You have the choice to use RECYCLED panels when building your new playstructure! Available in 11 colour combinations, the distinctive black core results from combining and recycling coloured plastic household containers - waste that would otherwise end up in landfills. The panels offer a post-consumer recycled content of 73%. The recycled colour choices can be selected for any Permalene panel currently available as either a one-colour or a two-colour option.

Blue Mountain Park is known as one of Coquitlam’s original destination parks. Up until October 2012, the park had an aging wooden playstructure that was falling apart with pieces being removed and not replaced. With the park’s high volume of usage, The City of Coquitlam team knew they had to take action. A new playground at Blue Mountain Park would need to be inclusive and appeal to a wide range of audiences. The City of Coquitlam conducted research, which involved gathering feedback and opinions by conducting surveys, as well as product testing. They worked closely with the Step-by-Step Child Development Society and Porter Street Elementary to create a final idea.

Once the data was collected, the Operations Team put out a Request for Information (RFI) and many playground suppliers bid. Based on the RFI, The City of Coquitlam chose Habitat Systems, supplier of Landscape Structures play equipment, to supply and install playground equipment for Blue Mountain Park. “We have confidence that cutting edge research has been done, the equipment is top of the line, follows the latest trends and is some of the best equip-ment on the market,” Phil Hebner, Assets and Operations Manager, City of Coquitlam, shares.

The next step was narrowing down a final design concept. The City of Coquitlam Operations Team came up with three different design ideas and decided to go with a Nature Inspired theme. They then worked with Habitat to translate the design into a playground that had natural play elements, as well as inclusive features. “Habitat provided excellent design visuals that really showed their professionalism and expertise in graphic capabilities”, Hebner said.

The project required a great deal of collaboration within the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, as well as with Habitat Systems. “Habitat’s scheduling was seamless and there were no hitches. The equipment even arrived ahead of schedule and the installation went very smoothly”, Hebner noted.

Habitat also assisted with the budgeting of the project, highlighting the key pieces and finding a suitable design that would fit within budget and incorporate all essential play elements. As many municipalities know, budgeting can be a challenge when embarking on a playground project. One way The City was able to cut down on costs was to utilize their in-house operations team to do the civil work, which included all site preparation. This allowed The City to focus the bulk of their capital budget on surfacing and the playground equipment. Once the site preparation was completed, the equipment was installed by Habitat. “There was a good partnership between The City and Habitat on the installation process. It was a great learning experience for city staff, especially in learning the particular specs for site preparation”, Hebner commented.

“Overall, the Playground Project was a positive experience from start to finish”, Hebner shares, “It was a team building exercise for The City, as many different sections worked together to make the playground a reality. The staff shared a great sense of pride in being involved in the installation process, as well as being able to take ownership of the overall design concept. The Parks, Recreation and Culture department are confident that the project resulted in a product that the citizens of Coquitlam will be happy with for many years to come.”

pHil Hebner, Assets and Operations Manager, City of Coquitlam Parks, Recreation & Culture1. Engage the community. Have a strong grasp of the needs of the community and the demographic you are working with. Do the research - conduct studies and surveys.2. Manage the expectations of the project and get a good handle on the scope of the work. Know that you can deliver and meet the expectations you have set-out.3. Apply for a grant if you can. Matching grants are great, but make sure you apply well in advance.
