WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

APRIL 29, 2012

A few words from our Vocations Director, Fr. Brian Barr

A few weeks back Tim Tebow made the news

on a Sunday morning and it had nothing to do with football. He was invited to deliver the

Easter sermon at a Christian Church in Austin, Texas. In his homily, he said the following,

“whatever happens in life, good or bad, hero or the heel, whether you like it or not, know that someone has a plan for you and it’s a

special plan.”

While his message was simple, he spoke an important truth. He challenged listeners to consider the fact that we are all subjects of a divine plan. Whenever we speak the words of the Lord’s Prayer, we ask that God’s will be done in our lives. Not necessarily the will of our families or friends, not even our own will, but that of God’s. While God’s will for each of us is often unclear and frequently challenging, we also know that, ultimately, it is in saying “yes” to His plan that we encounter meaning and fulfillment. On April 29th, the Church will celebrate World Day of Prayer for Vocations. In setting aside this 4th Sunday of Easter, all are asked to consider that “special plan” which Tim Tebow referenced in Texas. We’re challenged to consider how we respond to those four important words. Today, please pray in a particular way, for young people. Pray that they be open to the possibility that God could be calling them to the priesthood or religious life. Please take a moment and consider some of the young people you know, particularly those with a sense of faith and a desire to serve. Ask them to consider and pray about that “special plan.”

OPPOSE THE “REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACT”

The Reproductive Health Act seeks to have abortion declared a ‘fundamental right’ in New York, prohibiting even basic protections, such as parental notification, limits on government funding of abortion, and a ban on gender-selection abortions. The law would allow non-physicans to do abortions, jeopardize any agency that does not refer for abortion and seriously threaten conscience protections for hospitals and medical professionals. For the sake of pregnant women and their unborn children urge our legislators to oppose this bill.

Fourth Sunday of Easter The Rejected Savior

In the reading from Acts, Peter explains to the

leaders of Israel how a crippled man was healed. They probably expected Peter to take credit for the cure, so they were waiting for him to hang himself by his words. Peter, of course, gives the credit to Jesus and then makes two im-portant points.

First, he calls Jesus “the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone” (Acts 4:11). This reference to Psalm 118 was used often by the early Christians to show that Jesus, rejected by his fellow Jews and crucified, was actually doing God’s will when he gave his life on the cross. Thus he became not just a martyr, but the savior of the world. This gave comfort to those who had expected the leaders of Israel to follow Jesus and recog-nize him as the Messiah. It also told those leaders that they could be forgiven for crucifying Jesus if they would simply repent.

Peter’s second point was that Jesus is the one and only savior of the world. In those days the Roman emperor was considered to be a god and was called a savior. Peter says this to the leaders because they had to obey the em-peror and his appointed rulers over Israel. While we no longer look to politicians to be saviors, we need to remem-ber that Jesus is the Savior. He forgives our sins, shows us how to love God and our neighbor, and hears our prayers. He lives in us to support us when the answer to our prayers is no. And in the end, he is with us when we die to bring us to eternal life. When we love others—and are loved by others—we experience a taste of God’s love. Now the choice is ours: to reject the Savior or make him the cor-nerstone of our life. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

There are few openings for “Shepherds” in the classified ads today, but few occupations are as dear to the Christian heart. Most of us tenderly place shepherds by our Christmas cribs, name the Twenty-third Psalm as our favorite, and recognize “Good Shepherd” as a title of Jesus. Bishops carry a staff, called a crozier, modeled after the shepherd’s walking staff. Long before Christian artists painted Jesus on the cross, they traced on the walls of their worship places images of a strong young shepherd, shouldering a lost sheep and bringing it to safety. Springtime is the season of lambing, a time when the shepherd not only learns the faces of the new arrivals, but also when the newborn sheep become attuned to the voice of the shepherd. This is exactly what we do as a community in Easter as we shelter and guide the newly received Christians, and also put our Lenten muscles to good use: listening more attentively to God’s Word, and responding with springtime vigor to God’s call. —James Field, Copyright © J. ______________________ April 29, 2012 Today is called Good Shepherd Sunday. It is named for the Gospel reading that we are about to hear. Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd because he protects and cares for his flock. Gospel John 10:11-16

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.” The Gospel of the Lord. For Reflection: How must the sheep feel with such a protective shepherd? Who are these sheep? Prayer: Loving God, How tenderly your Son care for your sheep. When we feel lost and alone, help us to remember how much we are loved. Gather us together into one flock. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ, Our Risen Lord. Amen

April 29, 2012 Fourth Sunday of Easter ____________________

May 1, 2012 Today we remember St. Joseph the Worker, the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus. As a carpenter, Saint Joseph shows us

Most kids don't enjoy doing chores. It takes time away from play time and it can be boring as well as hard sometimes, but chores are very important in a family. Everyone must do his part to help out. Not only this, there is actually hap-piness to be found in working because to do chores is to offer something to the ones you care about in the same way that you give someone a gift – but in the case of work, the gift that you are giving is the gift of your-self. St. Joseph was the foster father of Jesus and he is the patron saint of workers. He is a patron of workers partly because he was a worker himself – a carpenter – but also because of the gift that he gave of himself when he agreed to take care of Mary and Jesus. Jesus was also a good worker. When Jesus was a child, until it was time for him to go out into the world, He helped his foster father St. Joseph with the carpentry work that needed to be done. We know that because Jesus never sinned, He certainly would have followed God's commandment to honor His parents. It is certain that Jesus never dishonored St. Joseph by refusing to do the work which St. Joseph asked Him to do. Families help each other even though it sometimes re-quires work. If you are ever frustrated by the work that you have to do to help your family, ask Jesus and St. Joseph to help you to be strong inside so that you can put away your bad feelings about it. Ask them to help you to remember how important it is for us not to ever be lazy and, most importantly, to serve each other for the sake of God's Kingdom.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Southampton Council #1967

2012 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic Service organization in the world. Founded by a young priest in 1882, the order has grown to 1.7 million members worldwide. With the four principles of our order being charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism… foremost comes charity. In 2009 alone, the Knights contributed over 143 million dollars and over 63 million man hours to various charitable activities.

Having embarked on a mission to spread God’s message of faith and love, we stand united with the Church. In countless ways our belief strengthens us to speak out for religious and moral values. As Knights our faith is our foundation. Dedicated to the Catholic Church’s growth, we encourage lay persons to participate as Parish Board members, lectors and ushers. By working hand in hand with oth-ers in service to God, our faith communities prosper. Knights of Columbus sponsor seminarians, support sanctity of life causes, create Catholic Scholarships, provide fraternal assistance and silently donate to many local charities and families in need. The only requirements are that you are a practicing Catholic male, 18 years or older…by the way, we never take attendance. Thank you for your time…have a great day and God Bless You.
