Pastor’s Letter April 28/29, 2018 Dear Parish Family,
“Is my dad in heaven?” This is the question that a young boy named Emanuele asked Pope Francis. The pope was visiting the parish of St. Paul of the Cross in Corviale, Italy. The children of the community were invited to ask the pope a question. When it was Emanuele’s turn the boy suddenly seemed embarrassed and afraid to ask his question. The pope waved to him and encouraged him. “Come”, said the Pope, “whisper your question in my ear.”
The other priests and adults from the parish encouraged Emanuel to go forward. When he finally reached the pope he whispered his question in the Holy Father’s ear. “My father has been gone for a short time. He was an atheist, but he baptized his four children. He was a good man. Is my dad in Heaven?" The pope whispered an answer and then turned to speak to the crowd. He began: “It's nice that a son says that about his father, that he was good. If that man was able to raise his children like that, then he was a good man. God is proud of that father." Then he asked the crowd: “Do you think that God would be able to leave a man like him far from Himself?” The crowd whispered an answer. The pope continued: “Do you think that? Louder, with courage." “No!” they replied loudly. The pope continued: “Does God abandon His children?” “No!” “Does God abandon His children when they are good?” “No!” The pope concluded: “Here, Emanuele, this is the answer. God surely was proud of your father..., Thanks Emanuele for your courage.” Pope Francis asked the boy’s permission to share this conversation with us. He clearly saw the pain and distress of this young boy as an opportunity to both be a shepherd and to teach us to be shepherds. That is what it means to be pastoral – the word literally coming from the care of shepherds for their sheep. In this time after Easter the gospels talk about many examples of care. Shepherds and sheep. Vine and branches. These are images of unity and they come directly from Jesus who told his disciples that one day there would be one flock and one shepherd. It is the work of criticism to emphasize what divides us. It is the work of ministry and care to build on what forgives and unites. I understand why Emanuele was afraid. How terrible to think that his father would be criticized for his atheism. But he had to ask the question. Perhaps deep down he knew what the pope would say. He had to hear him say it. It is clearly Pope Francis’ gift to be such a pastoral person. It is equally clear that he wants us to go and do the same. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

I grew up Catholic, but for some reason I just sort of stopped going to Church… I just moved to a new city, I tried going to a few different parishes, but I never really felt welcomed… I just donʹt understand why the Church teaches what it does! Some teachings seem so outdated… RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is the process through which non-
baptized adults enter the Catholic Church. RCIA is also the process in which adults baptized in
another Christian community, or baptized in the Catholic Church but never having completed the
Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) enter the Catholic Church in full
communion. This process includes several stages marked by study, prayer, and rites at Mass. If you or someone you know is inquiring about a return to full communion with our faith, or beginning a journey towards baptism please join us on Tuesday evenings for small group discussions.
Meetings held Tuesday Nights at 7:00 P.M. – 8:30 P.M in the office of Social Ministry in the Parish Rectory.
There is NO COST for participation in this program. For more information and to register please contact Jeannine Schmidt, Parish Social Ministry Office

Sharing Our Gifts through the CMA
As stewards, we choose to live our lives in thanksgiving to our generous God. Our actions and words - what we choose to do or not to do - are all examples of our gratitude. Christian stewards seek ways to share what we have been given. One very important vehicle for exercising our stewardship is the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The CMA allows us an opportunity to share our gifts in many different ways.
Gift of Financial Resources: Of course, when we think of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, we think of sharing our financial resources. More than 600,000 of our sisters and brothers received support and assistance from the funds shared through the CMA each year. It is rare that just one person or one parish could touch this many lives. The CMA brings us beyond the individual, the group and the parish and unites us as one Church of Long Island.
Gifts of Time and Talent: In addition to money, the CMA offers opportunities to share our time and talent. Parishes often form CMA committees to support a smooth and organized Appeal effort. Others share their gifts by volunteering in the ministries that the CMA supports. One of the great benefits of the Appeal is communication. People are informed of the many good works, programs and opportunities in this diocese. The CMA tells of the good works of the Church and communicates the opportunities to share our God-given gifts.
Gift of Prayer: The Catholic Ministries Appeal brings us closer to those we help and support. We can become more “connected” with our sisters and brothers through prayer. We may wish to pray for those who support the Appeal, those who volunteer, those who receive support and even those who cannot participate for whatever reason.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is Stewardship in action!
To make a donation, you can also visit CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or call us at 516-678-5800 ext. 296
Thank You!

Eucharistic Adoration
Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life The Catechism quotes Saint John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease. Our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.
Our Lady of the Hamptons Mr. Christopher Scapellati and his Prep 8 students hosted over one hundred local senior citizens as part of their outreach to the Senior Community. Luncheon was served as good conversation was shared and door prizes awarded. Entertainment was provided by the Senior Tap team and the Hamptones.
The twenty-five young men who comprise the Hamptonix, OLH’s singers, traveled to Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood and provided a mini-concert, visited residents and assisted with special crafts projects.
Miss Kacey Schick and her third graders prepared the post-Easter liturgy that also featured a special birthday treat for thee Mass’ celebrant, Father Paul Dahm.
The competition tap teams at OLH brought home significant awards for their performance in the recent That’s Entertainment Regional finals. The dancers, boys and girls from grades one through eight are choreographed by Mrs. Elyse Curro. Now…more than ever…there is need for a strong Catholic elementary education on the East End! Registration for the September 2018 school year at OLH is open now, with space available in Kindergarten, grades 1 and 5. Space is limited in grades 2and 3, with waiting lists in grades 4 and 6. Interested families are asked to call for personal appointments and tours.
Placement in the elite OLH Prep program for grades 7 and 8 is at a premium, so early consideration is advised. This program features Regents level courses in Math and Science, as well as an aggressive ELA curriculum, integrated Fine Arts and competitive sports programs in volleyball, basketball, baseball, cross-country and softball. Personal interviews are required.
OLH Pre-school for three and four year old children is offered at the campus of St. Rosalie’s Church in Hampton Bays. Registration for the 2018-19 school year is beginning now. The OLH Pre-school offers bi-lingual teachers, enrichment in dance, as well as pre-reading and readiness for kindergarten. Tours and conferences leading toward admission can be arranged. Informational packets are available. Call 631-283-9140 to set up a personal appointment and tour. More information is available on the website www.olh.org.

Rockville Centre Diocese, 516-678-5800, ext.626, www.respectlife.drvc.org Birthright, 631-728-8900, 800-550-4900
The Diocese of Rockville Centre provides both information and support services in regard to
the Life issues, particularly in regard to crisis pregnancy, when abortion is being considered
as the only way out of a difficult situation. There is a diocesan outreach program, with a 24-
hour confidential hotline, where a woman with an unexpected pregnancy can turn for help:
call 1-855-301-4247, or a call can be made to OPTIONLINE at 1-800-712-HELP(4347).
How hard it is to believe that someone who has been serious trouble has been rehabilitated! How hard
it is to trust that such a person has converted to a totally new and noble way of life! Certainly, Jesus’s
disciples struggled to accept Saul, the persecutor of Christians, when he first entered their presence as
one of them. It took action to convince them that Saul had truly become Paul, a leader and defender of
the faith. St. John writes of the critical importance of love in deed and truth, not just word or speech.
And Jesus speaks of the necessity of bearing fruit. Let us take from Sunday’s readings these funda-
mental lessons: that even the worst among us can be transformed and that we must match our good in-
tentions with good actions. Of such is the kin-dom of God.
Reflections On the Gospel

Would you like to become a Extraordinary Minister of Holy
Communion?
New training sessions have been scheduled for May at St.
Rosalie’s in Hampton Bays. If you feel called to this
important ministry and would like to attend you must
contact Fr. Mike at [email protected] to be
registered.
Be A Year Round Friend and Supporter of SHJM It’s that time of year when the days get colder and a time when many SHJM parishioners have active
plans. The migration of summer visitors, people heading to warmer climes for the winter, vacations,
and travels all diminish the numbers of those who are able to worship here each week. But please
remember that our parish itself is here year round and we never take a break from service and
ministry. Last year we began a program of planned, automated giving, called First Fruits. It was a
huge success and well over 10% of our supporters participate in this way. It enabled our parish to
maintain a more consistent year round income. Automated giving can help insure that our parish
remains strongly supported. So here are some ways you can do this:
First Fruits: The easiest, and best if you are technologically challenged is to
enroll in First Fruits. All you need to do is give us a void check and fill out a
Frist Fruits Form. You can get one on our website, at the rectory, or at the back
of church. First Fruits transfers a contribution either weekly or monthly from
your checking account to the church.
Online Bill Pay: Chances are your bank already had a online check writing
service called Bill Pay. If you have online access to your checking account you can set it up to write a
regular check to SHJM. Just visit your online banking site and set it up for the contribution you
desire. Remember to include your Envelope Number.
Pay Pal: Pay pal is another way you can make regular contributions. Soon it will also be a way that
you can contribute using Credit Cards. Check our website and check back here for more information.
