A Tradition of Excellence

education within the context of the historic Christian faith, Hope is a place of open inquiry, acceptance of intellectual challenge, rigorous engagement with hard questions, and vigorous but civil discussion of different beliefs and understandings.

Hope is among a select group of colleges highlighted in the book "Putting Students First: How Colleges Develop Students Purposefully." The institutions were included specifically for being "individually and collectively distinguished and distinctive in fostering holistic student development."

Hope has been a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) since 1956. Its teams compete in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), America's oldest collegiate conference. Hope has crowned 28 individual and team Division III national champions. Fielding 18 intercollegiate sports, nine for men and nine for women, Hope has received the Commissioner's Cup of the MIAA eight consecutive years for having the best cumulative finish in league-sponsored sports.

The college has engaged in an ambitious campus development program over the past decade with building projects totaling more than $100 million. New baseball and softball stadiums opened in 2008. The Richard and Helen DeVos Fieldhouse, site of the 2008 and 2009 Division III women's basketball championships, is a state-of-the-art venue that opened in 2005. The Van Andel Soccer Stadium opened this fall.

Hope College successfully balances highly regarded academic and intercollegiate programs.

The college is serving 3,230 undergraduate students who come from 42 states and 28 foreign countries. The curriculum offers courses in 89 majors, leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.

Hope College was founded in 1866 by settlers from the Netherlands. Its athletic teams have a distinct Dutch touch, the women's teams known as the Flying Dutch and the men as the Flying Dutchmen. The Dutch roots also led to the selection of orange and blue as the school's colors. The athletic mascot is known as "Dutch."

Since its founding, Hope College has been affiliated with the Re-formed Church in America. The current student body represents a broad cross section of faiths.

2008-09 Highlights

Hope College has won the MIAA Commissioner's Cup cham-pionship more than any other member school. With Commissioner's Cup championships 24 of the last 30 years, Hope has won the honor a league-leading 31 times, including 2008-09.

Hope fields teams in all of the league’s 18 sports for men and women. Sports offered men at Hope include cross country, football, golf, and soccer in the fall, basketball and swimming in the winter and baseball, tennis and track in the spring.

Hope won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Commissioner’s Cup for the best cumulative performance in the league’s 18 sports for men and women. Hope ranked 37th among 310 NCAA Division III colleges in the NACDA Director’s Cup national standings.

Hope captured four MIAA titles – volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s swimming & diving and women’s tennis.

Hope qualified individuals or teams in 11 NCAA championships – men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s track & field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.

Eight athletes were voted the MIAA’s most valuable player – Steve Strock, golf; Allison VanBeek, soccer; Jesse Reimink and Carrie Snikkers, basketball; Kelli Duimstra (softball), Nora Kuiper (track & field), John Pelton and Samantha Stille, tennis.

Sixty-six athletes were voted to All-MIAA teams and 191 were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, including 21 for a fourth consecutive year. A record 12 teams received the MIAA All-Academic Team GPA Award. The women’s cross country team received the honor for an 11th consecutive year. Other teams honored included women's basketball, men's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, women's soccer, softball, women's swimming & diving, women's track & field, and volleyball.

Six athletes achieved Division III All-America status – Jesse Reimink and Carrie Snikkers, basketball; Kelli Duimstra, softball; Nora Kuiper and John Donkersloot, track & field; and John Pelton, tennis.

Senior Nora Kuiper became the first Hope female athlete to win an NCAA Division III track & field national championship with a gold medal performance in the 100-meter dash. She was also honored as the outstanding senior scholar-athlete in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the nation’s top Academic All-American in women’s track & field, and was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Voted Hope’s outstanding senior student-athletes were Nora Kuiper (track & field) and Jesse Reimink (basketball).

Tennis All-American John Pelton was presented the Division III Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award for the Central Region and the MIAA’s Stowe Sportsmanship Award.

Longtime men’s athletic director Ray Smith retired, concluding 39 years of service that included 25 seasons (1970-94) as football coach.

Both Hope basketball teams topped NCAA Division III in home attendance and the volleyball team ranked second nationally. Hope was host to the NCAA Division III women’s basketball final four for the second straight year.

Ground was broken for the new Van Andel Soccer Stadium. It is the fourth major athletic facility built at Hope in recent years joining the DeVos Fieldhouse, Boeve Baseball Stadium and Wolters Softball Stadium.

Four teams – men’s & women’s swimming/diving and men’s and women’s soccer – had the opportunity to travel overseas.

The Flying Dutchmen will be seeking to maintain a tradition of excellence with a team that includes eight returning letterwinners from an 08-09 squad that finished second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), competed in the NCAA Division III tournament and posted a 21-8 season record.

Coach Glenn Van Wieren, who begins his 33rd year at the helm of the Flying Dutchmen, has a team that includes three freshman prospects, four sophomores, five juniors and two seniors. Van Wieren enters the season the sixth winningest active Division III coach with 639 victories and a 75% winning percentage.

Tri-captains of the team will be junior forward Will Bowser of Midland (HH Dow HS), junior guard Peter Bunn of Lansing (Lansing Christian HS), and senior forward Chris Nelis of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS). Bunn was named to the All-MIAA second team in 08-09.

Other returning letterwinners include senior guard Scott Jungling of Zee-land (Zeeland West HS), sophomore forward Nathaniel King of Sterling Heights (Henry Ford II HS), sophomore guard David Krombeen of Grand-ville (Grandville HS), junior guard Ty Tanis of Jenison (Jenison HS), and junior center Andy Venema of Hudsonville (Tri-Unity Christian HS).

Three players were members of the junior varsity squad a year ago -- junior center Adam Dickerson of Muskegon (Mona Shores HS), sophomore guard Logan Neil of Holland (West Ottawa HS), and sophomore guard Ryan Ross of St. Joseph (Michigan Lutheran HS).

Freshman prospects include center Josh Holwerda of Gallup, N.M., guard Jared Mysliweic of Wyoming (Tri-Unity Christian HS), and forward Nate Snuggerud of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS).

The Flying Dutchmen will play eight of their first 11 games at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse, including three tournaments -- the MIAA/CCIW Classic (Dec. 4-5), the Holland Sentinel Community Tournament (Dec. 11-12), and the Russ DeVette Holiday Classic (Dec. 29-30).

Two pre-season Division III polls included the Flying Dutchmen. DIII News placed Hope 11th while D3hoops.com put them in 23rd.

The 08-09 team led the nation's Division III teams in home attendance and in four seasons at the DeVos Fieldhouse are 62-4.

Coach Glenn Van WierenHope College basketball has thrived under the leadership of

Glenn Van Wieren (gvanwieren@hope) who has developed one of the nation's most highly respected NCAA Division III programs.

A product of the Hope basketball program himself, Van Wieren has guided the Flying Dutchmen to a record seven-teen Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championships and appearances in nineteen NCAA Division III post-season tournaments. The Flying Dutchmen have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen six times and to the Elite Eight four times, and the final four three times, most recently in 2008. Hope finished second in the nation in 1996 and 1998 and was third in 2008.

The 2008-09 Flying Dutchmen posted a 21-8 record to mark a school-record 29th consecutive winning campaign. Hope has won 25 or more games in a season six times under Van Wieren.

On January 12, 2008, Van Wieren became just the sixth coach in NCAA Division III men’s basketball history to achieve 600 victories. His 31-year record after an 80-71 win over Olivet was 600-201. His winning percentage (.749) at that time was the best in this elite coach-ing group. He also has reached 600 victories faster than any other Division III coach (801st game). The previous mark was by Glenn Robinson of Franklin & Marshall who won number 600 in his 821st game. His career record through the 2008-09 season is 639-211.

Van Wieren has coached two teams -- 84-85 and 94-95 -- through unbeaten regular season campaigns. He enters the 2009-10 season ranked the fourth winningest alltime Division III coach by victories (639) and the sixth winningest by percentage (.752).

In 2006 Van Wieren was honored by the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame with the organization's Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan in 2003.

The basketball court in the new DeVos Fieldhouse on Hope's campus is named in honor of coach Van Wieren, his coaching mentot Russ DeVette and their wives, Jacquelyn and Doris.

The publication Basketball Times has twice named Van Wieren its Division III national coach of the year, first in 1995 and again in 2008. He was also voted the 1995 Great Lakes Region Division III coach of the year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the 1995 Michigan college basketball coach-of-the-year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.

Van Wieren stands as one of the outstanding athletes in the history of Hope College. A 1964 graduate, he earned 11 letters during his four years at Hope and on four occasions was awarded all-conference honors by the MIAA. He was a four-year letterman in both basketball and baseball and a letterwinner in cross country three seasons. He ranks among the top scorers in Hope basketball history.

While at Hope, Van Wieren has also coached baseball, cross country and soccer. He is among the winningest coaches in America's olderst collegiate conference with a total of 18 MIAA champion-ships. In addition to 16 in basketball, he has coached conference champions in baseball and soccer.

He holds the academic rank of Professor of Kinesiology. Prior to joining the Hope faculty he taught and coached at Grand Haven (Mich.) High School. He holds the M.A. degree from Western Michigan University and the Ed.D. degree from Brigham Young University. He is active in Young Life and is a member of Christ Memorial Church in Holland. He is a member of the board of directors of the Basketball Coaches association of Michigan.

His wife Jacquelyn (Nyboer) is a 1967 Hope College graduate. The Van Wierens have four daughters -- Gretel, Heidi, Kuria and Rebekah, and seven grandchildren.

The Flying Dutchmen advanced to the NCAA Division III championships for the 20th time in school history by defeating rival Calvin in the conference tournament title game. Hope had finished second in the MIAA's regular-season standings. The team's 21-8 season record marked a school-record 29th consecu-tive winning campaign.

Senior forward Jesse Reimink was named a Division III All American and was voted the player of the year in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Sophomore Peter Bunn re-ceived All-MIAA second team honors.

Reimink led the MIAA in scoring (21.1 ppg) and became the first Hope player in more than a decade to average more than 20 points a game over the entire season (20.8 ppg). He was a three-

year starter and achieved a career distinction of scoring more than 1,000 points (1,321) and grabbing more than 500 rebounds (597). Hope during his career posted a 103-20 record. He was a second-generation Hope basketball player. His father Ron, a 1980 Hope graduate, also played for current coach Glenn Van Wieren. A geol-ogy major, Reimink was named to the ESPN The Magazine Aca-demic All-District first team.

For the seventh straight year, Hope led all NCAA Division III men's basketball programs in home attendance. It was the 11th time in school history that Hope has been the men's basketball at-tendance leader. The Flying Dutchmen posted a 14-2 home floor record. In four seasons at DeVos Fieldhouse, Hope has posted a 62-4 record.

The defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) champion Flying Dutch return a solid core of experienced players that is complemented by a promising group of players new to the varsity.

Coach Brian Morehouse begins his 14th season at the helm of a team that has won 20 or more games a school-record 11 straight years. The Flying Dutch posted a 28-2 record in 2008-09 and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III championships for the second year in-a-row. The team was eliminated from the tournament by the eventual national champion for the second straight season. Morehouse ranks among the winningest active NCAA Division III coaches with a 316-58 (84%) record. His teams the past five seasons posted a 138-12 mark.

This year's roster includes nine returning letterwinners. There are six fresh-man prospects joined by two sophomores, six juniors and two seniors.

Tri-captains of the team are senior guard Philana Greene of Grandville (Grandville HS), senior guard Jenny Cowen of Dexter (Dexter HS), and junior center Carrie Snikkers of Jenison (Unity Christian HS). All three play-ers have received All-MIAA first team honors during their career, Greene in 2007-08 and Cowen and Snikkers in 2008-09. Snikkers was also named a consensus Division III All-American a year ago.

Other returning letterwinners include junior guard Miranda DeKuiper of Ludington (Ludington HS), junior guard Abby Phillips of Wayland (Way-land HS), sophomore guard Allie Cerone of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton North HS), junior guard Lauren Geers of Scottville (Mason County Central HS), junior forward Erika Bruinsma of Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), and junior center Rachael Kutney of St. Clair Shores (Lake Shore HS). Sophomore guard Brooke Nienhuis of Zeeland (Zeeland West HS) was a member of the junior varsity a year ago.

The six freshman prospects include guard Olivia Allore of Muskegon (Mus-kegon Catholic Central HS), guard Liz Ellis of Grand Rapids (East Grand Rapids HS), forward Courtney Kust of Cincinnati, Ohio (Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy), center Ashley Bauman of Manistee (Manistee Catholic Central HS), forward Jillian Nichols of Brighton (Brighton HS), and center Meredith Kussmaul of Hartland (Hartland HS).

The Flying Dutch will play eight of their first nine games at home at the De-Vos Fieldhouse where they carry a 49- game home court winning streak.

Coach Brian Morehouse In 13 seasons under coach Brian Morehouse ([email protected]) the Hope Flying Dutch have won 20-or-more games eleven consecutive seasons, claimed eight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) titles, made nine trips to the NCAA tournament, including five Sweet Sixteen appearances, and won the Division III national championship in 2006. The 2008-09 Flying Dutch posted a 28-2 record.

In 13 seasons under Morehouse the Flying Dutch are 316-58 (84%). CoachMorehouse was chosen the 2005-06 Division III national coach of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBC) and the publication DIII News. The Detroit Free Press included coach Morehouse among the state's top sports figures in 2006 and amongthe candidates for the newspaper's annual "Michigan's Best" honor roll.

Three times in his career, (2001-02, 2002-03 and 2008-09), he has been voted the Regional Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). He has twice (2001-02 and 2007-08) been named the Michigan Collegiate women's bas-ketball coach of the year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. He was named the Division III Coach of the Month for December, 2002 by the publication D3News.

He enters the 2009-10 season ranked third among active NCAA Division III coaches by winning percentage (.844).

A 1991 Hope graduate who serves as director of the college's Dow Physical Education and Health Center and DeVos Fieldhouse, Morehouse is familiar with the Hope basketball scene havingserved in the men’s program for a number of years. He was the men’s junior varsity coach for two years, compiling a record of 30-9. He was a student assistant coach through his undergraduate years.

He graduated with honors from Hope with a major in business administration and minors in history, psychology and sociology and earned a teaching certificate for secondary education.

Morehouse's basketball roots run deep. His father, Dean, was the boy's basketball coach at Fremont (Mich.) High School. He joined son Brian as an assistant coach in 2000-01. Brian and Dean were honored as "Hometown Heroes" during the 2006 National Baby Food Festival in Fremont.

He contributed a chapter to the book, "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inside Basketball," chronicling an experience from the 2006 national championship run (February, 2009).

In February, 2009, he was featured in a major article in the Detroit News.

His wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Hain, a 1993 Hope graduate, played in the college’s basketball program for two years. The Morehouses have two daughters, Megan and Emma.

The Morehouses are members of Calvary Reformed Church in Holland. He is involved with the Holland Area Hospice and is a member of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

The Flying Dutch repeated as conference champions, posted a 28-2 record and advanced to the elite eight of the NCAA Divi-sion III tournament, where for the second straight year Hope was eliminated by the eventual undefeated national champion. The Flying Dutch extended their home-floor winning streak to 49-in-a-row. Hope was host to the final four of the NCAA women's bas-ketball championships for the second consecutive year.

Sophomore center Carrie Snikkers was named a consensus Division III All-American. She was voted to the 10-member State Farm Division III All-American team by the National Association of Women's Basketball Coaches and was honored by two Division III groups, D3hoops.com (fourth team) and DIIInews (third team). She was also voted the player of the year in the Michigan Inter-collegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Junior Jenny Cowen was named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Philana Greene and senior Courtney Knox received All-MIAA second team honors.

The Flying Dutch led the nation in average home attendance among all NCAA Division III programs. It marked the second time since moving to DeVos Fieldhouse four years ago that the Flying Dutch have led the nation's 420 Division III women's basketball programs in home attendance. The were 17-0 on their home court. Hope's four-season record at DeVos Fieldhouse is 60-1. In 13 sea-sons under coach Brian Morehouse the Flying Dutch are 173-20 (.896) on their home floor.

Coach Morehouse was named the regional coach of the year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for the third time in his 13-year career.

The Flying Dutch received the 2008-09 GPA Team Award from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). The award is presented to conference teams that achieve a 3.300 or better grade point average for an entire academic year. The Flying Dutch were also among 25 Division III teams honored nationally for academics.

2009-10 Schedule

Season OutlookThe Flying Dutchmen return a nucleus of veterans who will be seeking to repeat as champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association for a third consecutive year and to be competitive on a national level.

Hope swimming and diving is directed by John Patnott who launched it as an intercollegiate program in 1978. Since its founding the Flying Dutchmen have finished first or second every season in the MIAA and scored points at the NCAA Division III championships every year except one and that was back in 1988. The Flying Dutchmen have won the MIAA championship 11 times in school history.

This year's pre-season roster includes 23 returning letterwinners comprised of 11 sophomores, three juniors and nine seniors. The team also did well at recruiting with nine freshman propsects.

Senior tri-captains of the team include Phil Heyboer of Zeeland, Mich. (Holland Christian HS), Ryan Nelis of Holland, Mich. (West Ottawa HS), and Matt Ray of Holland, Mich. (Holland HS).

Five returning swimmers competed at nationals last year. Senior Ryan Nelis was 14th in the 100-yard butterfly and 15th in the 200-yard butterfly, senior Mitch Ruch of Zeeland, Mich. (Zeeland West HS), was 10th in the 200-yard backstroke, and senior Phil Heyboer was 12th in the 400-yard individual medley. Senior Mitch Ruch of Zeeland, Mich. (Zeeland West HS) and senior Aaron Welsch of Saint Peters, Mo. (Fort Zumwalt South HS) were members of relay teams that finish 11th in the 200-yard freestyle, 12th in the 400-yard freestyle relay; and 12th in the medley relay.

Five returning swimmers were All-MIAA honorees last year -- Heyboer, Nelis, Ruch. Welsch and sophomore Jeff Shade of Davison (Davison HS). Returning defending MIAA champions include Heyboer in the 400-yard individual medley , Ray Nelis in the 100-yard and 200 yard butterfly and Jeff Shade in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Nelis, who holds the MIAA record in both the 100 and 200 butterfly will be bidding for a fourth consecutive MIAA title in the 200 fly. Heyboer, the league record holder in the 400 individual medley, will also be bidding for a fourth straight championship.

Seven Hope records are held by current team members -- Jeff Shade in the 1,000-yard and 1,650-yard freestyles, Mitch Ruch in the 200-yard backstroke, Jeff Heyboer in 400-yard IM, and Ryan Nelis in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard IM.

The assault on the Hope record book was unprecedented for a single season by the MIAA-champion Flying Dutchmen. The sea-son's accomplishments included 11 school and two MIAA records, five MIAA gold-medal performances, and nine honorable mention All-America places at the NCAA Division III championships.

The championship was the 11th under coach John Patnott who since 1980 has guided teams to 30 conference titles (19 in women's swimming and 11 in men's swimming). He ranks second among the winningest MIAA coaches behind only Kalamazoo College tennis coach George Acker who had 35 championships.

Eight swimmers were named to the all-MIAA team. Three swimmers were honored for a third year: junior Phil Heyboer of Zeeland, Mich.; junior Ryan Nelis of Holland, Mich.; junior and junior Matt Rose of Grandville, Mich. Honored for a second time were senior Ryan Vogelzang of Holland, Mich., and junior Mitch Ruch of Zeeland, Mich. First-time honorees included freshman Jeff Shade of Davison, Mich.; freshman Matthew Gregory of St. Joseph, Mich.; and junior Aaron Welsch of St. Peters, Mo.

The Flying Dutchmen were presented the Academic All-American Team Award for 2008-09 from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Five swimmers were named Scholar All-Americans -- Matthew Gregory, Phil Heyboer, Ryan Nelis, Matt Rose and Jeff Shade.
