SACRAMENTS
Baptisms
You must be a registered parishioner and
attend two sessions of baptism classes. These
sessions are held the first and third Thursday
of every month. Please call the Business
Office to schedule the baptism date and sign
up for the classes. Marriage
According to the Archdiocesan guidelines
and to ensure adequate preparation for this
very important Sacrament, you must make
arrangements at least six (6) months ahead of
the Marriage date. Special instructions are
required for any Catholic party under 19
years of age. No date can be set for this
marriage. A Civil Marriage License should be
obtained two weeks in advance of marriage.
To set a wedding date here at St. Gerald
Catholic Church, you must be a registered
parishioner for 3 months.
We as St. Gerald Parish, are a Eucharistic Community who will help each other to be good
and faithful stewards of God’s love. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we will accomplish this
through prayer, worship, education and service.
ST GERALD PARISH
First Friday Exposition: For the months of June, July
and August, First Friday Exposition will be held at 96th
and Q. The 8:15 mass on those days June 3, July 1, and
August 5 will be held at 96th and Q. Confessions will be
offered at 7:45 am and 11:45 am on these days. Exposi-
tion will begin at the end of the 8:15 mass and will contin-
ue until just before the 12:15 mass. It will conclude then.
I have given this devotion time to mature over the past 9
months but it has not garnered the support such a devotion
ought to have. The numbers who have chosen to spend
time with the Blessed Sacrament were so low that at times
the Exposed Blessed Sacrament was left unattended.
Next school year, beginning in September, we will re-
sume Exposition at the Lakeview Chapel and we will con-
clude Exposition when we have the 2:30 pm devotions
with the children.
The Practice of Saving Pews: It has become a practice
here to save pews at major liturgical and performance
events. Other than the pews that are saved that are actual-
ly purchased at the Angel Auction…the practice has got-
ten to be dissonant with the first priority of Stewardship:
Hospitality. Although a family may wish to sit together
there has to be some effort on the part of those for whom
the pew is being saved to come as soon as possible. Peo-
ple have become frustrated and have felt unwelcome
when they walk around the church 10 minutes before
mass to the various places that are open only to find they
are being held for someone. The reports of rudeness, foul
language, downright inhospitableness by some of the
guests at the Christmas Play both in the church and in the
parking lot is legendary. I brought this subject up for dis-
cussion with the Pastoral Council and found almost uni-
versal support in trying to eliminate the practice of pew
saving at major liturgical events. Some of our discussion
involved perhaps allowing pew saving but when it is 10
minutes or so before the event…all saving would stop. I
brought up the possibility of providing a shuttle between
the Hy-Vee parking lot and our own at the high attended
masses on Christmas and Easter. Right now we will deal
with the major performance events where it seems pew
saving has become rampant by keeping the doors of the
Church closed and locked until a certain time prior to the
event’s beginning…publishing this time and holding to it.
I would have no problem charging a healthy fee for the
saved pews but this might take some study before it is
implemented. Maybe as a way of supporting the Music
Program at the school we should treat the Christmas Pro-
gram in the same way a play at Ralston High is treated.
May 22, 2011 2 Welcome to St. Gerald Parish
Purchase tickets ahead of time. But this method will not be
used for Liturgical Events because it is dissonant with the prin-
cipal of Hospitality from another perspective. With this an-
nouncement the discussion will continue. But raising this issue
will, I pray, have us all look at ourselves and our practices to
see how it affects others. Maybe some conscience formation
will alleviate a lot of the problem. I know I will come to a de-
cision before I send out the next Advent/Christmas letter to the
general parish. So, think about what you are doing and how
you could solve the pew saving issue without actually having
someone from the family stake out a pew. If that one can get
there…why not the whole crew. Maybe we could look at how
our parking lot could empty or fill in a more organized fash-
ion—our security folks might want to look at this. Maybe we
could hire off duty police officers to direct traffic on and off of
96th and Q streets. For Christmas Day masses and Easter
masses you can’t be there any sooner than about 30 minutes or
less to get a pew saved anyway. And for sure….Midnight Mass
and the Easter Vigil have lots of room. Sooo, I am not ready to
lay down a new law about this….right now I am looking for
you to look at yourselves for a time.
Memorial Day: This major civic feast is coming up on us real
soon. Maybe when it gets here we really will be into the warm
weather. We will have only one mass that day and it will be a
9:00 am at 96th and Q.
A Little Color: We are going to put in a nice little planter
around the St. Gerald sign at the office and add a splash of col-
or with some nice annuals. I already have replanted my impa-
tience once…since, you see, I was impatient at getting my im-
patience in and so they froze. Now we will see how they do. I
know some of the volunteers who signed up to help with land-
scaping from the Stewardship Forms will be asked to help with
some of these projects including putting in a little outdoor patio
in front of the south door of my house. I am grateful for those
who volunteered to help me with my pottery shop: wiring and
construction.
Financial Report: I hope you liked getting the report that we
placed in the bulletin last week. If you did not get a chance to
view the charts and the letter then you can find the same on the
web site. After we close out the fiscal year we will share with
you a similar report. The good news is that we will probably
end the fiscal year in the black. There was an increase in col-
lections that took care of some maintenance items that pushed
that part of the expenses over what was expected.

Thank You
Thank you to all the parishioners at
St. Gerald who have prayerfully sup-
ported us during this difficult journey
with cancer. Bill received wonderful
results from his assessment recently
showing a significant decrease in the
tumors and one disappearing com-
pletely. We greatly appreciate the
kind words offered. As our journey
with cancer continues, we join you in
prayer for all those suffering from this
disease. God bless you for giving us
hope. Bill & Mary Harper
To Everyone at St Gerald Parish
Tracy, the boys, and I would like to
thank everyone for all they have done
over the last year and a half. From all
the food, support and prayers, it is
very humbling how you all responded,
from coming to the fundraiser, all the
anonymous donors and a special
thanks to the guardian angels.
Sincerely, Marty & Tracy Nemec

EPS Thank You Essential Pregnancy Services is grateful for your partici-
pation in the Mother's Day Rose Donation Drive. Each individual act of
generosity multiplied by the 19 parishes participating in this year's drive
will cover the cost of 83 ultrasound procedures--that's approximately
11.5% of the annual expenditure for fetal imaging done at EPS. Statistics
show that of those women considering abortion, 75% change their minds
and choose life for their little one after viewing the ultrasound image of
the child in their womb. Thank you for the precious lives YOU helped
save this Mother's Day.
