Since 1865, Reuge manufactures traditional music boxes, singing bird automatons and musical pocket

watches by hand in the Swiss mountains – with carefully composed mechanical music movements.

This incredible and unique Manufacture not only proposes catalogue pieces but it’s artisans also

customize and create bespoke pieces of Art.

It takes about 3 months to produce a REUGE piece of Art, and our craftsmen breathe life and soul into their creations at every step of their creative process. Many professional secrets, including highly

specialised skills in the fabrication of music boxes, singing birds and pocket watches, must be mastered in order to create one of these

fine creations. This unrivalled expertise is one of the unique secrets behind mechanical music.

The main manufacturing stages for the cylinder include drilling, pinning, lining and controlling; stamping, splitting, hardening,

soldering, tuning and damping are those of the comb. Many other stages, such as arranging, assembling, fixing and encasing are

required to produce the REUGE musical movements. Benefiting from the priceless legacy of music makers, REUGE musical movements

are to this day manufactured according to an art dating back centuries. An infinite wealth of tunes, absolute machining precision

and exceptional finely-finished parts are the hallmarks of REUGE musical movements.

Musical movements are elevated to the rank of “works of art” at the latest once they are set in their sumptuous cases, true resonance

boxes. With their centuries of experience, box-makers select the finest quality wood based on scent, timbre and vibration. The woods are meticulously inspected for flaws and blemishes during the selection process. Knowledge passed on over generations is

paramount in ensuring a quality sound in the boxes.

The centuries-old art of inlay requires noble skills that REUGE inlayers practise with both passion and rigour. This highly

sophisticated and refined art form reproduces original musical themes, superbly replicated in these boxes that combine in subtle

This year Reuge choose the great composer Igor Stravinsky and his opera “The Firebird”. Igor Stravinsky (1882 – 1971) was a very well-known and particularly appreciated composer of Russian origin. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Stravinsky’s work spans nearly seventy years and is characterized by its great stylistic diversity. His opera “The Firebird” was written in 1909/10 based on a Russian tale. The melodies recall the most symbolic moments of the opera, the lullaby and the finale. The complexity is presented by preserving the wealth and depth of an opera composed of many instruments with a single musical movement. The box specially designed for this melody has been made in maple wood integrating by hand over 400 different pieces of woods. The inlay on the lid represents the dance of the princess and the firebird. The inside of the lid shows the princess turned into a bird. To complete this outstanding beauty of a box the master craftsmen in wood-inlay have added feathers on the sides of the box. The exquisite 144 note Reuge movement makes this model a much sought-after piece of the Art of Mechanical music. The history of Reuge has always been closely linked to classical music. Many composers have already been featured by Reuge, their creation being a natural fit for the transposition to the Art of mechanical music.

Palermo144 520

Palermo is an exceptional piece of furniture, in both the musical and decorative sense of the term. It exudes a dream-like quality in its gentle elegance. The box seems to come alive with rich wood colours, from reddish-brown to pinkish-yellow. It is crafted from burr amboyna, a rare, precious Asian wood used exclusively for luxurious decorative objects. Palermo is the perfect example of the meticulous work carried out by our master-cabinetmakers and inlayers. The inlay is composed of more than 450 pieces of wood, hand-placed one by one into the wood veneer. Palermo offers a whole concert of 20 tunes, taken from the most important artistic periods from the Renaissance to today. Like a philarmonic orchestra, Palermo has a 144 note movement, six bells and a drum. The movement is luxuriously finished with meticulous details, with a base-plate decorativd with Côtes de Genève engraving and a chamfered polished finish.
