GOING unbeaten into
semi-finals can only be
done with consistent hit-
ting throughout the or-
der. The best way I can
demonstrate this is being
nearly three times

all three finals
at last week-
end’s Manchester Tourna-

Cup win puts them on
course for the “double”,
having taken over top
spot in the league by beat-
ing the Greensox, who
also lost the previous
week. As reported below,
Bats won Silver, and
Rippers won Bronze.

HAVING partici-
pated in another
mostly dry and
sunny Manchester
tourno, the headlines
of the weekend could
be about the weather
but let’s focus on
what really counts… Li-
ons three times champs!
How can you win MVP
playing catcher? Why are
the Camels not already in
Div 1? Will Scotland take
revenge in Edinburgh?
And most importantly
was it the strongest top
level ever?!
Historians (or Harry,
Dave W and Pete) can
argue the last point but
Lions were definitely
made to work throughout
with all teams posing a
challenge, whatever the
score lines showed. In
what will hopefully be the
standard going forward,
12 strong teams fought
out a top tier. A growing
flow of London exiles in
need of competition,
merging Manchester
teams and a strong Scot-
tish showing pushed the
level high. Hopefully this
trend continues to keep
Manchester in its rightful
place as 2nd city of UK
Softball.

will know, there
was no-one to collect

Thursday, thought
captains showed
great initiative by
emailing or texting
the sheets to the

all the score sheets
from last Wednesday
are lost in the post
somewhere between

Ed’s note: this report from two weeks
ago was sent to the wrong email ad-
dress, and so was omitted from the last

ANOTHER Wednesday evening,
another two-hour classic for the
Speeders. Another case of the
opposition racking up a sizeable
early (five-run) lead, the fast
ones finding their feet in the 5th
inning (as usual) and clawing
ahead and the humpbacks
then gamely fighting back in
the last inning to tie the game
from five runs back to take us
into a misty, gloomy 8th inning
as the edge of a mega storm
skirted the USG. Speeders
racked up four runs in lessening
light and then hung on to stop
the ships of the desert with a
final triumphant Nick Money
(SS) and Clare Heathcote (1B)
combo wrapping up another
corker of a hard groundball
play to seal the game.
BUT this was just another ex-
ample this season of a hugely
entertaining Division 2 contest
in which, as an habitué of this
tier (Speeders have won the di-
Match reports (from the last few weeks)
vision four times and been in it
for the last eight years) I would
argue this is the best array of
talent I’ve seen at this level for
a long time and the smallest
margin of difference between
the teams. Our record testifies
to this. Sitting in 4th place, in
exactly the middle, we have lost
by one run to 2nd-placed Cam-
els, beaten 3rd-placed Mayhem,
thumped and been thumped by
5th placed Mavs II, lost twice to
the Sharks and here were taken
right to the wire by a cracking
performance from bottom-
placed Camels II.
SPECIAL mention to fe-
male HR hitters, Rachel Sewell
for Camels II and Emma Ben-
nett for Speeders, an exemplary
centre-field catch and homer
from Adam Faloona and what
may be our infield play of the
year from veteran SS Nick
Money who, sprinting three
paces to his left nabbed a fast
groundball, pirouetted and
nailed his throw to 1st to beat
the male runner, defying
his age and any space-time con-
tinuum with a move worthy of
Sadlers Wells. Take a bow,
maestro ! Matt O’Casey

FOR the rematch against Phoe-

lineup and this worked in the
favour of the Rebels who won
31-7. What remained the same
was the fact that both teams
seemed to have a good time

Correction
In the previews (in BL 12) of
the three Division 3 games
on July 26th, the scores from
the first meetings this sea-
son had not been taken into
account. So Storm were 3-2
up on Drizzle (now 4-2), Ti-
gers 3-1 up on Pirates (now
4-1) and Bats 9-4 up on Out-
laws (now 10-4).
Transfer
Laura Somers, Drizzle to
Hurricanes, 25 July
IN the game between Thun-
der and Meerkats on 19th
July, Thunder brought in a
guest towards the end of
their game, playing 1½ in-
nings. Thunder won the
game by the run-ahead
rule. The guest, playing
“up”, fielded twice and bat-
ted once, in an illegal posi-
tion in the batting or-
der. The substitution had no
extenuating circumstances
and was done to give the
guest some extra playing
time.
The Thunder captain has
stated “I knew she was ros-
tered to a lower division team
and that because of that [I
believed] she could play any-
where and bat anywhere
(when playing up). I agree
it’s a mistake for not knowing
the rules.” The Meerkats
were unaware there was an
issue but are not seeking a
change in the result.
The Exec decided to levy a 2-
point deduction suspended
until the end of the season,
in line with recent rulings
against the Greensox and
Mavericks. The reasons for
this are:
1. It was deemed that no ad-
vantage was gained by
Thunder.
2. The game was almost over
with a run-ahead rule deci-
sion.
3. The decision to bring the
sub on was for a bat and not
an injury substitution.
4. Consistency with recent
rulings was taken into ac-
count.

End of season Ball
Every year we have a Ball after the
league finishes to celebrate the suc-
cesses and memories of the season,
and to hand out all the awards for
MVP, home-run trophy, and of
course the shields and medals for
the divisional winners. This year is
no exception, and the Annual End-
of-Season Ball will be on Saturday
4th November at the Radison
Hotel. The event will be a black-tie
event and to book your tickets you
can either e-mail Kellie Whitaker
([email protected]) or speak
to Ian Caird. Tickets are £40, but if
you pay before the season ends
there is an early-bird discount of
£5. If anyone does have any special
dietary needs please also let us
know about them when booking.
It is always a great fun event and it
would be great to see lots of people
there to celebrate all the achieve-
ments of 2017.

shit! HRs provided by too
many of the team to name
individually only go to show
why we went unbeaten up to
the semi-finals.
Thunder also showed why
sport is always played on the
field and not on paper by go-
ing from an 18-2 loss in the
morning to a semi which they
had every right to feel they
should have won. In a great
game that Thunder kept close
all the way, they had the win-
ning batter caught in the very
deep. Lions’ batting had fi-
nally dried up under pressure
and more would be needed for
a final against a strong un-
beaten Hairy Coos. Strength-
ened by some A grade
Chromies, they beat fellow
Scots the Souls to make the
final. The Scottish foe had
every bit the batting of the
Lions and so this proved in a
well cheered, drizzly final.
Thanks everyone for sticking
around!
In a great representation of
the team weekend, tourna-
ment-standard strong batting
throughout the line-up on
both teams kept the game
close until the 5th (10-8).

Bats win Silver Dawn Yates writes:
BUOYED by our success in
the League this season, the
Bats approached this year’s
Tournament with renewed
enthusiasm. But we surprised
even ourselves with our per-
formance over the weekend.
With only one loss on Satur-
day and a couple of Division 2
scalps in the bag, we found
ourselves at the top of the Sil-
ver table at the end of day 1.
Day 2 brought three more
wins and a loss to leave us 5
and 2 and still top of the table,
earning us a re-match with
the Speeders in the Silver Cup
Final.
In a tight and hard-fought
game, the Bats just managed
to edge it for our first silver-
ware in a long time! Victory
came at a price though, with
four injuries over the week-
end, most notably Rory
Lynch’s broken nose Sunday
lunchtime – huge thanks to
the sporting Outlaws for their
First Aid assistance and pa-
against Blue Jays. We were guar-anteed 2nd place in Bronze win, lose or tie, but we wanted to keep our winning streak going. This was by far our closest game of day 2. We went ahead then Blue Jays did. It went right down to the last hit, in the very last minute of the game. Amy Miller hit her third home run of the day to put us ahead by one. It was so close the blu told us if she had stayed at 3rd he would have had to roll the scores back and Blue Jays would have won. SO we were in the Bronze Cup Fi-nal against Pirates who had beaten us on Saturday and in the game we watched were unrelenting. Pretty much every one of them was hitting homers every at bat.
We took the lead in the first inning and never lost it. Inning after in-ning the Ripper spirit shone through, with every Ripper on the field, and our two cheerleaders on the sidelines giving their all. It was brilliant to be part of. On paper we didn’t have a chance, but we dug deep and showed what we were made of! THE final score was 11-5 (I think). We did it and won the Bronze Cup! This was possibly my favourite tournament to date, every team we played were a joy to play against. The umpires were a great bunch and officiated impeccably whilst keeping the element of fun in the game.
EVERYONE at Club Ripper wishes to thank Mike Goff and all his help-ers in organising such a brilliant tournament which was such a pleasure to be part of.

Rippers’ maiden trophy Dave Warren writes:
SATURDAY morning started with our three group games. We knew they would be tough but we were ready to give it our best. With a tie against Tigers and two losses in close games against Pirates and Detonators we were placed into Bronze. Our loss against Pirates carried over so we started the group 0-1. IN Bronze we truly did find our level. We quickly des-patched both Titans and Hackers, meaning we fin-ished the day on a high and in 3rd place behind Rebels and Pirates. SUNDAY started with a 9am game against Rebels. It was a very close game but we ended up winning 9-8. Over the river to meet Bolts, completely new to us, we had no idea about them. We were amazing in the field and pretty good with the bat too, fin-ishing the game 12-0 winners. We were now believing we would finish in the top two with four wins from four. NEXT up were Basehunters. Rip-pers have a few teams we feel we have an unofficial affiliation with, and Basehunters (Barflies) top that list, so we saw this game as a derby, although it felt more like a friendly. Anyway we defeated them 10-0, though in fairness Basehunters scored four in the final inning but scores were rolled back as we ran out of time. OUR final group game was
L OOKING after the Outlaws NSL team
landed in my lap after the departure of
most of the previous team to pastures red-
der and the Mavericks. As the Outlaws
club had lost many of its Division 1 players we knew
we had to reach out to Manchester and the North
West to field a competitive team and keep a coveted
spot for the North in the NSL.
Stephen Shearer from the Sharks stepped up to co-
captain the team and also brought some Scouse
Sharks along for the ride. We got a good response
from the Outlaws club and also from a few other
stalwarts in the Manchester League. So we reck-
oned we had a team, stumped up the cash, created
the Facebook group and started discussing positions
and tactics which Shearer loves!
IT was always going to be a tall order making any
impact on the NSL 2 league with a mixture of play-
ers who have had very little game time together. We
had some skilled individuals though and ground out
a few wins and ties in our first weekend. Our inex-
perience as a team showed most in not slotting away
close games and losing by the odd run. Shearer cal-
culated that if we had won the ties and the games
we lost by one we’d be sitting pretty at 5th or 6th in
the table. As it was after D2 we were in the relega-
tion zone. With no easy way back into the NSL
league, and a waiting list to contend with if we did
get relegated, we had to bank four wins at D3 to
have the best chance of keeping our place. That was
twice as many wins as we had so far had at either of
the previous weekends.
THE squad for D3 was looking strong, with our core
team bolstered by some great players who had also
played together frequently. I felt confident going
into day 1 against some good opposition. A great
first game against Ninos Privados, who were sitting
above us in the league, set our confidence high. We
got smashed by KK, the eventual winners but then
came back strong to beat the Royals
who were our target team sitting just
one place above us. We rolled into our
fourth game feeling good and pulled off
a fantastic 17-6 win against the Misfits
who ended Diamond in 3rd place. We
could have rounded out the day with a
tie in the derby against Mavericks but
for an error in the last play by myself;
not realising the winning run was on
3rd I made a good diving stop on a
hard ground ball but then decided to
hold the force on 1st and 2nd, idiot!
THREE out of five for the Saturday
and I was well chuffed with the team.
We needed one more win on the Sun-
day but we were playing three teams
all in higher league spots. A bad first
Outlaws at NSL game getting shafted by SPAM, then a slow game
against Blitz where we never got the sticks going left
us needing to beat Bees in what could have been our
last NSL game as a team.
HOME team advantage left us batting in the last in-
ning with no outs and one run required to win. I sent
Hector Martinez from 3rd to home in a close play, but
a good throw and tag just caught him on the back of
the shirt for the first out. Another out shortly after-
wards left us with a runner on 3rd with two outs and
Tash Miotk up to bat. A great under-pressure hit up
the middle on two strikes and two outs made it easy
for Shearer to run in the winner, but unfortunately
Tash decided to stop for a picnic on the way to 1st and
got thrown out at by a one-in-a-hundred throw from
the outfield! So we got the tie but not the win and
were now dependant on the Royals losing their game.
For health reasons I would advise any captain not to
rely on other teams losing as a strategy!
BUT they lost, and we stayed up #athletes,
#slideathome, #runitout, #knowthescore.
MANY thanks to all that supported us. I can’t wait to
play more NSL with you next year.
