Dear Fellow Parishioners: As the St. Ignatius Parish representatives during the Renew My Church process, we wanted to touch base with everyone in the aftermath of the archdiocese’s decision. To be honest, we are heartbroken and disappointed. However, we know our faith is stronger than any institutional decision. We all know mystery is one of the great cornerstones of faith. In every obstacle there is opportunity for growth and development and ra-ther than letting our disappointment govern our thinking, we want to find a way forward.

How did we get here? As you will recall, as a parish we participated in a discernment process geared toward imagining the possibilities of the future for St. Ignatius and our community at large. While we did not neces-sarily anticipate the closure of our parish, we did discuss the concept of creating a mission center in its place. The good news is that the archdio-cese is giving us time to develop this concept more fully over the next 12 to 18 months. With-out denying any of the sadness we may be feel-ing, it would be good to recall that things had been moving along as planned:

•We engaged in a helpful eight-week process with our fellow parishioners that led to the dream of creating a mission center.

• We got the upper administration at Loyola Uni-versity to show real interest in the mission center. We received support from several departments (faculty/staff) at the university whose staff could envision their participation in the center (nursing, psychology, social work, IPS).

• We received enthusiastic support from the Jesu-it community, indicating their willingness to assist with liturgies, retreats and faith formation pro-grams.

•We ran these ideas and possibilities by Bishop Mark Bartosic and as well as others involved in the Renew My Church process and made it a key aspect of the presentation made to the Renew My Church Executive Committee by our grouping. The response at all levels has been overwhelm-ingly positive.

•Deacon Chris also has discussed the vision of the center with the pastors at St. Gertrude and St.

Como representantes de la parroquia de San Igna-cio durante el proceso de Renovar Mi Iglesia, que-ríamos ponernos en contacto con ustedes después de la decisión de la arquidiócesis. Para ser hones-to, estamos desconsolados y decepcionados. Sin embargo, sabemos que nuestra fe es más fuerte que cualquier decisión institucional. Todos sabe-mos que el misterio es una de las grandes piedras angulares de la fe. En cada obstáculo hay una oportunidad para el crecimiento y el desarrollo futuro y, en lugar de dejar que nuestra decepción gobierne nuestro pensamiento, queremos encon-trar un camino a seguir.

¿Cómo llegamos a este momento? Como recordarán, como parroquia participamos en un proceso de discernimiento orientado a imagi-nar las posibilidades del futuro para San Ignacio y nuestra comunidad en general. Si bien no anticipa-mos necesariamente el cierre total de nuestra pa-rroquia, sí discutimos el concepto de crear un cen-tro misionero en su lugar. La buena noticia es que la arquidiócesis nos está dando tiempo para desa-rrollar este concepto de manera más completa du-rante los próximos 12 a 18 meses. Sin negar nada de la tristeza que podamos estar sintiendo, es bueno recordar que las cosas habían ido avanzan-do según lo planeado:

• Participamos en un proceso muy útil de ocho se-manas con nuestros compañeros feligreses que nos llevó al sueño de crear un centro misionero. • Conseguimos que la administración superior de la Universidad de Loyola mostrara un interés real en el centro misionero. Recibimos el apoyo de va-rios departamentos (facultad / personal) de la uni-versidad que pudieron vislumbrar su participación en el centro (enfermería, psicología, trabajo social, IPS). • Recibimos un apoyo entusiasta de la comunidad jesuita, indicando su disposición a ayudar con li-turgias, retiros y programas de formación en la fe. • Presentamos estas ideas y posibilidades por par-te del obispo Mark Bartosic y otras personas invo-lucradas en el proceso de Renew My Church y lo convertimos en un aspecto clave de la presenta-ción que nuestro grupo hizo al Comité Ejecutivo de Renew My Church. La respuesta en todos los niveles ha sido abrumadoramente positiva. The pandemic and the archdiocese’s decision The coronavirus pandemic not only set severe limits on what and how we were able to discern, but it created a limbo – particularly for Loyola University, which no longer felt in a position to make a significant financial commitment (as they had indicated initially). It is worth highlighting that neither the archdioceses nor the university has ever said “no” to our project. But the univer-sity did state that the pandemic had been a “game-changer” for them and that, until the over-all scenario becomes clearer (which may take time) Loyola University cannot invest large sums in the project. We have been assured that the archdiocese’s de-cision was not affected by Fr. Puentes or his short-lived tenure as our pastor. There is no separate or side deal between Loyola and the archdiocese for the sale of the school buildings.

What does the decision mean in real terms? St. Ignatius will cease to exist as a parish as of June 30, 2021. The Sunday collections will con-tinue to support our parish until that time. Our Mass schedule is expected to remain intact at least until then as well. The transition will entail ongoing discussions with Deacon Chris and the pastors, as well as, parishioners, Loyola Universi-ty, the Jesuit community and community leaders. Here is what the archdiocese told us regarding the mission center: “That local leadership continue to engage with Loyola University and the local Jesuit community regarding their interest in developing a mission outreach center at the St. Ignatius campus, while exploring all options for reducing facility opera-tions and capital expenses. While the Operations Transition phase typically takes a year, this partic-ular transition may extend beyond that timeframe.”

Where do we go from here? Short term steps and long-term plans . . . In the short term, the hope is to start really devel-oping the mission center and partner with social service agencies that can serve our community

La pandemia y la decisión de la arquidiócesis La pandemia de coronavirus no solo estableció límites severos sobre qué y cómo pudimos discer-nir, sino que creó un limbo, particularmente para la Universidad de Loyola, que ya no se sentía en condiciones de hacer un compromiso financiero significativo (como habían indicado inicialmente). Cabe destacar que ni la arquidiócesis ni la univer-sidad le han dicho nunca “no” a nuestro proyecto. Pero la universidad afirmó que la pandemia había sido un "cambio de juego" para ellos y que, hasta que el escenario general se aclare (lo que puede llevar tiempo), la Universidad de Loyola no está en condiciones para invertir grandes sumas en el proyecto. Sin embargo, se nos ha asegurado que la decisión de la arquidiócesis no se vio afectada por el P. Puentes o su breve mandato como nuestro pastor. Tampoco existe un acuerdo separado o paralelo entre Loyola y la arquidiócesis para la venta de los edificios escolares.

¿Qué significa la decisión en términos reales? San Ignacio dejará de existir como parroquia a partir del 30 de junio de 2021. Pero hasta ese momento, las colectas dominicales continuarán apoyando a nuestra parroquia. Se espera que nuestro horario de misas permanezca intacto al menos hasta entonces también. La transición im-plicará discusiones continuas con el diácono Chris y los pastores, así como con los feligreses, la Uni-versidad de Loyola, la comunidad jesuita y los lí-deres comunitarios. Esto es lo que la arquidiócesis nos ha dicho sobre el centro de misión: “Que el liderazgo local continúe interactuando con la Universidad de Loyola y la comunidad Jesuita con respecto a la posibilidad de desarrollar un centro de alcance misionero en el campus de St. Ignatius, mientras explora todas las opciones para reducir las operaciones de las instalaciones y los gastos de capital. needs using the rectory and church building. There are myriad Jesuit outreach programs that may be interested in using our space. We are considering establishing a nonprofit as a funding mechanism for the mission center and mainte-nance of the shrines. The hope is that the mission center would also include the food pantry and programs such as the St. Jerome’s hot lunch pro-gram and the St. Gertrude’s senior outreach pro-gram.

So where does that leave us? We have several options. We could do nothing and accept the sad fact that the pandemic over-rides our plans. But we decided in the fall of 2019 that our aim is to be of service to our fel-low parishioners, the whole Catholic community in our neighborhood and the larger community of Rogers Park and Edgewater. What we hope to embark on is a way to preserve the best traditions of our parish, our service and our fellowship and our faith. To this end, we hope to move forward with a process of fact finding and organization. We hope to work with our sis-ter parishes, the archdiocese, Loyola and outside agencies to get a better sense of what is realistic to move forward with in the short term and what we can hope to achieve further in the future. We expect to organize committees to explore real possibilities for the buildings at the St. Ignatius campus and see how we move forward with the mission center idea.

Among the ideas we can explore for the rectory:

•It could be a center to house the different Igna-tian projects in the city (e.g., Ignatian Volunteer Corps, Ignatian Spirituality Project, Jesuit Volun-teer Corps, etc.) – projects that are currently op-erating out of different sites, but which could benefit from synergy, etc.

•It could become a residential facility for women and their children overcoming domestic violence (allowing each family unit to live there for six months to get healed and reoriented. (this has worked well at other places)

Among the ideas we can explore for our school property:

•A senior living center which would replace the school with a residential living space for senior citizens who are on Medicaid. If such an option became a reality, Loyola’s nursing department,

•Something like the Jeremiah Program, which, much like our original mission center proposal, offers services and strategies for moving families from poverty to prosperity. They do this by help-ing single moms to obtain employment, helping children to succeed in school, connects young people with a university so that they can consider college education

The pandemic poses a challenge, but shows why the mission center is needed In many ways, the circumstances of the pandemic are our main obstacle. But we can also look at the effects of the pandemic as a reason for creat-ing the mission center. The economic recession, the isolation and despair and the educational set-backs wrought by the pandemic require, more than ever, the kind of services that were originally envisioned for the mission Center. Having said this, we need to be realistic and not get ahead of grace. We need to heal our hurt and move forward with faith. Let’s keep the dream of the mission center in our prayer. And as the year progresses and we slowly return to something resembling normalcy, let’s aim to find a creative and prayerful way to mark July 31, the feast of St. Ignatius.

Lo hacen ayudando a las madres solteras a obtener empleo, ayudando a los niños a tener éxito en la escuela, conectando a los jóvenes con una universidad para que puedan considerar la educación universitaria.

La pandemia nos presenta con un desafío real pero demuestra una necesidad… Sin lugar a dudas, la pandemia se convirtió en nuestro mayor obstáculo. Sin embargo, también es cierto, que podemos considerar los efectos de la pandemia como la mejor justificación para la crea-ción de un centro de misión. La recesión económi-ca, el aislamiento y la desesperación y los reveses educativos provocados por la pandemia requieren, más que nunca, el tipo de servicios que original-mente se previeron para el Centro de Misión. Dicho esto, debemos ser realistas y no adelantar-nos a la gracia. Necesitamos sanar nuestro dolor y seguir adelante con fe. Mantengamos el sueño del centro misionero en nuestra oración. Y a medida de que avance el año y volvamos len-tamente a algo parecido a la normalidad, intentare-mos encontrar una manera creativa y llena de ora-ción de conmemorar el 31 de julio, la fiesta de San Ignacio.

New technology for a new year!

For several years now the food pantry has been com-puterized. This allows us to do a one-time intake in-terview of each family at later visits the information is reviewed an updated. Last month we transitioned to a new program “Link 2 Feed.” The soft ware was provided by the Greater Chicago Food Depository and enables us to get a better picture of the needs of our families. The basic questions such as the mem-bers in your families and their ages is still asked but we now have a way to track dietary restrictions, food allergies and medical conditions. This will allow us to tailor our menu to food items that are more com-patible with the various needs of our families. It will also enable us to schedule educational programs to address our client’s needs. All the information will be kept private. It will be up to each family to deter-mine how much information that they share. We hope to be able to share a 2020 recap next week.

Ya hace muchos años que la despensa ha estado computarizada. Esto nos permite hacer una vez la entrevista con cada familia y en las siguientes visitas la información es revisada y puesta al día. El mes pasado hemos pasado a un nuevo programa "Link 2 Feed.” El programa nos ha sido dado por Greater Chicago Food Depository y nos permite tener una mejor idea de las necesidades de nuestras familias. Las cuestiones básicas como miembros de la familia y edades son las misas pero ahora podemos recopi-lar información como dietas especiales, alergias y condiciones medicas.
