Andy equals Anthony’s record
BY taking the field in
last week’s game
against Speeders,
Mavs II pitcher Andy
Gardner (pictured)
equalled the record for
consecutive
games played,
set by An-
thony Garcia
Reyes, then
playing for
Mayhem, from
his first game
on 19th April
2011 until in-
jury forced him out of
the game scheduled for
20th May 2015.
Andy likewise has not
missed a game since
his debut, for Mayhem
II, on 23rd April
2013, switching
to Mavericks II
from the start of
the 2015 sea-
son. In fact
Andy was also
an ever-present
as a guest for
Storm last sea-
son: if those games
“counted”, he would
have passed Anthony a
while ago.
So, if selected this
week, Andy will be out
in front, on 76 — and
good luck anyone aim-
ing to catch him!

AFTER the previous week’s
loss, Rebels bounced back
with a win against the newly
formed Meteors. Although
the first inning was close (2-
1) Rebels calmed down and
stopped swinging at the first
pitch, meaning they then
steadily scored to end the
game 20-3 after five innings.
Only one player batted 1.000
(Dave Eaton once more) with
the best of the girls being
Hayley McTear and Emma
Miller batting .750.
Three players had home
runs: Conor Battersby,

return after missing five
games with injury.

VIPERS took to the field on
what seemed like a regular
Tuesday night, ready to
unleash the their might on the
Barflies. We got off to a normal
start: they scored a few, we
scored a few, just an average
softball game, nothing too spe-
cial.
That was until the spell-casting
Gypsy Rose-Lee arrived in all
regalia, meandering in on her
three-legged donkey, trying
desperately to blend in with the
surroundings but I saw
her, with her leatheresque
face looking like she had
spent the last 14 hours on a
re-tubed sunbed. I so wish
I had bought those pegs
back in 1979, then none of
this would have happened!
She dropped her curse onto
anyone wearing the light
blue of the Vipers: “The
curse of the inability to bat,
run, catch or throw”, the
most important things
needed whilst playing this
glorious game.
The Barflies then chalked
up run after run after run.
Even Rippers’ own Laura
Bintcliffe managed to score
her first ever homerun,
guesting for the Barflies of
course. Rose-Lee looked on,
cackling like a banshee at
the Vipers’ inability to get
the Barflies out. She did
stop for a quick swig of
rum, stolen from her es-
tranged great-great grand-
son Leo Pearn at the Alex
Hall Memorial Tourney
earlier in the month. She
didn’t seem to notice a pop-
up that went to 3rd and
which was caught by our
newest recruit Amy Miller.
Barflies went on to score 19
runs in a single inning be-
fore we eventually got all
three outs. We then got up
to bat and lo and behold we
forgot how to run. Rose-Lee
worked her evil sorcery
again, tripping and injur-
ing our players: knees, an-
kles, she blatantly didn’t
care so long as we were un-
able to score. Back to the
Page 3 Volume 23 Issue 9
field and we seemed to have
the better of the curse. That
was until her deviant hoodoo
tripped our catcher, Gemma
Wallace, whilst making the
tag of all tags.
After four innings, two inju-
ries, not many runs for us and
a bucket load for Barflies,
Rose-Lee decided to call it a
night. I just pray she doesn’t
return for us or any other
team. If you do get offered
pegs at an extortionate rate,
please buy them, you’ll be
helping softball in general.
The above report was based
totally on fact, not a single
part was fabricated at all, hon-
est! Dave Warren

RIPPERS have not had the
best start to the season but as
a self-confessed geek, I de-
cided to take a look at some
of the stats we keep and no-
ticed that a lot of the runs
scored against us were by
guests, especially the home
runs and the grand slams –
in some cases, this has really
put the opposition at an ad-
vantage and won them the
game. I checked for our sis-
ter team (the Vipers) and no-
ticed there was a pattern in
Division 4 too with players
guesting “down” smashing
home runs and grand slams
against them every single
week.
There’s lots of talk about
guesting and rostering rules
so I am not going to keep re-
peating it here, it’s getting
pretty old now and which-
ever side of the fence you sit
on, you know that there have
been disagreements about
the guesting rules for as long
as I have played the sport
and far before that.
There is another rule we de-
cided to bring into play this
week – it’s an ISF rule that
states:
Rule 8 Sect. 1: If the de-
fensive team desires to
walk a batter intention-
ally either the pitcher,
catcher or coach may do
so by notifying the plate
umpire.
When our pitcher got down
the order, we noticed that
there was a player on the op-
position from Division 2 who
also plays at NSL level and
we pitched to him. He
smashed it for a home run
but as there was no one on
base, we got away with con-
ceding only the one run.
We like this player, we have
played with him at tourna-
ments and he is a talented
hitter but in fairness he’s not
a Division 3 player. There-
fore we decided to remove
the advantage he would give
the Outlaws by removing his
opportunity to bat. In doing
so, we caused visible frustra-
tion and a sense of unhappi-
ness within the Outlaws
camp as they were claiming
this was unfair and we
should have let him play.
But it worked.
By walking the NSL player,
we minimised the advantage
and kept the game tight. Al-
though he wasn’t happy, it
did create a fairer game and
I explained this decision to
the Outlaws after the game
and to the player in ques-
tion; this wasn’t a personal
protest against anyone, this
was a way of regaining the
equilibrium of a fair match
by removing the advantage a
higher-level player gives a
team. It’s a legal ploy in
MSL, as is the guesting
down. Therefore I don’t
think it should be frowned
on, nor should teams be dis-
couraged from using it as it
is unsporting. I encourage
more teams, especially in Di-
vision 4 who are facing

those who don’t know) but
added a walk and a grand
slam to complete his six plate
appearances. Mike didn’t
want to be photographed, so
here’s a picture of a cycle in-
stead.
IN Division 2 a record-
equalling appearance by
Mavs II pitcher Andy Gard-
ner (see front page story) was
not celebrated by a win—
quite the opposite as Speed-
ers got the mercy win that
puts them in the top four for
now. Mayhem overcame an
early setback to beat Camels
II convincingly, while a com-
fortable win for the Camels
over the Sharks, coupled
with the Mutineers’ rest-
week left the standings in to-
tal disarray thanks to the

their first win this season.
IN Division 4, Hurricanes
refound their form with a de-
cent win against Phoenix,
who had previously only lost
once, to the league-leading and
unbeaten Hackers. They in
turn continued their march
with a mercy-rule defeat of the
Colts. There were big wins
also for Barflies, Rebels and
Titans, the first two slaugh-
tering the two bottom teams,
while the Titans extended
their 14-7 lead over the Blue
Jays with a 12-run 7th inning.
Freeze had a closer game
with the one-short Enforcers,
who again threatened to forfeit
before three new recruits were
found at the eleventh hour.

before the Division 4-5 split,

F OLLOWING articles
on the guest rules by
Dave Warren and
Jerry Seabridge, and a sur-
vey of guest rules around
the country, this week we
ran an informal survey on
the website, seven deliber-
ately provocative questions,
just to gauge opinion
league-wide.
We offered seven statements
reflecting commonly heard
views on the guest rules,
and asked respondents if
they strongly or slightly
agreed or disagreed, with a
neutral “don’t know” (or nei-
ther agree nor disagree)
choice in the middle.
The survey was “live” for
about ten days, and we got
148 replies which, assuming
they were all from different
individuals, represents 29%
of active MSL players (i.e.
rostered players who have
actually played).
The main reason for guests
is to prevent teams from
forfeiting, finding extra
players in an emergency
Our first question met with
wide-ranging agreement:
90.6% of respondents agree
that the main purpose for the
guest rules is when you are
short (see graphic below).
The rules are good because
they allow keen players to
play two or three times a
week
Our first question elicited
much agreement, but on this
one responses were more
evenly spread: 48.7% agree
(of which 20.3% com-
pletely), while 40.5%
disagree (22.3%
completely) and
10.8% don’t
know. So far
this season, 86
players have
appeared as
guests, of
which 13 have
appeared
“regularly” (five or
more times). Perhaps
this is not a “problem” we
Guest rules—online survey need to legislate for.
Guest rules allow teams with
not enough players to exist
and boost the number of
teams in the league
This question was not as
strongly worded as it might
have been. The responses,
which were again fairly
evenly split, do not indicate
whether you think this is a
good or bad thing.
There should be a limit on
top quality players playing
in the lower division
This was the question that
elicited the most overwhelm-
ing agreement, with 90%
agreeing with the statement,
and just two respondents com-
pletely disagreeing—see
graphic opposite. Who quali-
fies as “top quality” and what
those limits should be will of
course be a matter of debate
in the coming months. In the
first eight weeks of this sea-
son, 116 (59%) of the total of
196 guests have been playing
“down”. 34% of guests are
playing “up”, and just 7% are
playing for same-division ri-
vals. Of course not all these
guests playing down are “top

quality”—in fact the number
of Division 1 rostered players
guesting in Division 4 so far is
35, which is 30% of all guests
playing down. That’s 35 guest
appearances, which have been
made by nine individuals.
There should be a limit on
how many guests a team
can use over the season
A majority of respondents
(56.8%) agree with this state-
ment while the other 43.3%
were split evenly between not
knowing, slightly and com-
pletely disagreeing. Perhaps
the spread of responses re-
flects an inherent vagueness
in the question which did not
stipulate what sort of limit
there might be.
In the season so far, only
one team has not used a
single guest. Ten teams
have used seven or more
guests, that is, on average a
guest every game.
There should be a limit on
how many times a player
can guest for the same
team
The answers to this ques-
tion, not unrelated to Q2,
were split between exactly
50% agreeing, 34.5% dis-
agreeing, and the rest un-
sure. It may be of interest
to know that of 86 players
who have appeared as
guests so far this season,
just seven have appeared
more than four times for the
same team. SO perhaps this
isn’t really an endemic prob-
lem?
If you arrange for a guest
to turn up then you should
give them a game even if
it means benching ros-
tered players
The next question showed
that respondents were in
agreement that rostered
players should take prior-
ity over guests—see
graphic on next page. 68.3%
disagreed with the state-
ment that guests should be
guaranteed a game, though
to be fair there were 28 re-
plies that agreed with the
statement, completely or
slightly. (Continued on page 8)

In the standings last week in
both Divisions 1 and 3 we
had three-way ties which, as
mentioned in the round-up,
we sorted based on runs con-
ceded in games just between
these teams. A closer inspec-
tion of the Handbook sug-
gests that we should have
sorted the three-way tie
based on run difference in
games between the teams. By
this criterion, Thunder
should have been above Lions
in Division 1, and Pirates
above Outlaws in Division 3.
Thanks to Adam Roberts for
pointing this out.
Correction
The fielding and batting re-
strictions do not sufficiently
minimise the effect a guest
can have
Just over half of all responses
agreed with this suggestion,
with 27% disagreeing and
around 20% not expressing
an opinion. In common with
opther leagues, we insist that
guests bat at the bottom of
the order, but our fielding re-
strictions are much more lax
than other leagues.
SO, there we have it. Loaded
questions and a self-selecting
no doubt biased population,
(Continued from page 7) but we think it gives us a
pretty good snapshot of
opinions.
B UT the debate
does not end
here. The Exec
had a mid-season
meeting this week, and this
hot topic was one of the
items debated. The next
step is to set up a series of
consultative working group
meetings to which all play-
ers will be invited to express
their opinions. The aim will
be to establish some princi-
ples, and then to draft rule
proposals in time for the
end-of-season captains’
meeting.
