The Four Marks of the Church: Apostolic

What do we mean when we say that the Church is an Apostolic Church? It lies in at least two

ideas: 1) its structure and 2) its message, teaching and truth.

Structure:

First of all the church was founded on the Apostles, with Peter as the Rock (Matthew 16:18ff).

This means that the Church is a visible organization, not merely a spiritual organization of “all

believers”in the world. There are physical ties between individuals and the Apostles. This is

drawn out by the events in Acts Chapter 8 when Peter, James, and John went down to Samaria to see the people who

had been baptized in John the Baptist’s baptism but had accepted the gospel of Jesus as the Messiah. Peter, James

and John, noticing the lack of charismatic activity asked if they had received the Holy Spirit. Of this the Samaritans

were ignorant. So they laid hands on them for the reception of the Holy Spirit, and the Samaritans began to speak in

tongues. This is the first recorded confirmation in scripture tying the Samaritans with the Apostolic Church. No

Apostles— no Holy Spirit.

Second, after the establishment of the Church in Judea and Samaria (as ordered by Christ) the Apostles spread out

through the Roman Empire and beyond to preach the gospel and to found churches wherever they went. These

churches, begun by the Apostles were hence Apostolic Churches. The Overseers they selected and ordained were the

first Bishops— successors to the Apostles. Because of this, the Bishops were known to have a direct link to the

Apostles. Also, those who were selected in succession of these bishops were said to have a link to the Apostles and

records were kept in those churches (dioceses). This custom persists to this day.

Message, Teaching and Truth:

As for the message of salvation, the teaching of the church and her possession of the truth, the promise of the Lord

that the Paraclete (Holy Spirit) would come and lead the Apostles into all truth, has traditionally been understood as a

parallel to the imparting of the full knowledge of Torah to Moses on Sainai. This action of the Holy Spirit gave

infallible truth to the Twelve Apostles distributively for the good of the Church, which in turn was passed on to the

Bishops. Therefore, the fullness of the Truth of what Jesus taught, along with the fullness of Truth and understanding

was given charismatically to the Church at Pentecost in a seminal state that would be opened to the Church down

through the ages by the successors of the Apostles and confirmed by the Successor of Peter.

The Church’s Teaching, called the Magisterium and the Apostolic Tradition are both part of what we call “The

Deposit of the Faith”entrusted to the Apostles by Christ and His Holy Spirit. This “Deposit”has been handed down

in both word and writing since that time. The writings, some of which are in the Bible, and others of which are in

documents contemporary with the Apostles and the first Bishops are still read today in both the original languages

and in translation. They are taught to priests and theologians in both theology schools and Universities. If they are

read from within the tradition that composed them, they can be accurately interpreted. But, if they are read apart from

the Tradition, they can be twisted so as to be unrecognizable. This is why we need both the visible structure of Pope,

Bishops, and priests to “check”theologians who have cast aside some of the moorings of the Apostolic Tradition.

Fidelity to the Tradition is just as important as knowing the tradition. It is incumbent on

every teacher of the Tradition to be sure he or she is not going “maverick”on the Church’s

teaching; theologians must also be faithful to the Church in all things of faith and morals.

sponsored/hosted the annual summer “Garden Project”.

We need help to continue this fun and well received

project. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to

come to Mass 15 minutes early and stay 15-30 min-

utes after Mass has ended, on one weekend per

month (July through Sept) to staff our table in the

Narthex and deposit the donated funds. It's a great way

to meet fellow parishioners, as well as help the Parish

and Grand Valley Catholic Outreach, who benefits from
