Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, This Sunday, Catholic Christians celebrate the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In every Scripture selection we have for this Sunday, we hear that all people are God’s children, and God welcomes all people to follow him. Unfortunately, through the ages, there have been many people who have tried to keep others from God. As Catholic Christians, this is not acceptable thinking, for “catholic” means “universal,” and “universal” means “everyone.” Our challenge is clear: always be on the alert to combat exclusionary thinking and action, and always be ready to welcome everyone to our Church and parish. The teachers of St. Mary Catholic School have returned for the new School Year. Welcome back! I pray that this will be a most exciting year for the students, teachers, and staff of St. Mary School! Our first School Mass will be on Friday, September 1st at 8:30 a.m. Then, all the Friday Masses will be at 8:30 a.m. until the end of the academic year. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Principal Joyce M. Price

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16

The countdown is on! I am looking forward to seeing you all next week on Monday and/or Tuesday evenings for Orientation Nights. During the last 2 months, lots of cleaning, polishing, painting, and planning have been going on here, all in preparation to provide the very best Catholic education for our students. In the last newsletter, I introduced our four new faculty members. That email was also posted in the Basilica’s Sunday Bulletin.

The faculty began their first day last Thursday. If you would like to shop the Gently Used Uniform Closet please call ahead on any of the other Teacher Work Days to make sure that someone can serve you. In addition to the dates and times listed on our school calendar, I will give you as much detail as I can for Orientation Nights. Monday, August 21st, 5:30-6:30 pm. PreK Parent/Student Orientation, Cafeteria and Classroom We will begin in the cafeteria for a general welcome and then move to the classrooms to visit teachers. Please enter the front doors of the lower school on 4th Street. Tuesday, August 22nd, 5:00-6:30 pm. Parent/Student Orientation, K-8, Basilica, Lower School, Tileston Center, and Gym. Please enter each building through the front doors. • All students, parents, and teachers will begin in the Basilica followed by meeting teachers in classrooms. • Parent/Student Meeting in Basilica, 5:30 pm. – Kindergarten and New Families to St. Mary School (remain after general meeting) • Booster Club and Home and School Association board members will be at tables in both buildings to greet you. • Music Teachers (Ms. Senft, Dr. Spencer, and Mr. Williams) will be in first floor entrance of Tileston Center to greet you and give you infor-

mation regarding their classes. • Art Teacher (Ms. Frey) will greet you in her first floor Tileston classroom. • Teachers of PreK-4th will greet you in their classrooms in the Lower School • Teachers of Grades 5-8 and Technology/Library will greet you in their classrooms on 2nd floor of Tileston Center. • The gym will be open where Mr. Viollis (Athletic Director) and Mrs. Parker (P.E. Teacher) will greet you. Please walk on sidelines to view

the beautiful gym floor and the new bleachers. • “Gently Used Uniform Shop” in cafeteria will be open on Tuesday, 5:30-6:30 pm. We have received very positive feedback from the families of our graduates. Most recently a graduate’s parent took the time to share these thoughts with me. I will share a portion of her letter below. “The academics in the middle school are fantastic. The teachers really got to know my daughter and they really challenged and inspired her aca-demically. Being able to take math classes that were 2 grade levels above her current grade was a real blessing. She will be very prepared for high school next year. The teachers are top notch. They love what they do and the students really see that and feel their energy. They just have a way of bringing out the best in students while helping them with the little things they struggle with. I also applaud you on your wonderful discipline system in the school. The students always knew what was expected of them and what would hap-pen if they chose not to follow the rules. This really helped to eliminate distractions in the classroom and gave teachers more time to teach. Finally, as a Catholic family, we really enjoyed the way that faith and love was always such a core message at the school. It was nice to hear the message that faith is important and that you should always treat people as Jesus would.” WE NEED YOUR HELP! We would like to share St. Mary School with more students. One way we share our news is on our 2 Facebook pages…one for the school and one for our Athletics. Would you please visit our Facebook pages, like them, and share them with others? Thanks so much! I look forward to having our school family together this week. Welcome to all of our new families! We appreciate all of our families choosing St. Mary Catholic School for your children’s education. I had the privilege of attending the dedication of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. For those of you who have been here for quite some time, I had the pleasure of congratulating Fr. Ned, now a bishop. Of course, it was a delight to share in Bishop Burbidge's joy and listen to his homily. He was there along with dozens of priests, numerous bishops, and one cardinal. The video of the entire ceremony is on the diocesan website. You can enjoy it in parts and may want to share some of it with your students. I have several pictures of Mother Seton's statue to which our school donated $2,000 as did all of the other diocesan schools.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – August 19 and August 20, 2017
