Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends, This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter. On this day, we hear Jesus tell his disciples before his Ascension, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give
it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid” (John 14: 26-27). Congratulations to St. Mary Health Center for receiving a grant of $50,000 from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation. This money will be used for the surgical procedures of the St. Mary Dental Clinic, one of the 2 branches of the Health Center. The Diocese of Raleigh has formally announced that there are no plans to build a Catholic high school in the Cape Fear Deanery at this time. Perhaps one day in the future, such a high school will be possible. For Catholic Christians, May has often been called “Mary’s month,” perhaps this is the month that we celebrate Mother’s Day in the United States. In some homes, people create “May altars.” The photo is from our sister parish in Honduras. Every day of May, people bring flowers for the May altar in their churches and chapels and say special prayers. You may want to have a home May altar too! Congratulations to all who are making their First Communion! We have about 150 young people celebrating this sacrament in 11 Masses at St. Mary this year. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Sixth Sunday of Easter Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – April 30 and May 1, 2016 6
Sixth Sunday of Eater St. Mary Social Ministry/Tileston Outreach We are moving closer and closer to the great feast of Pentecost when we celebrate our Birthday. For the past several weeks the word of God comes to us in the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of John. In the Acts we listen to our beginnings…in John we listen to Jesus’ message at His Last Supper – love one another. Today the message continues. The Holy Spirit does not place burdens on us that make it impossible for us live in peace. Keep attuned to my message of caring for one another. I am giving you my spirit so you can live the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. There are so many groups both in our Parish community and outside that offer us an opportunity to practice mercy. Just drop in to the Outreach and you see and feel mercy in action on the part of the volunteers and our guests. Last week this was so apparent as the volunteers helped a homeless senior woman be whole again. Small acts of kindness go along way. During this Easter season am I feeling Jesus’ presence within me and around me?

Visit the Imprisoned
In this Jubilee of Mercy, we are called to engage in the corporal (bodily) and spiritu-al works of mercy. This sign, found in the Honduran re-treat center of Tres Rosas (Three Ros-es), reminds us to “Visit the Impris-oned.”

St. Mary School Golf Classic - Thank you to Mr. Tom Kennedy (Olivia-8th) and the Boost-er Club Board, parent, staff, parishioner volun-teers and Mr. Viollis for a wonderful day at Porters Neck Plantation. We heard lots of compliments from the players regarding the course and lovely luncheon at the club. Thanks to all the golfers who played to support our Athletics Pro-gram. We invite each one to visit our gym to see all the projects which have been accomplished with the proceeds from the various sports events. It was a perfect day! Wilmington Symphony - The middle school music classes were treated to a performance by the Concerto winner along with Dr. Stephen Errante, conductor of the symphony. Building Projects - Gymnasium - Gym classes will begin Monday on the new gym floor. Extra care needs to be given to keep the floor in the best condition. Most importantly...all students need to have their gym shoes with them for class, simply following policy. Elevator - You will now see construction trucks as the work on the new elevator has begun. The crew is doing all the preliminary work and the major work will be done after the last day of school. Science Lab - In addition to these physical plant improvements, a new Science Lab will be created on the 2nd floor during the sum-mer. Annual Home and School Fundraiser "Dancing with the Stars" and Silent Auction Saturday, May 14th - 7:00pm We invite you to please support this event. All parents are mem-bers of this organization. The proceeds from this event provide enrichment assemblies, technology upgrades, and many other activ-ities and materials which add to the student programs of our fine school. Besides the support, it's going to be so much fun! Come out and vote for your favorite dancers who can be found on the adver-tising email sent to you. We are delighted to have a graduate of St. Mary, a faculty member, parents, and active members of our Wil-mington community participating to benefit your children.
