FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

MAY 19, 2019

The shrine of Our Lady of Vailankanni (Our Lady

of Good Health), known as the “Lourdes of the

East”, is a large church in South India with the

status of a minor basilica and is the destination of

more than two million pilgrims every year. The

busiest season is during the nine days of the

Novena ending on September 8th

, the feast day, and

the commemoration of the birthday of Mary (nine

months after the observance of her Immaculate

Conception on December 8th

Dear Parishioners of St. Mary’s,

I write this week to update you on the financial situation of the parish.

1) You may or may not be aware that the parish has owned the furniture store across the

street for many years and it has been leased out for $8,500.00 per month. This money has

been used part of the annual operating budget. Since I have been here (July 1, 2018) the

finance council, parish council, the diocesan real estate team and I have been negotiating

with the lessee to sell him the property. We completed that deal in February. The

$2,000,000.00 realized from the sale is to be used exclusively to create an endowment for the

parish at the instruction of the bishop. We have settled on an investment manager after

meeting with four different firms and the money will soon be working for the future of the

parish. In the short term, our operating budget is down $8,500.00 per month, but we expect

a bigger return on the investment in the long term. I must offer special thanks to parishioner

Sandy Zimmerman for many hours spent shepherding this deal through.

2) Since I have been here our operating account has remained steady at about $70,000.00.

This means that what we receive every month is roughly equivalent to what we spend every

month. At first glance this seems satisfactory, but it does not take into account making

repairs. We have some major repairs to undertake in the near future not the least of which is

the repair of the school roof (ca. $125,000.00) and the completion of the steeple renovation

and repair (cost unknown at the moment).

3) The parish has about $135,000.00 invested in a money market account earning 2.25%

interest. We have immediate access to that money if needed but am trying to leave it alone

as a “rainy day” fund. In my previous and present experience as a pastor I have learned

that one never knows what tomorrow may bring!

4) As the school continues to grow, which is a good thing, so does their need for space. The

parish has access to the school rooms during the evenings and weekends, of course, but if we

allow the school to continue to grow, we will need to forfeit the space in the school to which

we have access during the day for Bible study, money counters, meetings which take more

space than the rectory dining room, etc. Sooner or later the school will also need the space

occupied by the Religious Education offices and the music offices. We have just begun to

consider the possibilities for gaining space for these activities and offices elsewhere on the

property. With the help of the diocesan legal office we are currently re-negotiating with the

school concerning rent, utilities, interior renovations, etc.

5) I am currently working with our bookkeeper on revised annual budget for St. Mary’s, the

meat and potatoes of which will be made available to you by July 1st. More to follow. Stay

tuned to your bulletin, and thanks for your support. Fr. Ringley

SAINT MARY CHURCH – MAY 19, 2019

A corto plazo, nuestro

Nosotros, hombres y mujeres, obtendremos mejores

“Patience is power. Patience is not an absence of action; rather it is "timing" it waits on the right time to act, for the right principles and in the right way. Fulton J. Sheen

THE PIETÀ. In most of our lives, we will face events that tempt us to despair. These events may be small encounters in our relationships with others that leave us feeling hopeless, discouraged and disappointed. At other times, we may encounter grave and tragic events that seem to leave us in utter desperation. The meaning of the Pietà, our Blessed Mother cradling the dead body of her Son, can never be exhausted. It’s an image of hope in the midst of seeming hopelessness. It’s an image of love that conquers all fear. It’s an image of faith in the perfect plan of God no matter what comes. Think of this tender image of our Blessed Mother with the sacred body of her divine Son resting in her lap. Think of her pain and sorrow. Ponder also her faith in the promise of her Son, her hope in the fulfillment of that promise, and her love, which enabled her to press on through her own grief. There is much we can learn from our Blessed Mother. Her heart, in particular, was one that shone brightly with the perfection of every virtue. She is a pillar of grace and strength surrounded by suffering. She is an example for all.

PRAYER TO

SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense

against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God

rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the

heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and

all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin

of souls. Amen.

Book Review

St. Mary’s parishioner Marcia Segelstein has written a book entitled Don’t Let

the Culture Raise Your Kids. (The book is published by Our Sunday Visitor

and is available in the St. Mary’s Bookstore).

Quoting the biography on the book’s cover, “Marcia Segelstein has covered

family issues for more than twenty-five years as a producer for CBS News and as

a columnist. She has written for Fox News.com, First Things, WORLD

Magazine, and Touchstone, and is a senior editor for Salvo magazine. Marcia is a

graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She and her

husband have two “twenty-something” children”.

This book is designed as a guide for parents to help them protect their children

from many of the problems which plague our modern culture. The six short

chapters cover the critical role of parents as authority figures, schools, media

(especially cellphones and television), sex, pornography, and consumerism.

Each chapter includes a frank discussion of the problem (with supporting data)

and concludes with a section entitled “Solutions, Tips, and Tools”. An appendix

lists resources to help parents further educate themselves about the issues

covered in the book, as well as copious footnotes citing the sources of the

information contained in it.

Parents will find this book a helpful, simple, and straightforward guide to raising

their children to live in the context of our modern culture without being poisoned

or destroyed by it. A bonus is that it is written from a completely orthodox

Catholic point of view. I highly recommend it and thank Marcia for having

written it.

Title: Symphony inspired by the chant Salve Regina

One of our newest parishioners Salvatore Di Vittorio is a composer and

native of Italy, where his music is published under Casa Ricordi. He is

also the Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra of New York which

performs at Carnegie Hall, and his family - including his wife Santa

Maria and young son Giuseppe - come to St. Mary's from their home in

Westchester. They love St. Mary's parish, and cherish the wonderful

music presented by the Schola every Sunday.

After five years in the making, Salvatore recently completed his

Symphony No. 4 Metamorphoses for orchestra, after the Roman poet

Ovid's Metamorphoses. The almost 30-minute work was inspired by

three related Italian paintings and the chant Salve Regina, which

Salvatore felt personalized his Catholic connection to the culmination of

Ovid's story ending and the founding of Rome. The principal melody is

inspired by the first five notes of the chant, and then the chant's ending

line is fully orchestrated at the end of his symphony. Salvatore will be

recording the composition along with other works for Naxos Records

later this year, and hopes to have the world premiere performance in

Rome.

Salvatore will lead the orchestra in a performance of the second

movement Venus and Adonis (after the Titian painting) on Thursday,

June 27th at DiMenna Center in New York, which includes a post-

concert reception. In early June, the orchestra performs the music of W.

A. Mozart on Thursday, June 6th at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall. For more

Registered Parishioners & Envelopes If you have not used your envelopes for the last six months, you are in inactive status. If you would like to stay an active parishioner, but are not receiving envelopes, please contact Sue Genovese in the Religious Education office. Call @ (203) 866-7429 ext. 111 or visit the office after the Masses on Sunday. In order to obtain a Sponsorship Certificate from the pastor you need to be an active member of the Church, and have all your sacraments. Remember that if the pastor does not know you, the only way to prove you attend Mass each week, is to use your envelopes. Thank you for your help.
