VOL. ll NQJ3 VANDALISM HERE BEING INVESTIGATE) BY POLICE The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police were investigating serious vandalism committed in the Weidman area Friday night, look ing for hoodlums who broke two plate glass windows in the former Walter Davy Building west of town, and the pulling up of the Bishop’s Shopping Center sign at the corner of the Air Line Road and the Herr road. The large sign, firmly implanted in heavy soil with 2x2 legs, was uprooted and thrown into a ditch. Two Stop signs were destroyed a mile south of Maeder’s corner on the Coldwater Lake Road, Deputy Sheriff Charles Kinsman said. The Davy building has been sold to a new owner, and is oc cupied by bee hives. No reason for breaking of the big windows could be found. Deputies Kinsman and Ricbard Wood have regular nightly runs throughout this area, and they check out Weidman, Horr, Brin ton, Wood’s Store, Stevenson Lake, Beal City and Coldwater Lake and the County Park there. Such acts as the latest one, of vandalism, are committed after the officers’ runs are completed, and the two men have a large area to check. Deputy Kinsman told the Mes senger this week he has handed out a number of tickets for speed ing in Weidman, and one for reckless driving which cost the driver $50 fine and court costs and the loss of his driver’s li cense foi six monthi. His activities on this detail appear to be getting some relief from speeders through the town. Editor’sColumnOUR NEWS WRITERSREALLY COME THROUGH!

Seems like this year there Isavobeen a doggoned number of Monday legal holidays, when themail does not go out. What thatdoes to a weekly paper is nobody’sbusiness 1

What it does is gum up the mailing schedules of all rural newswriters, and we are proud to pointout that the Messenger writers always seem to come through--” Norrain nor sleet nor dark of night,”as they used to say about themail’s being delivered.

We are deeply appreciative ofour news writers, and their complete co-operation on these legalholiday dates when their usualmailing days are no good.

Some send the news to town byrelatives, friends, husbands, orbring it themselves. All co-operate completely, as when we callfrantically and ask when we canpick up the news letters by driving

‘round and getting it ourselves. We always did say the Messenger

though long years has had themost competent and faithful roster of reporters a weekly laperever had.

We thank you, and offer oursincere appreciation, news writers!

A letter Tuesday from our sisterMildred, who recently returnedto her home in Fort Myers, FLL.,

mentioned Hurricane Betsy, and,Mildred said she was keepingclose tabs on the unpredictablestorm.

Mildred is no stranger to theseterrible storms, as one passedover Fort Myers and her homethere in recent years. In fact, the eye of the hurricane passedover Fort Myers.

Northern relatives worry aboutthese storms apd the people involved, just as the Southernersrelated to us worry when theyhear (and they do!) on their televisions and radios 01 our tornadoes up here.

WHO-ALL REMEMBERS TI-US?It’s the Weidman School of 1933in the old school house acrossthe river to the east of town.

Town kids used to wallc toschool in those days, and for

many it was a walk of a mileor more. Many walked in fromnearby farms.

We’re asking our readers tomake their own identificationsin this picture, as we’re gettingold, and can’t make out morethan a few of these children, now in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s,most with spouses and childrenof their own.We do recognize one or two: Wesee Walter Smith, who loanedthe Messenger this priceless reminder of old days; and we seehis small sister, Helen, and webelieve we see Joan Middles-worth, now Joan Charnes, theCommerce instructor at Weid-rman Community School.

Anyhow, it’s wonderful to seethis picture, and figure out theSchool of 1933.

Like those of us before them, these kids walked across the ancient bridge at Weidman’s eastapproach (there was a walkway, then, on the north edge of thebridge).Walt says the boy in the darksweater holding the placard saying “1933” is Carl Thomas.

Walt says the pictures cost 50cents apiece, and he saved uphis money for a long time, tomake sure he’d get one.
