I am very pleased to report that the Foundation has made good progress during the year. We have a very clear focus on philanthropy and are committed to increasing our grant making capability year on year.

This year we have delivered grants totalling £553,994 to voluntary groups and individuals across Berkshire despite significant reductions in statutory support and challenging economic conditions. Our commitment to developing Localgiving.com has raised over £250,000 over the last two years and highlights the increasing popularity and importance of online giving. We also delivered £41,954 of grants from The Royal Wedding Fund and created £182,170 of Jubilee Funds.

In February this year we invested £40,000 in a Social Finance Partnership focused on improving the outcomes for 1,740 disadvantaged young people aged 14 and 15; aimed at reducing the number that go on to become not in employment, education or training (NEET) at age 16. The progress to date on this initiative has been very encouraging.

We are also delighted to have secured an additional £1,400,000 in Endowment during the year that will provide money for grants in perpetuity.

The profile of the Foundation has been enhanced particularly as a result of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Garden Party at the Henley Business School in June last year with increased press and radio coverage across Berkshire.

We have recently launched a Philanthropy Fellowship for Berkshire working in collaboration with the Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Community Foundations and are currently facilitating and participating in a number of events that will result in greater cooperation between voluntary organisations in Berkshire.

Our achievements over the last year have only been possible as a result of the dedication and commitment of the Trustees and staff to whom we owe our grateful thanks.

All in all a year of good progress indeed.

Connecting people who care with causes that matter

We exist to inspire a strong generous community in Berkshire where people work in partnership to enhance the quality of local life. Our ‘Think Local Give Local’ campaign encourages people to consider supporting the fantastic voluntary groups operating in Berkshire. We provide a link between donors and philanthropists and local needs, connecting people with causes and empowering individuals and organisations to make a lasting change in their communities.

Bracknell Forest Home-Start was awarded £5,000 to support its Family Group which meets weekly during term time to help families with young children who are going through a difficult time. The group provides much needed support outside the home, which may be additional to, or instead of, support from a home-visiting volunteer.

Our impact in the community

During 2012/2013 we awarded 184 grants to local projects and 49 to individuals. With your support we apply our in-depth knowledge of the local community to award grants to a wide range of projects; targeting the funding to have the greatest impact and helping to build stronger communities and enrich lives by supporting organisations addressing the greatest need across the county.

“Funding from Berkshire Community Foundation has enabled Five A Day Market Garden to expand their educational opportunities to retired people living in Berkshire. Participants have had the opportunity to enjoy local seasonal food and increase their social networks through meeting other people with similar interests.” Pam Goddard, Project Co-ordinator, Five A Day Market Garden.

Five A Day Market Garden was awarded £4,050 to run the ‘Green Art and Green Growing’ project. The participants have attended workshops in topics such as green gardening, conservation and green art, developing long term skills and knowledge that they have been able to share with their families and friends. Additionally, the workshops have encouraged people to eat healthily and get active.

Supporting voluntary groups across the county

Berkshire Autistic Society

A grant of £9,965 from the Royal Wedding Fund was awarded to increase the number of carer visits and carer support group meetings. The funding enabled visits to124 parents in their homes offering advice, support and local information on health, schooling and handling disruptive behaviour.

“Localgiving.com has been our lifeline. Without this support network we wouldn’t exist and our community work, in particular for the elderly, would be poorer. Localgiving.com has been a vital part of our fundraising for the Handbell Ringers and we have been able to raise much needed donations through the match fund campaigns which allows us to continue our work in the community.” Meg Hostler, Finchampsted Handbell Ringers.

Working in partnership with the Berkshire Community Foundation, Localgiving.com provides local charities and community groups with online fundraising webpages, as well as the opportunity to be part of a community that supports with fundraising, enabling organisations to become more effective and sustainable. This year voluntary groups have raised £181,904 through Localgiving.com

Comic Relief Local Communities Programme

Aik Saath work with people from all communities, faiths and backgrounds to promote and encourage peace, human rights and community cohesion through peer-led education. The group was awarded £9,000 from the Comic Relief Local Communities programme to train 20 young people in the conflict resolution project which equips young people with the knowledge, skills and experiences to make a sustained positive difference in their local community.

“I have learned new skills and gained a confidence I never had before. Helping some of Slough’s most troubled young people has been a great experience for me and I am looking forward to doing more to help my community.” Adira Wazir.

SportsAble

A Maidenhead based charity that promotes awareness of disability through sport and recreational activities was awarded a total of £2,000 from the Three Fund to continue its ‘Sunday Funday’ sessions. These sessions give local disabled children and their siblings a chance to explore sport and fun and games in their own time at their own speed.

Three Counties Diamond Jubilee Garden Party

From the event Berkshire raised £182,170 for the Jubilee Fund which is inspired by Her Majesty the Queen’s dedication to community service and charity work over the past 60 years. The money raised will be used to build a better future for all who live or work in the county and will address local needs such as social isolation, exclusion and deprivation, and support activities and initiatives which benefit Berkshire communities and local individuals.

In June our President, The Hon. Mrs Bayliss JP, together with the Lord Lieutenants for the Thames Valley hosted the Queen’s Three Counties Diamond Jubilee Garden Party at Henley Business School.

Berkshire Philanthropy Fellowship

In December we hosted a Celebration of Local Philanthropy at Henley Business School. The event launched the Berkshire Philanthropy Fellowship - a network of community philanthropists set up to inspire a greater culture of philanthropy in Berkshire. The Fellowship will bring together philanthropists wanting to connect to their communities and address some of the most pressing social needs across the county. The aim is to build a stronger culture of philanthropy across the UK unlocking more resources for communities.
