    2011-12 Mens BasketBall schedule

Experienced frontcourt returns for UNCBy Kevin Minogue

    Senior Writer

For a team many have dubbedthe unquestioned favorite to cutdown the nets in New Orleans this

April, the North Carolina mensbasketball team sure has had toproduce a bevy of answers duringthe preseason media frenzy.

Many folks have wonderedabout Harrison Barnes offensiveefficiency. Others have ques-tioned how the Tar Heels plan tothreaten from beyond the 3-pointarc with Leslie McDonald side-lined for the forseeable future.Still more have expressed doubtsabout Kendall Marshalls abilityto withstand an entire season asUNCs only experienced pointguard.

But few, if any, have had muchto ask of the Tar Heels biggestmen. And after the fashion in

which John Henson and TylerZeller finished last season, itseems there is little doubt as to

what the pair can produce downlow in the 2011-12 campaign.

In the final half of the 2010-11season, Henson and Zeller pro-duced rebounds and points withalarming consistency. Duringthe course of the last 16 games,Henson recorded 10 or morerebounds 15 different times. Hisonly failing? A nine-board perfor-mance against Kentucky.

Zeller, meanwhile, led the TarHeels in scoring 15 times duringthe season two more times thanBarnes and poured in 10-plus

points in 32 of 37 contests.Defensively, the same held

true. Henson, the ACC DefensivePlayer of the Year, registered

blocks in all but five of UNCsgames, swatting five or more 11times. Despite this, UNCs ownpostgame defensive accoladesmore often went to Zeller.

Z is philosophically in theright spot all the time, coach Roy

Williams said.John may be completely out

of position, but still has the abil-ity to block the shot and abruptlychange the play.

Williams words cut to theheart of what has become aninteresting paradox for Henson.Though Zellers consistency is notsurprising given his fundamentalapproach and polished skill set,Henson produced at a steady clip

with a far less refined approach, using his athleticism to generatemuch of his offense.

But heading into t he 2011-12season, Henson would prefer todeliver in more traditional ways.

Offensively, you want to bea dependable player, and thats

what Im working on being for myteammates, Henson said.

I think if I get the ball downthere, I can do a little more than Icould do last year.

Even if Hensons developmentproves only a marginal improve-ment from a season ago, he,Zeller, do-it-all freshman JamesMichael McAdoo and shot-swatting rookie Desmond Hubertcomprise one of the top post con-

tingents in the country. Few aredebating that.

But together, the Tar Heels bigmen will help erase some of UNCsmajor question marks this season.

With defenses forced to sag onUNCs big men, Barnes should

find plenty of room to operateon the perimeter and in the highpost area, especially against zoneschemes. This should also freeup more open looks for ReggieBullock and P.J. Hairston, both of

    whom appeared capable of filling

it up from deep in a combined6-for-11 performance from threeagainst UNC-Pembroke. A reli-able post presence will also offerMarshall a safety valve to relievepressure in tight spots.

    And although not many have

been quizzing the Tar Heelsfrontcourt prior to the season, there will be plenty asked ofUNCs big men during it.

Marshall to lead from the pointBy Jonathan Jones

    Senior Writer

Roy Williams thought he wasset in his teams backcourt play inFebruary for at least another year.

He had a junior point guardwho played a small role in NorthCarolinas 2009 championshipand led the team through the

worst of times the fo llowingyear.

Williams also had a freshmanpoint guard who showed greatpromise off the bench and con-tributed to the Tar Heels in waysthe starter could not.

But after Larry Drew II leftUNC in the middle of the nighton Feb. 4, just a couple of weeksafter Williams demoted him tothe bench in favor of KendallMarshall, the Hall of Fame coach

was left to play the rest of theyear and the next season due tohow late in the recruiting seasonDrews departure came withonly one true point guard.

    The expectations of a third

national title in eight years weighheavily on all of the Tar Heels, buton none more than UNCs back-court and its leader, Marshall.

Im concerned about ourhealth, which means Im con-cerned about our depth, Williamssaid. Weve already lost (shootingguard) Leslie (McDonald). Butthe greatest challenge is develop-ing the top quality person to bethe point when Kendalls out ofthe game.

Weve got to have somegood backcourt play. Dexter(Strickland) has got to spendsome quality time at the point andI think he will and embrace that.

McDonald suffered an ACLinjury during a summer Pro-Amgame when routinely bringing the

ball up the court. The non-contact

injury puts him on the shelf untilat least January, and puts a strainat the shooting guard position,

    which is currently occupied byStrickland.

    The starting backcourt of

Marshall and Strickland willshuffle to put Strickland at the1-guard and Reggie Bullockat the 2-guard when Marshalltakes a breather. Bullock is alsocoming off an injury but will

be healthy by the start of theseason.

Williams intends to playBullock at the small forward posi-tion when Harrison Barnes is out,

which will also open the reserveshooting guard position for fresh-man P.J. Hairston. His range willdraw opposing defense out of themiddle and help the frontcourt

    be more formidable around thebasket.

But the undeniable leaderof the team is Marshall. Wheninserted into the starting lineuplast season, the production of

Barnes, a preseason favorite fornational player of the year, andothers increased dramatically.

He knows where everybodyssupposed to be and he knows

    where everybodys supposed to

go, forward John Henson said.He gets the ball to the rightpositions, and thats what a goodleader does.

In order to be effective though,Marshall knows hell have to takesome breaks during games. Andthats a foreign concept to thepoint guard.

Coming out of high school, Inever understood people askingto come out of games, Marshallsaid. But once I got to collegeI was definitely putting that fistup because the game is so muchfaster.

I do want to be on the court asmuch as possible, but at the sametime, I dont want to hurt myteam. So if that means me playing30-32 minutes instead of playing36-37 and being more efficient

in those 32 minutes, then Im allfor it.

Incoming class brings high talentBy Brandon Moree

    Assistant Sports Editor

Entering his ninth year ashead coach, Roy Williams hasadded two more McDonalds All-

    Americans to the North Carolinaroster.

Freshmen guard P.J. Hairstonand forward James MichaelMcAdoo are the 16th and 17thMcDonalds All-Americans that

Williams has recruited to ChapelHill, eight of which are on this

    years team.McAdoo didnt just participate

in the annual premier high schoolall-star showdown, he owned it.

McAdoo took home co-MVPhonors with 17 points, and inmuch the same way he won thesame honor at the Jordan BrandClassic with a double-double per-formance.

McAdoo, who stands 6-foot-9and weighs 220 pounds, becamethe youngest person to ever winthe USA Basketball Male Athleteof the Year award in 2009 afteraveraging almost 17 points pergame on the way to a gold medalin the FIBA Americas U16 cham-pionship.

Im expecting a lot from (thefreshman) just because theyre

very great players, senior TylerZeller said. James McAdoo andP.J. are fantastic players, and therest of them can come in andgive us some great minutes also.I think theyre going to be able tocome in right off the bat and giveus a great lift.

Hairston, a 6-foot-5 wing-man from Greensboro, split hishigh school career at Dudley andHargrave Military Academy inChatam, Va.

In his senior year at Hargrave,he averaged more than 25points, nine boards and nearlyfive assists. So f ar this year, hescaught the eye of some of theolder guys on the team.

We always thought he wouldbe good, but hes stretchingthe floor out a lot better than

we thought, Harrison Barnessaid. Hes making a lot of shots.Thatll help us a lot down theroad in terms of penetration.

In UNCs 100-58 exhibition win against UNC-Pembrokeon Oct. 28, Hairston lit up thecourt making six of eight3-pointers during his 16 minuteson the court.

Hairston finished the gamewith 17 points, just one fewerthan senior forward Tyler Zeller,

who led with 18.Joining Hairston and McAdoo

at the Jordan Brand Classic inCharlotte was new teammateJackson Simmons from SmokeyMountain High School in

Webster, N.C. Simmons raked in astate-record number of reboundsin high school while standing just6-foot-7.

Williams has been working toget his freshman adjusted to anew style of play.

Jackson is just like JamesMichael. His head is spinningright now because the guys are alot bigger, a lot faster, Williamssaid. For me it was a thrill to beable to give him a scholarship, and now to watch him develop isgoing to be fun.

Simmons, a member of theWest team in the N.C. East-WestAll-Star game, was the MVP ofthat game. On the East team wasStilman White, from HoggardHigh in Wilmington. White joinsthe Tar Heels as the shortestmember of this years recruitingclass at 6-feet.

    BasketBall schedule

UNC women rely on youthBy Leah Campbell

    Assistant Sports Editor

After North Carolinas 72-65Sweet 16 loss to Stanford lastMarch, the womens basketballteam was left with more than onegaping hole.

Forward Jessica Breland andguards Italee Lucas and CeteraDeGraffenreid all graduated afteran impressive senior campaign, and Breland and Lucas were cho-sen in the 2011 WNBA Draft.

Lucas led UNC in scoring lastseason with almost 600 points, and Breland was a close second.

The senior trio combined for1,310 points last year, and replacingthem wont be easy for coach SylviaHatchell. But she has confidence inthe abilities of her five brand newplayers.

The good thing is that all five ofthose players ended their seasonslast year with a win, so they all wonstate championships, Hatchellsaid. That mentality is big.

Its major When youvewon state championships, youhave the work ethic and you justexpect to win.

A key playmaker for the 2011squad will be 5-foot-10 freshmanguard Danielle Butts. With statechampionships in both basketballand the long jump under her belt,Butts has the ability to be a multi-facetted talent for UNC.

Danielle Butts is probablythe best all-around athlete that

weve had since Marion Jones,Hatchell said. We may play fourguards a lot of times becauseDanielle Butts is really good, and

were going to play her some atfour. Shes not that big, but shesextremely athletic. She can jumpout of the gym.

Playing power forward isnt inButts inventory just yet, but thathasnt stopped veteran teammatesfrom noticing her versatility, defen-sive ability and willingness to learn.

Shes undersized at the four,of course, but she can jump,

senior Shela White said. Andwe love that. I think her majorrole will become rebounding and

being a defensive player this yearfor us.

And while Hatchell hasnt offi-cially decided if Butts will also com-pete on the North Carolina trackteam like Jones did, shes positivethat Butts, along with her fellowfreshmen, will make statements onthe basketball court.

Other new faces for the TarHeels are forward Megan Bucklandand guards Brittany Rountree,

Whitney Adams and redshirt fresh-man Shannon Smith.

Buckland boasts six statechampionships and six all-confer-ence picks. Rountree, ranked theNo. 11 point guard and the No. 53overall player in the country byESPN, adds to the teams depthat the one. Shes also on the ACCsnewcomer watch list.

Brittany has really impressedme, White said. Shes comingalong great, (freshmen) have been

coming along great this offseason. The team might have been

picked for the middle of the ACCpack in the preseason polls, butthe Tar Heels dont seem to beinvesting too much in rankings

just yet.Weve got a really good group of

young kids, Hatchell said. Rightnow, were a team with sort ofuncertanties, but as those kids allget more experience ... the face anddynamics of our team can changea lot.

Despite the less-than-desirableranking, Hatchell knows the teamisnt in uncharted territory.

We can probably be like ourmen were a couple of years ago,

where you have a lot of young kidsand all that stuff, she said. Youthink, two years ago they didnteven make the NCAA tournament, and now this year everybodys gotthem No. 1 in the country.

UNC could surprise doubtersBy Michael LanannaAssistant Sports Editor

Despite hosting a playoff-caliberteam last season, Carmichael Arena

wasnt quite as populated as SylviaHatchell had hoped it would be.

So this season, the NorthCarolina womens basketballcoach may take matters into herown hands.

Im going to see if (my car deal-er) will let me wrap my dealer car,Hatchell said. And Im going to doa Carolina womens basketball sea-son ticket thing And Im going

to drive it around Chapel Hill. With the Tar Heels projected tofinish sixth in the ACC, this yearsteam could be a tougher sell thanusual.

But Hatchell isnt buying intothe preseason talk just yet.

I think were going to betterthan people think were going to

be, Hatchell said. In fact, I knowwere going to be better than peo-ple think were going to be.

For the coachs prediction tohold true, though, the team willhave to adjust to a new lineupconfiguration, as not a singleplayer who started last seasonsopener will be taking the courtcome Nov. 12.

Senior forward Jessica Brelandand guards Italee Lucas andCetera DeGraffenreid have allgraduated, leaving imposinggaps in both the frontcourt and

    backcourt. Combined, the trio

accounted for 45 percent of theteams scoring offense last season.

To worsen matters, UNC willalso be without a pregnant WaltieaRolle until at least Dec. 17, and

junior guard Tierra Ruffin-Prattwill likely miss just as much timeafter undergoing surgery on herright shoulder in July.

Hatchell said either or bothplayers could be redshirted, and

with both projected to be startersthis year, their absence will cer-tainly be felt by their teammates.

Theyre two essential playersto our team, senior guard Shela

White said. They both startedmultiple times last year and, depending on how they comealong, will determine a lot for us.

White will be stepping intothe void left by Lucas andDeGraffenreid in the backcourt, and the senior said shes been

working all summer on preparingherself for the new role.

Already, White has made astrong impression on strength andtraining coach Jason Beaulieu.

Hes actually wanting totake Shela White to the 2012Olympics in her weight classin power lifting, Hatchell said.Pound for pound, he says, Ill

win a medal with her. He saysshes stronger than any of ourfootball players.

That kind of athleticism appearsto run rampant on the roster.

Hatchell said shes beenimpressed with the fitter, slim-

mer Chay Shegogs mobility upand down the court, and shenoted that 6-foot-1 forward LauraBroomfield has been dunking inpractice.

Both of those seniors will likelysee sizable time in the frontcourtthis season.

I think our inside play is goingto be really strong this year, said

junior Krista Gross, who willlikely grab a starting guard posi-tion. Weve got Chay Shegog

whos been working really hardand Laura Broomfield is one ofour best athletes but were stillgoing to have to be Carolina fast.

Frontcourt players are a minor-ity on this years team, though, and with a guard-heavy and tal-ent-heavy recruiting class comingin, Hatchell said she wouldnt shyaway from playing four guards onthe court.

I like being able to have allthose kids out there then

you dont know what to expect,Hatchell said.

Even coach Hatchells notgoing to know what to expectsometimes.

As freshmen last season,Harrison Barnes and Travis McKieplayed pivotal roles on North

Carolina and Wake Forest respec-tively, earning ACC All-Freshmenteam honors.

But for the Tar Heels andDemon Deacons, thats where thesimilarities end.

The Tar Heels (29-8, 14-2 ACC)won the regular-season ACCchampionship and made a deeprun in the NCAA tournament,

while McKies Demon Deacons(8-24, 1-15) struggled under first-

year head coach Jeff Bzdelik.Led by McKie and junior guard

C.J. Harris, Wake Forest willhost UNC on Jan. 31 and look toavenge last years 78-64 loss inChapel Hill.

In that game, McKie andHarris were a combined four of23 from the field. This season, theyll need to improve their

shooting performance for theDemon Deacons who arepicked 11th in the ACC preasea-son poll to have hope o f pullingoff an upset.

The leadership is coming fromme and Travis. As a junior, I feellike thats my role, Harris said. And Travis, all the guys respecthim from his play last year andleading by example.

One of the major areas WakeForest will look to improve uponis rebounding. In the loss to UNC,the Demon Deacons were out-rebounded 50-35.

That game was no anomaly. On the season, the Demon

Deacons pulled down an averageof 32.5 boards per game com-pared to 37.8 for their opponents.

    Our emphasis this year is

defensive rebounding. Through thefirst half of practice, thats all were

working on, Harris said. That wasthe big problem last year, and if

we can correct that, well have a lotmore wins than last year.

McKie said the Demon Deaconsbelieve this years team is funda-mentally different and will attemptto put last season behind them.

Last year we werent a togeth-er team, McKie said. But I thinknow, everybody knows what toexpect from each otherand Ithink it will show in the long run.

Forward Harrison Barnes goes up for a dunk in a game against Wake Forest on Feb. 15. B arnes went 7-for-20 and scored 17 points in the matchup.

And Wake Forest isnt intimidat-ed by the hype surrounding UNC.

I dont care if were playingagainst the Miami Heat or any-

body, McKie said. Were going tocompete and try to win as manygames as possible.

Although Barnes is not LeBronJames and Marshall is not Dwyane

Wade, the Demon Deacons willlikely have to play one of their bestgames to beat UNC.

Wake Forest will be withoutlast years starting small forward,

Ari Stewart, and its second-leading scorer from a year ago,J.T. Terrell, who both transferredto the University of Southern

    California.Despite his teams imperfec-

tions, Bzdelik is convinced thatthe Demon Deacons will be animproved squad.

I love this group, Bzdelik said.Theyre giving me, and theyregiving each other most impor-tantly, everything theyve got.

On January 31, the Tar Heelswill see how much better theyreally are.

Eagles face tall taskwith young team

    By David AdlerStaff Writer

North Carolina and BostonCollege, the Tar Heels first ACCopponent this season, look likepolar opposite squads cominginto the 2011-12 season.

The Tar Heels are one of theearly favorites to win the nationalchampionship and were predictedto win the ACC in the 2011 pre-season media poll.

Boston College is picked to fin-ish last.

UNC could have had three play-ers picked in the 2011 NBA draft,

but instead all three decided tostay in school.

Reggie Jackson, the Eaglesbest player a year ago, left BostonCollege and came out for the drafta year early.

    North Carolinas rotation is

based around a stable core ofreturning talent. The Tar Heelsalso have five incoming recruits,

but none are likely to be start-ers, at least not early on in theseason.

The Eagles have nine freshmenon their roster, and they are allfighting for playing time.

It makes things a lot moreinteresting, freshman DennisClifford said. In practice every-thing is a lot more competitive, everything is pretty much up forgrabs. Guys are really compet-

ing more than a normal teamwould.

Clifford, a 7-foot center, saidthe competition is healthy.

When guys are getting aftereach other trying to get a positionand minutes, it really makes you

work hard every play, Clifford said. But freshman guard Patrick

Heckmann sounded less certainabout the chemistry of a youngteam just starting to play together.

Weve been focusing on gettingto know each other, Heckmannsaid. Weve been playing a lot toget used to the system and get usedto the guys, know what everyonecan do, at least get to a level where

we know each other.Coach Steve Donahue said

that even with all the newcomers,Boston College simply doesnthave the recruiting clout thathelps schools with bigger bas-

    ketball programs land top-notchtalent.

I cant bang heads. Were notgoing to win those (recruiting)

wars, Donahue said. Im going totry to find the best players we canlegitimately get in recruiting.

Of course, preseason predic-tions dont necessarily meanmuch, and the Eagles might turnout better than they seem onpaper. But when they come toChapel Hill on Jan. 7, they willlikely be heavy underdogs.

The game could be the first real

test for Boston College, most ofwhose non-conference opponentsare New England schools not

known for their basketball teams. The Tar Heels, on the other hand,

will already have played contend-ers Michigan State, Wisconsin,Kentucky and Texas.

The hard part is, were going tohave failures, Donahue said. Weregoing to have moments where thesekids are going to realize that this isa very high level of basketball andthey are going to be way younger,

    way less experienced.

    Georgia Tech looks to

    rebuild under GregoryBy Ryan Davis

    Staff Writer

Theres no doubt that GeorgiaTech is a team in transition.

The teams best scorer, rebound-er and passer, Iman Shumpert, leftthe team for the NBA.

Its head coach for the pastdecade, Paul Hewitt, was fired aftersuffering his third losing seasonin four years and it wont playany true home games this season

because Alexander MemorialColiseum is being traded in for theunder-construction McCamishPavilion.

Although Georgia Tech isundergoing a much-needed over-

haul of its basketball program, new head coach Brian Gregoryis saying all the right things thusfar. At ACC Operation Basketball,Gregory talked about balancinghis hopes for this years team withlaying the groundwork for futuresuccess.

We better have a team thatplays their tail off and our guys havedone a great job of embracing that,Gregory said. Theyve done every-thing that I could ask of them up tothis point. You want to have success

with that this year but you want tolay the foundation as this programadvances.

For Gregorys Georgia Techteam to be successful theyll haveto buy into the scrappy, no-non-sense style of basketball hes beenpreaching.

Our offense is based on five guyssharing the ball, working as one, creating easy plays for each other,Gregory said. Defensively, five guysare covering the ball. Five guys arerebounding. Everythings based onfive guys working as one.

Fans have been largely disap-pointed with the teams play inrecent years, and Gregorys high-pressure defense and up-tempooffense may be just the cure the

Yellow Jackets need.Junior guard Glen Rice Jr.

appears primed for a breakoutseason and should be the man onthis Yellow Jackets squad. Rice ledthe team in 3-point shooting and

was second, behind Shumpert, inpoints, rebounds, assists and steals.

He worked really hard thisoffseason to get where he should

be, point guard Mfon Udofia said.I feel like Glen Rice is a big part ofour team, is probably going to beour leading scorer. He likes to getafter it on the offensive and defen-sive ends of the floor.

A heartbreaking overtime lossis one thing. But when the losscomes in the NCAA tournament

with the game-winner drop-ping through the net as hopes toadvance expires, the loss isnt justheartbreaking.

Its gut-wrenching.Last year, Florida States season

ended at the hands of Cinderellateam Virginia Commonwealth inthe Sweet Sixteen.

Its just been kind of hauntingin the offseason, senior BernardJames said. Thats been a hugemotivation. I think about thatgame every day.

With the help of players likefirst-round NBA draft pick ChrisSingleton and point guard DerwinKitchen, Florida State compiled a23-11 record last season, finishingthird in the final ACC standings.

Though replacing Singletonand Kitchen will be no easy feat, the squad returns three starters, including James, sophomore Okaro

White and junior Michael Snaer.Poised to fill the gap left on the

court by Singleton, James is per-haps more prepared than most totake on the tall task.

His journey to Florida Stateis unconventional, as he servedsix years in the United States

Air Force after high school fol-lowed by playing two seasons atTallahassee Community College.

I had known people who haddropped out, and I saw what t hey

were doing with their lives andI didnt want to t ake that path,James said. I felt like the military

was really my last chance to sal-vage everything and get back ontrack. So when I got the opportu-nity, I jumped on it.

Florida State is not lacking inveteran talent. In addition to thenine returning juniors and seniorson the roster, Florida State also

    welcomes graduate student JeffPeterson.

Peterson is a product of pro-grams at both the Universityof Iowa and the University of

    Arkansas, making him the first

student-athlete to play basketballin the ACC, Big Ten and SEC.

With only one year of eligibility, the transfer is expected to make a

big impact in the point guard role. The Seminoles also enter this

season looking to lead the countrywith the lowest defensive field goalpercentage for a record-tying thirdconsecutive season.

And while defense hasnt beena problem for the Seminoles, coach Leonard Hamilton said thatthe teams defensive strength hasallowed time for its offense to grow.

We have not been tremen-dously skilled offensively, so wevegot a reputation of only concern-ing ourselves with the defense,Hamilton said. Were fortunate

we have a system that works on thedefensive end while were develop-ing out skills on the offensive end.

Being selected third in the pre-season is only a jumping off point. For the Seminoles, their end goalis to reach a level uncharted by

    basketball players wearing garnetand gold.

Coach really wants us to focus

on the game-by-game, Jamessaid. Because thats the only way

you get to the end, to the FinalFour, is to take every game likeits your last game and you haveto win it.

    BARNESback for more

    By Mark Thompson

    SeniorWriter

The scene was like something fromHoosiers. Its not a perfect comparison, butit will do.

Harrison Barnes filled the role of JimmyChitwood, not because he took a wh ile tostart playing, although that isnt too big ofa stretch. More than anything, Barnes, likeChitwood, was simply the best player on thefloor that game.

And it wasnt even close. The scene? North Carolinas 92-87 over-

time win against Clemson in the ACC tour-nament last season, when Barnes put to bedhis inconsistent freshmen season with hislargest scoring outburst.

I saw it coming in practice, it just didnttransfer over in games as quickly as he

wanted it to or as quickly as me and the restof the coaches and his teammates wanted,UNC mens basketball coach Roy Williamssaid.

Hes an extremely focused young man.I really believe hes prepared himself in thespring and summer to have a great, great

year.In that game, Barnes didnt shoot

much more than he had in other conteststhat year. The difference was he finished12-for-17 from the field, 6-for-8 from thethree point line, and made 10-of-11 freethrows.

He just shot better. And for Barnes to continue that success

and reach the goals that North Carolina has,he knows hes going to have to turn in moregames just like that.

Hopefully we dont see that guy, Barnessaid, addressing his spotty shooting last sea-son. He missed a lot of shots.

That was especially true at the start of theseason when Barnes struggled most.

Last year was kind of the curtain wasdown and you were just supposed to walkout there and be Elvis, Barnes said.

But if eveyone could do it, then Elviswouldnt be the Kind of Rock and Roll.

During Barnes final 10 games of theseason, the 6-foot-8 wingman averaged21.5 points per game, shot 46.5 percentfrom the floor and 38.7 percent from longrange.

Those who spent time with him over thesummer expect that to carry over.

I think well see a lot more efficientHarrison Barnes, UNC point guard KendallMarshall said. Hes learned not to use as

many dribbles, as much energy, tryingto create a shot, and as well as a more

aggressive Harrison. But its easy to forget amid the

preseason rankings and hype thatthis team could have easily looked dif-ferent had Barnes and other players notreturned for this season.

Barnes was a projected lottery pickand maybe a top five pick in the 2011NBA draft, while teammates JohnHenson and Tyler Zeller couldhave easily gone in the firstround.

Barnes, who announced thathe would be returning for hissophomore season on April18, was the last to make hisdecision.

It says a lot about theyoung man, and whathe was looking for inhis college education,

Williams said. It says alot about his teammatesand that he really enjoyedcollege basketball.

Every team that Ive ever hadthis discussion with, I told them Do what

you want to do. Tyler Hansbrough keptcoming back because he wanted to dothat.

There are a lot of similarities betweenHansbroughs 2009 NCAA championshipteam and this years squad.

Both Tar Heel teams fell short the previ-ous year in the later stages of the NCAAtournament. Barnes said the team didntreally realize how close it was last yearuntil after it lost in the Elite Eight toKentucky.

Just kind of sitting there for a while

thinking, Wow look how far we went, howclose we were. It killed you for a while, hesaid.

With its entire starting lineup returning,UNC is ranked the No. 1 team this pre-season, just like the 2009 team started itsseason on top of the nation.

But perhaps no comparison is moreintriguing than the one between Barnesand Hansbrough. Theyre two very differentplayers. One was psycho, the other psycho-analytic.

At their core, however, the two are verysimilar.

Hansbrough saw the game one way.It was, Give me the ball, Im putting it in

that basket, Williams said.Barnes isnt so different. The boy scores the ball, Williams said.

Thats the biggest talent that he has.

Hurricanes adjust to new coaching styleBy Henry Gargan

    Staff Writer

North Carolina hasnt forgottenits last encounter with Miami.

A buzzer-beating Tyler Zellerlayup was all that prevented anearly UNC exit from the ACC tour-nament at the hands of a team thathas perennially occupied the con-ferences bottom tier.

This season, though, Miamireturns with a new coach, last sea-sons leading scorers and a freshattitude.

Yet the Miami basketball pro-gram still remains under the radar.

The fans that flock to see theHurricanes compete on the grid-iron have always been largelyabsent from the schools basketballarena. Last season, the averagehome game attracted slightly morethan half the bodies required to fillthe schools 8,000 arena.

To make matters worse, allega-tions have surfaced that formercoach Frank Haith knew about a$10,000 donation from a boosterto help recruit DeQuan Jones.

Haith left the Hurricanes lastspring after the teams NIT quarter-final loss to Alabama to coach at theUniversity of Missouri. His sevenseasons at Miami included just onetrip to the NCAA tournament and amiddling 43-69 record in the ACC.

Now, former George Masoncoach Jim Larranaga leads Miami, having proven himself capable ofleading a small-time program to

big-time success. Under Larranaga,George Mason earned five NCAA

berths and one trip to the FinalFour in 2006.

Coach Larranaga is the leader, junior guard Durand Scott said. Ifyou follow the leader, how can yougo wrong if hes been where you

want to go?Following the leader, especially

for Scott, will mean a greater focuson discipline. Larranaga describedan interaction in which he demand-ed that Scott ride the exercise biketo remind him to come preparedfor practice. Scott was incredulous.

Its not about the big things, its about doing all the little things

well, Larranaga said. If we payspecial attention to all the littledetails, well be successful. If weignore all the little things, wellnever get to the big things.

Top rebounder Reggie Johnsonsrecovering meniscus has sidelinedhim until mid-season, but MalcolmGrant, Miamis top returning scor-er, said he believes that his teams

backcourt will make a definiteimpact despite his absence.

UNC found itself at the otherend of this tactic last season, asMiami forced 20 UNC turnovers inthe ACC Tournament matchup.

As team leaders, Grant and Scottwill attempt to continue to findways to do the little things right asMiami enters the Larranaga era.

This is my last year, Grant said.

Despite the loss of last yearsleading scorers Malcolm Delaneyand Jeff Allen, Virginia Tech juniorpoint guard Erick Green expects

better basketball from the Hokies, the kind that can propel VirginiaTech to its first NCAA tournamentsince 2007.

In three of the last four seasons, the Hokies have reached 20 wins

only to be denied admission to theBig Dance.

Virginia Tech enters the 2011season ranked sixth in the ACC,two spots below where they fin-ished 2010, but with two starters

back and the nations 13th bestrecruiting class, Green thinks theHokies have as strong a shot asever to make it to the postseason.

People say without Jeff andMalcolm were not going to be asgood of a team, Green said. Ithink honestly well be better. We

wont rely on one or two people toscore the ball.

Forty-six percent of the Hokiesscoring came from Delaney and

    Allen last season.Freshman Dorian Finney-Smith

is the most highly touted newcomerfor the Hokies. He was ranked

eighth among all small forwards inthe recruiting class of 2011.

Rounding out the recruit-ing class is point guard MarquisRankin, power forward C.J.Barksdale and shooting guardRobert Brown, who all playedalongside UNC freshman P.J.Hairston at Hargrave Military

    Academy.While injuries have plagued the

Hokies over the past few seasons, the Hokies will benefit from theleadership of medical-redshirtsenior Dorenzo Hudson after footsurgery sidelined him for most oflast season.

Hudson holds himself respon-sible for pushing younger playerson every play because he has seenthe slim margins by which VirginiaTech has missed the NCAA tourna-

    ment before.(Coach Seth Greenberg) wants

you to play as hard as you can everypossession, Hudson said. We needto try to instill in the young guys

because the game could come downto the last shot or the last rebound.

Redshirt sophomore CadarianRaines is coming off a season-ending injury as well, but Hudsonthinks that Raines may be the low-post player the Hokies need.

We need somebody to be a pres-ence in the paint, to block shots andstep up and take charges, and hecould be that, Hudson said.

The Hokies will also rely uponthe experience of senior forward

Victor Davila, who has morecareer starts than any player inthe ACC, to fill the statistical voidleft by Allen, the ACCs third-best

rebounder last season. He cant play like he did against

Duke one night, and then becomeHoudini the next night and disap-pear, Greenberg said.

Without a doubt Green will bethe leader of this team as it shuffleslineups throughout the season tofind the right mix of youth andexperience on the court.

Last season, Green surprisedthe field as the ACCs most statisti-cally-improved player, but withoutDelaney to distract opponents,Greenberg expects more of a bur-den to fall on Green.

Erick Green is going from basi-cally being Robin to being Batman,Greenberg said. Hes going to drawthe opponents best defender now -thats a new role.

Virginia had not been pickedto finish fourth or better in the

ACC since the 2001-2002 season, when the conference had nine

teams. But this year, the No. 4

Cavaliers are pleased with wherethey sit.

We know its going to be astruggle and a battle, but the leagueis definitely open for anybody, senior guard Sammy Zeglinski said.We have a lot of experience. Weknow what to expect.

The Cavaliers will play UNCtwice during a two-week spanon Feb. 11 and 25. The Tar Heels

won the teams only meeting lastyear in Charlottesville 62-56 aftertrailing by 11 in the second half.

UNC didnt make a field goalfor almost nine minutes, spanningfrom the final minutes of the firsthalf to five minutes into the second.

Virginia suffered similar shoot-ing woes and scored only 19 points

in the second half. K.T. Harrell ledthe Cavaliers with 13 points.

Virginias senior forward MikeScott, who missed the UNC gamelast season after suffering an ankleinjury in December, tied DukesSeth Curry for fifth for the 2011-2012 Preseason All-ACC team.

Scott averaged a double-doubleand was the Cavaliers leadingscorer in the 2011-12 campaign

before he missed the rest of theseason due to injury.

The NCAA granted Scott a med-ical redshirt that will allow him toplay this season. Scott said he lost20 pounds in the offseason to pre-pare for the 2011-12 campaign.

Hes definitely shown what hecan do early on and just havinghis work ethic come back in thegame kind of feeds on the rest of

the team, Zeglinski said. His knowledge of the game and

his talent will definitely boost us.Along with the return of Scott,

Virginia returns four starters inZeglinski, Joe Harris, Jontel Evansand Assane Sene. The Cavaliers

    Virginia Tech

    hopes forNCAA return

will welcome the arrival of fresh-men Malcolm Brogdon, PaulJesperson and Darion Atkins.

Virginia has improved sincehead coach Tony Bennett washired in 2009. The Cavaliers fin-ished 4-12 in the ACC in Bennettsfirst season but were 7-9 last year.

Well never probably be onequal or better footing with someteams in our league, but thatsOK, Bennett said. Its so muchabout having enough talent andthen pulling it all together andplaying collectively.

The Cavaliers were a potentialNCAA tournament team until aloss to Miami in the ACC tourna-ment last year. Virginia led by 10

with less than a minute left in thesecond half but lost in overtime.

I see a team that definitely hasthe potential to make the tourna-ment, Zeglinski said. At the sametime, we have a lot of work to do.

Scott and teammate Evanspromised to grow out their hairuntil Virginia reaches the NCAAtournament.

If our hair is a distraction, then

we have more problems, Scott said.I really dont focus on the ACCtournament or NCAA tournament.I just worry about the process.

After winning 22 games last sea-son in coach Brad Brownells first

year, Clemson has found an identityit hopes to extend this season.

The Tigers led the ACC lastseason in scoring defense, allow-ing just 61.4 points per game.

With three returning startersand a crop of defensive-mindedfreshmen, Clemson looks to postsimilar numbers in this yearscampaign.

Last year we held guys tosomething like 61 points, so hell,

why not try to beat that, seniorguard Andre Young said.

Clemson is predicted to finishseventh in the ACC in its 100thseason of basketball.

But after losing their two lead-ing scorers, the Tigers will need to

be a force defensively to make itsfifth straight NCAA tournament.

Young, who posted 11.1 pointsper game in 2010-11, is the onlyreturner who averaged double fig-ures last season.

We were in games last yearbecause of how we played defen-sively, senior Tanner Smith said. Were not one of those teams inthis league with a bunch of fire-power.

Young and Smith make up whatwill be an experienced backcourt.

Smith averaged just 7.8 pointsa game last year but is one of theteams top defenders, while Young

shot 39.6 percent from three-pointrange and is seventh all-time inClemson history in three-pointers.

Andre is playing at a highlevel, Brownell said. He handlesthe ball better, he shoots the ballincredibly well Andre trulyloves (the game), thats how a guy

whos five-foot-nine has been avery good player at this level.

A new era has dawned for theNorth Carolina State basketballprogram, and with it comes newexpectations for a fan base that isdesperate for something to cheerabout.

N.C. State fans are hoping thata fresh face will be the cure for a

basketball program whose onceproud history seems like a distantmemory.

That fresh face belongs toformer Alabama coach MarkGottfried. Gottfried coachedthe Crimson Tide for 10 years

before resigning in the middleof the 2009 season. Gottfriedled Alabama to a 210-132 recordduring his tenure and madefive straight NCAA tournamentappearances, including an EliteEight appearance in 2004.

Gottfried acknowledges thatmany Wolfpack supporters mighthave given up on previous headcoach Sidney Lowe, but he isready to move on.

I know that a lot of peoplehave probably lost faith in theprogram, thats why there was acoaching change, Gottfried said. But its our turn now and wegotta do the job.

Gottfrieds job was made alot easier when McDonalds All-

American C.J. Leslie decided toreturn for his sophomore season.

After averaging 11 points andseven rebounds a game for the

Wolfpack last season, Leslie willlook to build on a promisingfreshman campaign that ended

with a place on the ACC All-Rookie team.

(Leslie) is a terrific athlete speed, jumping ability, quickness,Gottfried said. We just have tokeep coaching him every day

because he has great potential. While Leslie may be the most

talented player on the Wolfpacksroster, he is not the most valu-able, according to Gottfried. Thatdistinction belongs to sophomorepoint guard Lorenzo Brown.

Because of the sudden departureof Ryan Harrow, who transferredto Kentucky, Brown will handlethe full-time point guard duties. Asa starter last year, Brown led theteam in assists, but he did so as theteams shooting guard.

Brown was initially recruitedto play shooting guard, but he willhave to adapt to his new role fastfor the Wolpack to succeed.

Last year I was kind of ashooting guard or whatever; Ireally wasnt comfortable at thatposition, Brown said. Im goingto be the main point guard this

year and Im excited.Aside from Leslie and Brown,

the only other returning starterfor the Wolfpack is junior guardScott Wood. Wood started everygame his first two seasons and

was the teams leading 3-pointshooter last season. He said thatone major difference between thetwo coaches is the fast pace at

which Gottfried wants his playersto operate.

The one focus is go 110 milesper hour but at the same time stayin control, Wood said. It startson the defensive end. Once we get

Bryan Narcisse, MiltonJennings and Devin Booker com-pose a frontcourt that lacks expe-rience but has plenty of talent.

Jennings arrived at Clemson asone of the programs highest-ratedrecruits of all time. After strug-gling his freshman season, heshowed flashes of All-ACC caliberpotential last year.

In total, Clemson returns justsix players and will lean heavilyon a six-man freshman class.

Going into an ACC arena andall those things my team this

year is going to be wide-eyed,Brownell said.

But the freshmen face an addi-tional task playing in a systemthat prioritizes defense.

Its a lot to throw at them, butthey have a good attitude about it,

Young said. I think that is someof my responsibility to really pullthose guys in, being on the courtand being able to help those guysand get them in the right spots.

Contact the Sports Editorat [email protected].

that stop, were going to be look-ing to get out o n the break.

Any time a new coach is intro-duced to a struggling program, optimism will be at its highest. For Gottfried and the Wolfpack, there is new hope that a return toprominence is on the horizon.

Duke enters this season rankedNo.6 even after losing more thanhalf of last years offensive pro-duction.

In order to maintain that top10 ranking, the Blue Devils willhave to integrate some playersinto new roles.

Even as Duke coach MikeKrzyzewski approaches therecord-breaking 903rd win, hefaces the tough task of replacingKyrie Irving, Nolan Smith andKyle Singler.

I think its an incredibly inter-esting year, and I still believe wecan be very good, Krzyzewski

said. We want to hopefully beable, be worthy enough to com-pete for a national championship,

but weve got a longer road to goto get there.

That longer road includes theprocess of breaking in two newstarters who will have to replacethe departed Singler, the fourthall-time leading scorer in Dukehistory, and Smith, ACC playerof the year and a consensus firstteam All-American in 2011.

As part of the reloading effort,Krzyzewski recruited highly tout-ed high school point guard AustinRivers to replace Smith, who ledthe team in assists last season

with 189. Rivers, son of NBA coachDoc Rivers, has already impressed

his teammates with his commit-ment to improving his game.

Austin works really hard.Thats a great trait that he has, returning starting forward RyanKelly said. We believe that bythe time games start rolling in,hes going to be a huge part of ourteam.

Duke isnt ranked sixth nation-ally for nothing.

Starters Kelly, Seth Curry andMason Plumlee and bench players

Andre Dawkins, Josh Hairstonand Miles Plumlee are all return-ing this season.

Curry and Dawkins will look tocontinue the Duke offensive tradi-tion of shooting well from 3-pointland. The duo co-led the Blue

Devils last season with 64 made3-pointers. Additionally, Curryand Dawkins finished second andthird on the team, respectively,in 3-point percentage last season

behind Irving.Another new addition to the

Blue Devils is the third Plumleebrother, Marshall, who adds anoth-er 6-foot-11 body to Dukes depth.

Its a lot of fun, especially offthe court because I get to hangout with my little brother again,Miles Plumlee said. I think it justfeels like home now.

Kelly posted a strong showingduring Dukes summer preseasontour of China. Kelly scored 20points in two of three gamesagainst the Chinese Olympic

Team and recorded a double-double in the other game.

I approached this summer asneeding to get better every dayto put myself in a position to beready on that first day of practiceto be a good player, Kelly said.

Krzyzewski said specific playerroles will continue to develop asthe season gets underway.

We have to maintain someflexibility in what were doingoffensively, Krzyzewski said. Wehave enough talent. Now, will they

believe in their talent? Will theydevelop their talent sufficiently totry to achieve those goals?

New coach Turgeon has big shoes to fillBy James Pike

    Staff Writer

Change has swept throughMaryland during the offseason, and the Terrapins will need toadapt in order to be successful inthe ACC.

New head coach Mark Turgeonis ready to facilitate that transi-tion.

Gary Williams, who led theteam to a national championshipin 2002 and an ACC Tournamenttitle in 2004, retired in May aftercoaching the Terrapins for 22

    years.Replacing Williams as head

coach is former Texas A&M headcoach Turgeon who inherits ateam that went 7-9 in conferenceplay last season and 19-14 overall.

On the court, senior guardSean Mosley will likely lead theteam and head up the frontcourt sefforts to fill the void left by for-mer Terrapin forward Jordan

    Williams.Williams, who averaged 32

minutes and 16.9 points for theteam last season, left Marylandearly and was drafted in the sec-ond round of the NBA Draft.

Turgeon thinks that Mosley isready to accept his new role.

Hes got a chance to be oneof the best Ive been around, hesaid. Hes got great leadershipskills. Hes a great kid. Hes a greatrole model. Hes been through

it all since hes been here, and Ithink he respects coaching.

Sophomores Terrell Stoglin andPeShon Howard will likely joinMosley in the starting five.

Mosley is pleased with histeammates performance andparticularly excited to see how theguards will play.

Our guard play is great, hesaid. Having somebody likeTerrell, hes quick. He knowshow to finish the basketball. Andcoach Turgeon is looking forwardto him and seeing the great thingsthat he can do.

While the Terrapins have theguards to compete in the ACC,there are still questions at center.

Dutch senior Berend Weijs isrelatively inexperienced, but hecan use his 6-foot-10 frame to

block shots and grab rebounds.Weijs is joined in the frontcourtby Ukrainian freshman AlexLen.

The 7-foot-1 shot-blockerstarted for the Ukrainian nationalteam at the 2010 Under-18European Championships, andhas the ability to match up wellagainst the likes of John Hensonand Tyler Zeller.

The Terrapins will likely startthree guards in their lineup, andthe team will rely heavily on Weijsand Len to cover the interior andgrab rebounds. How far Maryland

goes this season will be deter-mined by how quickly the front-court can adjust to ACC play.

Turgeon acknowledges that hehas a difficult challenge ahead ofhim but believes that his team hasthe ability to improve.

How quickly we can turn itaround in such a great league? Its going to be tough, he said. Its a league that has a lot of

young coaches that have a yearor two head start on me ...Hopefully in a short time we can

be a top team in the league andin the country.

Bullocks return will boost guard playBy Kelly Parsons

    Sports Editor

During the North Carolinamens basketball teams exhibi-tion win against UNC-Pembrokeon Oct. 28, sophomore guardReggie Bullock and four freshmensparked a 14-0 run to help thetrailing Tar Heels get back in thegame.

With 10 points in 22 minutesagainst the Braves, a polishedBullock looked at home on theDean Smith Center court.

But his return to the game t hatnight marked not just the begin-ning of UNCs next campaign, butalso the end of an agonizing roadto normalcy.

On Feb. 27, the No. 19 NorthCarolina mens basketball team

walked out of Smith Center withan 87-76 win against conferencefoe Maryland and a five-game

winning streak. But on that night, the Tar Heels

lost something far more important.Bullock tore the lateral menis-

cus in his left knee against the

    dth file/Wilson herlong

Sophomore guard Reggie Bullock makes contact as he drives for the bas-

ket. Bullock was sixth on the team in scoring last season before his injury.

Terrapins, and sat out for the restof the season after reconstructivesurgery.

But even before that game,Bullock struggled with pain in hisknee.

Everything was painful aboutit, Bullock said. I basically lostconfidence in my leg, like trusting

it-wise. I knew it was time for me toshut it down, so I just shut it down.

Coach Roy Williams said thetrainers were conservative withBullock, easing him back into

workouts slowly after he recov-ered from surgery.

But now that his faithfulreserve is back in action and ready

to contribute, Williams is lookingforward to seeing what Bullockcan do this season.

He went through the two con-ditioning tests, and did well in

both of those, so Im expecting bigthings, Williams said. I expecthim to make a higher percentageof those shots, and play betterdefense, and do some more things

with the ball.Bullock, the 2010 AP Player

of the Year in North Carolinaand McDonalds All-American,averaged 6.1 points per game lastseason and was second in scoringfrom the bench.

But this year, teammateKendall Marshall is expecting a

whole lot more.Reggie kind of reminds me

of Dwayne Wade, Marshall said.Dwayne Wade got hurt, peopleforgot all about him. People for-got how good he really is. I thinkthats one thing people are forget-ting about Reggie.

Hes very talented. Hes verylong, he can really shoot the

ball...I think youll see a smarter,

a lot faster, more athletic ReggieBullock this year.

Bullock said he feels back tonormal and is excited to show howhes improved in the offseason.

The sophomore guard knowshell likely be counted on for morethis season. But after persever-ing through the roadblocks hes

already faced, Bullocks not bat-ting an eye at the pressure.

I know my role will be a lotbigger this year, Bullock said.Im just ready to step up to thechallenge.
