Disability

Insurance

What Does It Do?

Disability Insurance replaces a portion of your paycheck if you miss work due to an injury or illness.

Elimination Period

The amount of days that you must be out of work due to injury or sickness before the benefit becomes payable. Several elimination periods are available for you to choose from to fit your budget.

Benefit Duration

The amount of time your benefit is payable usually indicated by the abbreviation SSNRA, which stands for Social Security Normal Retirement Age. Essentially your disability benefit is payable until approximately age 65 or up to 2 years depending on the plan you choose and your age at disability.

Maximum Benefit Amount

The maximum dollar amount you will receive per month based on your election during Open Enrollment.

First Day Hospital Benefit

This provision states that if you elect an elimination period of 30 days or less, your disability benefit will be payable on Day 1 should you be confined to the hospital for 24 consecutive hours as an in-patient.

Qualifying Events

What if I want to change my benefits after Open Enrollment?

If your benefit is pre-taxed, in order to make a change to that election, a Qualifying Event must occur.

So what is a Qualifying Event?

While this list is not fully inclusive, it does provide relevant examples which would allow you to make a change to your benefit elections outside of Open Enrollment. Check out some examples below!

I’ve had a Qualifying Event. What should I do now?

Make sure if one of these events occur, you notify your Benefits Administrator within 31 days of the event and provide any necessary documentation of the change!

D is for Deductible

The deductible is the amount of expenses that must be paid out of pocket before an insurer will pay any expenses.

E is for Eligibility

Eligibility refers to the criteria that must be met before enrolling in a specific benefit plan. Eligibility factors include number of hours worked, pre-existing condition, age, and if you’re actively at work.

F is for Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

A Flexible Spending Account, also known as a FSA, is a tax-sheltered account that allows an individual to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for future eligible expenses. A healthcare FSA is used for eligible health care expenses incurred by you, your spouse or children claimed on federal taxes. A dependent care FSA is used for eligible child or adult day care expenses while you are at work. Eligible expenses must be incurred within the plan year and contributions are use-it-or-lose-it, however, some employers allow for a grace period or $500 rollover provision.
