Remember to collect your costume before the band house closes off completely and your costume is sold! Be organized and pace yourself appropriately, especially if your personal event calendar is loaded. Before leaving home for events ensure that you have the address and telephone number of the place that you’re staying stored in your phone as well as the number for a taxi service. Make sure that you know where the party is located and how to get there. Remember your fete tickets before heading out the door. Walk with vex money. Avoid dark areas especially in parking lots. Travel to the washroom in pairs. Prearrange transportation home. If travelling in a group with your own vehicle, each person can take turns being the designated driver throughout your stay. Try traditional Bajan food and take in some of the cultural events. Bridgetown market is the perfect event to kill two birds with one stone. Use the Barbados Free Wi-Fi app to find free Wi-Fi hotspots around the island.
Style Etiquette For The Season

Don’t ever be that person! + Dress appropriately for the particular event. Before you choose your outfit consult our event guide to determine if it’s dressy versus casual. You can also visit the event’s social media pages or even Google Images to view photos from last year’s event to get an idea of how people dressed. + Wear the correct footwear. Again, consult our fete guide beforehand to determine the terrain of the location where the event will be held. + If the event poster contains any of these words: ‘jouvert’, ‘paint’, ‘mud’ or ‘powder’, then don’t come out in your Sunday best. You are sure to fall victim to these elements.+ Always be confident no matter what you wear. If you think you look good then what other people say should be like water off a duck’s back!

Troy De Artivist Burgess is one of the last standing wire benders in Barbados; an art form revered by many for the sheer skill and boundless creativity possessed by experts. Wire benders are equipped with the knowledge to transform a mind-knowledge to transform a mind-lingering concept into the tangible reality of an elaborate costume. Thus, it is not surprising that De Artivist, a Bajan with over 10 years experience, is celebrated for his mastery of the art. On the other hand, he is also treasured for being among a special group, which many fear is on the verge of extinction.
The fear that wire bending is a dying art form is not only pressing in Barbados but acBarbados but across the region at large and with it, comes the dread of losing a significant chunk of creativity presently afforded to costume design. De Artivist, who acquired his masterful skills by way of self-teaching as well as through Trinidadian and Brazilian mentors, agrees and explains his reasoning following.
“Most people tend to use plas“Most people tend to use plastic molds and other types of mechanically made forms that would normally be created by the wire bender. Also, with 3D printing becoming more affordable, that too will soon make its way into costume making. Furthermore, most of the wire benders have either passed on or are too old to practice anymore.”
With that being said, the burning question was asked, “What are we as Caribbean people doing to ensuCaribbean people doing to ensure that the skill is passed on to the youth in order to ensure its longevity?” To this query, De Artivist noted that there are schools dedicated to wire bending in Trinidad and on the home front, the NCF offered basic courses in the past albeit a more comprehensive program is needed.
In fact, this veteran wire bender for many of the large Kadooment bands including Betty West and Jump Promotions, intends to pioneer this iniinitiative in Barbados and bequeath his skills to curious Barbadians. Apart from his many informal teaching sessions, De Artivist plans to open a carni-val school in Barbados by November of this year and welcomes any input from the NCF.
To add, De Artivist asks earnestly for the reintroduction of the King and Queen of the Band competition, as he believes that this is a vital element missing in the festival. Also, he eagerly awaits any opportunity to play a more front row part in the festival. Until that time arrives, De Artivist will continue to work diligently to produce the high quality costumes that have brought him much recognition. He also offers alterations to costumes, shoe embellishments and airbrush body painting services.

Eat a hearty breakfast. You’ll need the energy for the jump and the full stomach
for alcohol.
Note the name and address of the place that you are staying. Store the
information in your cell phone along with the number of a taxi service
but make a plan B in case the battery dies.
Arrive at the National Stadium early so you don’t miss your
chance to parade in front of the judges or to be on television!
Remember to walk with the cup in your goodie bag. You’ll
need it to get drinks from the bar.
Drink responsibly.
Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water between
alcohol.
Dance inside the ropes. This is a sure way to keep
intruders at bay.
Organize a meeting spot in case anyone in
your group gets lost. Your band’s music truck
is a good point or the mobile restrooms.
Walk with vex money and make sure you
have enough that can purchase food on
the road if you get hungry.
Protect your body parts at all times. Use
both sunblock and the other kind of
protection if the situation arises.
Organize a ride home beforehand. If
driving, make sure that you have a
designated driver.
Consider using the shuttle service offered
by your band so that you don’t have to
worry about getting your vehicle from the
National Stadium at the end of the jump.
Free up, have loads of fun and always remember
above all else put safety first.
Accept drinks from strangers.
Mix alcohol. The hangover will be brutal!
Get messy drunk as you are likely to make poor choices.
Be afraid to wukkup. 99% of observers lining the street wish they had
the guts to jump.
Behave badly if a random stranger wukksup on you. Just decline nicely.
Wukkup on police officers. This could land you in a cell!
Climb the mental wall if you lack agility or you’re unable to balance while wukking up.
