THE AIDS MINISTRY A church based ministry established June 19, 1989 with a mission to provide emotional, physical and spiritual support. Provide HIV/AIDS awareness and education through written and verbal communication to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. In 1989, Brentwood Baptist Churchpartnered with the Foundation forInterfaith Research and Ministry todevelop a respite care team toprovide support for clients andfamilies with AIDS. 5. The AIDS Ministry developed supportgroups at the church which was assisted by apsychologist who was on the church staff. Education sessions were conducted for allchurch organizations for example, deacons,staff ministers, choirs, youth groups, etc. 6. Staff attended meetings and international conferences. 7. Currently, the Brentwood AIDSMinistry spearheads the BlackChurch Week of Prayer for theHealing of AIDS held on the 1stweek of March of each year, andincludes speakers and sometimestesting. Easter baskets and/or gift cardsare provided for children. 8. Back to school gift cards! Clothing, uniforms and school supplies are provided forchildren. The distributions are given at a picnic,designed just for the children, usually held in August ata local park. 9. World AIDS Day is observedthe 1st Sunday of December.A speaker gives educationinformation or a testimony.Testing information and/ortesting is done by one of ourlocalHIV/AIDS serviceagencies. Christmas gifts are given tochildren in partnership withProject Angel Tree, which is aprogram to provide supportto children of incarceratedparents. 10. SOME OF THE MAJOR PAST EVENTS OF THEAIDS MINISTRY INCLUDESEarvin Magic Johnson Displayed theHIV Community Forumand Health Fair was held AIDS Memorialat Brentwood Baptist Quilts in OctoberChurch sponsored by2003 andGlaxoSmithKline. December 2006.HIV Testing on a 1st Sunday in March or December;HIV Testing during youth revivals with gift tickets tolocal hip hop concerts.Dialogues, a program of Pfizer, Inc. held a health fair,HIV educational and screening featuring TLC, a hiphop group. 11. PROJECT WAITT In 1992, Brentwood developed an AIDSservices program called Project WAITT (Were AllIn This Together). Received a grant from the County to providevan transportation and to operate a foodpantry program. 12. In 1993, the Brentwood Community Foundation (BCF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit was established.Awarded a grant from the Countyto provide short-term rent,mortgage and utility assistance forpeople with HIV/AIDS. 13. In 1996, Brentwood submitted agrant application to the City ofHouston and was approved forfunding for an 18 bedtransitional living facility formen with AIDS. 14. BRENTWOOD COTTAGES 15. In 1997, the County funded Brentwood Wellness Project. We purchased a 35 foot medical mobile unit to provide medical screening services, including HIV testing. 16. In 2001, the County funded Brentwood to conduct ahousing program for HIVpositive pregnant females. PROJECT OPEN DOORS was a program of the Brentwood Community Foundation that provided temporary housing, comprehensive case management, collaborative health care and educational services for HIV positive pregnant women and infants. Services were provided before and after delivery and until the infant was six weeks of age. The purpose of the program was to enhance the quality of life for the HIV client and her newborn. 17. Project waittCurrently provides the following programs Short-term Rental Assistance Utilities Assistance (electric, gas and water) Mortgage Assistance Permanent Housing Placement 18 bed Transitional Housing (on-site living facility) Health Education Wellness Counseling Professional Counseling Nutrition Counseling Food Voucher Programs Personal Care Items Taxi Voucher Program 18. Brentwood has maintained a close workingrelationship with the City and County local healthdepartments to ensure that representation of the faithcommunity is provided on advisory committees andplanning groups. 19.
