While decorating shows on TV are fun and inspira-tional, the real life process of creating a new bath—whether it’s a master bath, guest bath, or powderroom—takes longer than many people expect and in-volves many more “behind the scenes” steps than firstmeets the eye. Here, MrNailHead spells out the eightsteps to achieving your dream, and in the followingpages, we’ll describe each one in more detail.

Eight Steps to YourNew Bath

1. Assess Your NeedsWhat are your main objectives? Yourpriorities will drive all further decisionson budget, style, products and more.So give this step some time and talk itthrough with your family.

2. Establish a BudgetDetermine how much you can realisti-cally invest in your new bath and howyou plan to pay for it. Shop around toget an idea of product prices and remember that installation/labor will be approximately 20-40% of the budget.

3. Determine Your DeadlineHow soon do you want your new bathproject completed? When determininga deadline, allow extra time for customor special order products to arrive, dayand weekend access to your home, andholidays.

4. Finalize a Room LayoutYour MrNailHead professional may haveseveral ideas on how you can best useyour space, each with different budgetimplications. Make notes on how youuse your space, where the currentroadblocks are, and what you wishworked better.

Page 6: Bath PlannerThank you for requesting your personal copy of MrNailHead’s Bathroom Planner. You’ve been dreaming about a new bath and imagining how it will add to the daily enjoyment

5. Decide on a LookDefine your style by collecting picturesfrom magazines, visiting showroomsand home shows, browsing decoratingwebsites, and make notes of the designelements and colors you like.

6. Choose ProductsIn any bathroom project, you’ll have anendless list of product decisions tomake. Your experienced MrNailHeadprofessional can help you sort outwhat’s truly the best for your needs.

7. Plan for the InstallationPlan time to be at home while MrNail-Head’s electricians, plumbers, tile con-tractors, carpenters, cabinet installers, etc. will be working in your home. Makeallowances for children and pets.

How Long WillIt Take?

Longer than a TV episode, for sure! The size and scope of your project will determine the timeframe, whichcould be anywhere from four to sixweeks for simple improvements orchanges, and six or eight months ormore for a full-scale remodel.

Be aware of ordering anddelivery timesTiming also depends on productchoices. Special plumbing fixtures canrequire weeks for delivery and thesame is true of custom cabinets. Thenthere are some things that just haveto wait their turn. Grout or sealants, for example, may have to dry beforework can continue.

Sometimes, things happenUnexpected delays can occur if anystructural deficiencies are found whenthe walls or floors are opened up. This is true especially bathrooms, because water damage can be hiddenunderneath flooring, cabinets, or tile. It’s best to tell your MrNailHead professional if you have a deadline foryour new bath, so we can give you arealistic time estimate based on theparameters of your specific project.

8. A Job Well DoneKeep all receipts, contracts, warrantiesand product information, and also makesure you understand the proper careand maintenance of all new products.Enjoy your new dream bath!

Have You Thought About ... ?As you plan your new bath, you may have some special interests or personalpriorities that need to be considered. You might be passionate about the envi-ronment and want to incorporate sustainable materials in the design, or youcould have health and safety issues with certain products or materials. Youmight also have long-term family needs to consider. No matter what your con-cerns are, your MrNailHead professional will be able to address them and helpwith planning and implementation each step of the way!

Have You Thought About ... Ecological Responsibility?MrNailHead can help you select environmentallyfriendly, sustainable and attractive products for your new bath, and can also manage yourproject in an ecologically responsible manner. Here are some things to consider:

Can some materials from your old bath be 1recycled, donated, or reused in a basement? Can you use recycled countertop materials or2flooring?Do you want new fixtures (toilets, faucets,3showerheads) to carry the EPA’s watersenselabel, which are 20% more water efficient thanaverage products in that category. Will the wood in your new vanity cabinets 4come from a sustainably managed forest? Sustainable wood products — products madefrom forests that grow quickly and are easilyreplenished — have become more popular. Examples of fast-growing species are bamboo, eucalyptus, cane, and some maple. How energy-efficient do you want your new5lighting to be? During the redesign/renovation, do you want 6to change to new, more efficient windows? If any walls are going to be opened, do you7want to add more insulation? Will new finishes and materials be low-VOC?8Indoor air is three times more polluted thanoutdoor air, and according to the EPA, is considered one of the top 5 hazards to humanhealth. Paints and finishes are among the leading causes. Paints and finishes release lowlevel toxic emissions into the air for years afterapplication. The source of these toxins is a vari-ety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)which, until recently, were essential to the performance of the paint. New environmentalregulations, and consumer demand, have led to the development of low-VOC and zero-VOCpaints and finishes. Most paint manufacturersnow produce one or more non-VOC variety of paint. These new paints are durable, cost-effective and less harmful to human andenvironmental health.

Have You Thought About ... Health Considerations?A thoughtfully designed bath can contribute to your family’s health, safetyand well-being. For example: Here are some things to consider:

Proper ventilation removes humidity that can contribute to mold.1Water quality issues can be addressed with a variety of filter types.2Medications and cleaning products can be stored safely out of the reach of3children.If anyone in your home is highly sensitive and/or allergic, special cabinet4finishes and materials can be used and will minimize problems.Non-slip flooring can help prevent falls. 5Proper use of gFcis (ground-fault circuit interrupters) can prevent shocks.6Adequate lighting can increase safety. 7Whirlpools and steam baths can foster relaxation and soothe sore muscles.8Aromatherapy and chromatherapy can offer health benefits.9Grab bars, which are now very attractive, can enhance safety in the bath10for people of all ages.

Have You ThoughtAbout ... ?

Sustainability Trends InBath DesignGreen living isn’t a new idea, but it iscertainly gaining in popularity. Reportson new product innovations from therecent Kitchen & Bath Industry Show(KBIS), the Consumer ElectronicsShow (CES) and NAHB’s InternationalBuilder Show (IBS) were packed withthe latest trends and products forhealthy, eco-friendly homes.

On-Trend Options UsingSustainable Bath TileIf you're looking for an eco-friendlyoption for decorating your bathroom, consider “green” tile options. You canremain eco-friendly without compro-mising style and class by using sus-tainable materials like recycled glass, natural stone, cork, concrete, bamboo, and rubber.

Watersense Makes SenseThe EPA is encouraging water conser-vation efforts in American householdsby sponsoring and federally funding aprogram known as “Watersense.” Wa-tersense participants are rewardedwith a special seal that designateswater efficient homes, products, fix-tures, and appliances that meet thestringent Watersense standards andcriteria. If you plan on replacing bath-room faucets, showerheads, and toi-lets, look for products with theWatersense seal! These fixtures willmaximize the efficient use of water, minimize consumption, and providelower water bills. A win-win!

Have You Thought About ... User Friendliness? All baths should function beautifully for their users, but it’s worthwhile tothink about any long-term changes anticipated in your family. Here aresome things to consider:

Will the bath be used by someone who might prefer to dry or style their1hair, apply makeup, or perform other grooming tasks while seated? Will it be used by anyone relying on a wheelchair, walker, cane or other2device? If so, is space adequate for turning in a wheelchair? Is the showerdesigned without a threshold and is there a seat in the shower? Are thereproperly installed and located grab bars (towel bars are not a substitute!).Is there enough lighting for someone with diminished eyesight? 3Can the vanity be raised to a more back-friendly height? 4Can drawers, rollouts, and pullouts make items accessible without bend-5ing?Are faucet handles easy to operate?6Are there thermostatic and/or pressure-balanced valves to prevent being7scalded by water that is too hot?

What does a bathroom cost? You ultimately decide on the cost of your bath by the scope of your project, the products you select, and the services you’d like. Of course, labor rates will have bearingon your budget rate too.

Determining Your Budget

On a cost-per-square-foot basis, a bath can beone of the most expensive rooms to remodel. That’s due in part to the complexities of plumb-ing and to the need for multiple contractors towork sequentially in a small space.

However, with a wide variety of quality productsavailable, there’s a bath for almost any budget, ranging from the very attractive to the superdeluxe.

To share a few examples: a master suite with allthe amenities and luxurious materials in a majormetro area could reach $100,000. However, alovely yet modest makeover in a smaller townmight be achieved for less than $10,000.

o Keep your priorities front andcenter. Do you choose a designerfaucet for several thousand dollars orone that’s about $100? ... Do youchoose a $100 sink or one that’s$3,500? ... Do you choose a $4polished brass knob or a $98 crystalmodel? What is important to you?

o Cabinetry and hardware typicallyaccount for about 16% of yourinvestment and fixtures account forabout 15%.

o Remember that installation andlabor generally runs approximately20-40% of your overall budget.

Ways To SaveOn Your Project:

Set priorities so you know where to •allocate your dollars.

Don’t move plumbing or walls unless•it will greatly improve the space.

Avoid changing your mind once the•products are ordered and the installation has begun.

Have a clear set of specifications •before comparison shopping.

Be sure to compare exactly the•same products, not just similarones. The price for the same modelof faucet will vary by finish andgranite prices vary by grade.

Everyone shops online, but it is •important to visit showrooms and besure the things you see online looksthe same in person.

Some Friendly AdviceGet a written estimate with detailed•specifications of all products andservices.

Be sure that you understand the•payment schedule. Make sure youunderstand if there is a design fee,a retainer, what payments are dueand when.

Set aside some money – perhaps•10% to 20% of your project – forchanges, unexpected installation issues, and contingencies.

While it may not be fun having your bathroom torn outand your household disrupted, proper planning can reallyhelp alleviate some of the stress. Get a jump start with ourchecklists here.

How Will It Come Together?

o Where will products go before installation? In the garage? On a porch? In the living room or dining room?

o How will products be delivered? Through the front or back door? Down a hallway? Up or down stairs? Through a bedroom?

o How will your old bath be removed?

o Where will you put a dumpster if needed?

o What hours will the crew be allowed to work in your home?

1 – Think About

o Keep pets and children out of the work area

o Close off the rest of the house as much as possible

o Remove artwork and wall decor from walls that adjoin the bath, since hammering can jar them

o Communicate in advance with neighbors so they know what to expect

o Be accessible during the project so the crew can contact you

2 – Remember To

o Products on hand before work begins, be aware of product availability and lead times

o Don’t substitute products without telling your designer because even small changes can have a big impact on time an budget

o Keep change orders to a minimum

3 – Keep On Schedule

Do It Yourself? Yes, No, Or Maybe? The success of your bath depends on the quality of the installation and attention to finedetails. In inexperienced hands, vanity doorsand drawers may not align properly, tile maynot lay out attractively, different materials maymeet in awkward ways, and the overall lookcan be a disappointment.

If you’re thinking of doing it yourself, realistically consider your skills and timeavailable. Are you generally handy? Do youhave the right tools? Have you tackled a project like this before? Do you have any help?Do you like doing projects like this? Would you be better off handling some tasks likepainting, wallpapering, or installing a sink orfloor, versus doing the whole job?

If you’d like to be hands on in your bath project, MrNailHead can work with you to create a plan and supply fixtures, fittings, vanities and other materials. We can even helpyou complete any project that you may feel uncomfortable doing yourself.
