.

The magnier is for zooming. Left click enlarges and right click reduces the view. Ifyou draw a rectangle to the map area, it will maximize on the screen.

My main interest is for the pointer. With it you can click on a waypoint etc. and abox with its name and a double arrow pops up. Clicking on the name or arrow opens thedetail window and you can view and edit the properties. Same goes for Routes, Tracks,Geocaches, BirdsEye and CustomMaps.
