Connecting to Country

Last week Mr Trindall and I were fortunate to be involved in three days of professional learning run by our local AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group). Connecting to Country is an opportunity to learn about the history of our local area, to learn about Gumbaynggirr culture, to talk with Elders as they share their wealth of knowledge and experiences, and to make connections with local community services and agencies that support our Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal families. I would like to extend my thanks to the facilitators of this fantastic learning opportunity. At NHPS, we work to ensure that Gumbaynggirr culture is embedded in our daily learning; we are fortunate to have Aunty Edrica visit weekly to teach language, we have a Student Aboriginal Leadership team working with Miss Edwards, our students are supporting competitors at the Elders Olympics this week, and our parent Advisory Group meets twice a term. Just this week our staff have begun wearing their new shirts (right) designed by former student and well-known local Gumbaynggirr artist, Keiana Bateman.

Mobile Devices at School As technology and mobile devices become an increasingly common part of our day to day life, I’d like to remind our families that our school has a policy outlining expectations about students bringing personal mobile devices to school. While students are school any contact from home should be made via the front office; there is no need for students to

have access to a personal mobile device

during class hours. All of our classrooms have phones installed and messages received through the front office are passed on immediately. Students are only permitted to bring a mobile device to school with prior written approval from the Principal. If students are given approval to bring a device to school they are only allowed to use it at school with approval from the Principal. The phone will be given to the front office for safekeeping when the student arrives at school and can be collected from the office at 3pm (not before).

Whole School Assembly

We will be holding a whole school Assembly next Friday morning (Week 3) at 9am. We are delighted to invite parents to attend this assembly to see awards be handed out and celebrate some of the academic and sporting achievements of our students. Parents will be asked to sign in using the Service NSW QR code available on all of our entry gates.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our school and community. Your involvement with our learning community is valued and appreciated.

STATE SWIMMING

Congratulations to Ashley M and Lexie B who competed at an elite level at the State Swimming Carnival last term. To represent at State level is an outstanding achievement and both Ashley and Lexie are to be congratulated on their commitment and incredible effort. Well done girls!

CROSS COUNTRY

Last Friday 107 students travelled to the Bowraville Recreation grounds to compete at the annual Bellinger/Nambucca Cross Country. Greeted by clear skies with a hint of breeze, it was perfect for running. Our students were eager to get started. They carefully studied the course, created a plan of attack as they walked the uneven ground. With mud and water obstacles to avoid they planned their safest course. Everyone ran their best and demonstrated great resilience and commitment. In total 17 students have qualified for the Mid North Coast Carnival at Nana Glen. Congratulations to:

The best news of the day was the student who had a massive smile on his face who exclaimed that he had improved heaps of places this year!

MID NORTH COAST & NORTH COAST RUGBY LEAGUE TRIALS

Last term a very enthusiastic group of boys attended the Mid North Rugby League Trials. Wyatt M, Jairah S, Archie N, Joe B, Miller B, Nate M, Evan T, Riley A, Beige C, RJ T and Max M were keen to show their talent and had been training on improving their knowledge and skills. Nate, Jairah, Archie, Miller and Joe were successful in gaining selection and travelled to Yamba last Thursday for the North Coast trials. They played enthusiastically against some very experienced players from schools as far as Tweed Heads in the north and Port Macquarie in the south. Competition was fierce and our boys showed toughness and grit and never gave up trying throughout the day. Congratulations to Joe B who has gained selection to attend the North Coast Rugby League Training Camp where he will have to undergo a further 3 days of a tough selection process to see if he makes it to the state carnival. We wish him luck!

NORTH COAST GIRLS AFL TRIALS

Four very excited girls travelled to Boambee to play for selection in the first North Coast Girls AFL Team. Halo C, Honey C, Reese L, and Mila V played competitively and worked hard to demonstrate to selectors their skills. All girls excelled and never gave up. They supported each other and returned to school proud of their efforts at their first ever AFL trial. Honey, Reese and Halo are now off to Rooty Hill in Sydney to play at the state championship in Sydney. Congratulations girls!

NORTH COAST BOYS AFL TRIALS

At the end of last term the Boys North Coast AFL trials were held in Coffs Harbour. Outstanding performances were seen from Joe B, Jairah S, Darcy T, Miller B, Archie N and Nate M who ran, passed, kicked and caught footballs in their pursuit of selection into the North Coast team. All boys excelled and worked as a team, encouraging each other throughout. Congratulations to Nate, Archie and Miller who gained selection into the North Coast team and are off to the state championships in Sydney.

MID NORTH COAST GIRLS FOOTBALL (SOCCER) TRIALS

After making it through a tough district selection process Monday saw 4 students- Halani W, Kyarna G, Reese L and Halo C travel to Coffs Harbour to compete in the North Coast Football trials. The girls worked hard with the ball and dribbled, kicked, defended and attacked throughout the selection process. Halo was selected to attend the North Coast Football trials next week. Reese was named as shadow reserve player and she is eagerly awaiting a position to become available. Terrific effort girls!

MID NORTH COAST BOYS FOOTBALL (SOCCER) TRIALS

Asher C and Zanda W were keen to perform at their best as they took on a very competitive group of boys at the Mid North Coast football trials. They passed, ran onto the ball and worked hard to prevent their attackers from moving forward. Both boys gave their best effort and were unlucky not to gain selection. Super effort boys!

DISTRICT TOUCH TRIALS

Wyatt M, Archie N, Jack N, Miller B, Nate M, Jairah S and Joe B hit the ground running at the district touch trials on Monday. Their sportsmanship, caring and sharing were evident as they worked as a team to impress selectors. Wyatt, Jairah, Joe, Miller, Jack and Archie are now off to Coffs Harbour next week for the Mid North Coast Trials. Good luck boys!
