Open Textbook ProjectOpen Textbook Summit
Vancouver, BC May 28, 2015
Project Background
• In Dec. 2012 – Feb.2013, Camosun Piping Department Foundations Programs undertook the process of Program Review and Renewal
Redesign plan
• The project required a long-term development and delivery plan.
• Six redesign goals were identified as a result of the planning process.
• Hundreds of tasks were identified over a 5-phase approach.
• We are presently about halfway through phase 2.
Phase 1
Some of the highlights of Phase 1 were: • Setting up the existing course in D2L• Creating a gradebook for all theory and practical
marks (approx. 30 tests and 90 projects)• Creating computer testing for all line tests, which are
automatically imported into the student gradebook• Removing all project instructions from print
packages and placing onto D2L with option to print as needed
Phase 2
Four of the largest tasks in Phase 2: • Introduction of customized learning paths• Development of multimedia rich content• Online marking of Practicals• Development of online textbooks to
supplement online material
Open Learning Agency Common Core Modules
• In our existing program for the first level of study, students use the old green Open Learning Agency (OLA) text books which cover, for better or worse, the learning competencies that are common to many trades.
Customizing learning paths
Changing from one course to five courses of Face-to-face enhanced and blended delivery
Trades Nomenclature• A line represents a broad theme within a trade’s Program Outline,
the overarching curriculum framework for course delivery, issued by the ITA. Example: Line A: Use Safe Work Practices.
• Within a line, there are various subcategories organized by competency. Competencies are threads that inform various aspects of the theme found in a line. There are five competencies within Line A in TACC (see handout).
• Within each competency, there are multiple learning tasks. Learning tasks represent the broad outcomes that must be met in order to ensure that all aspects of a competency have been addressed. Learning tasks tend to borrow language from Bloom’s Taxonomy, such as “Describe” and “Use.”
Development of online text to supplement online material
• Camosun has received funding from BCcampus for the creation of Open Educational Resources (OER) to update and replace the outdated OLA Common Core textbooks.
TACC Open Textbooks• These textbooks will be available in a paper-based format
and multiple digital formats for various devices and platforms:– PDF; printable document with TOC and hyperlinks intact– HTML; basic export of an HTML file and its assets, suitable
for use in Learning Management Systems– Reflowable EPUB; format suitable for all screen sizes
including phones– Fixed layout EPUB; suitable for tablet readers. It strictly
adheres to the print layout while allowing for some interactive elements
TACC Open Textbooks
TACC Open Textbooks will be available at BCcampus September 2015.• They will have the Creative Commons Attribution
(BY) license which allows you to share and remix (create derivative works), even for commercial use, so long as attribution is given.
• For example, our high school partners can incorporate this free material into their programs.
• Students are better prepared when they arrive.
