2013 AnnuAl RepoRtLetterAs we look back on the past year, we are reminded how fortunate we are to serve as the community foundation for such a vibrant town. Brookline is home to many engaged and resourceful individuals and organizations that share a common resolve to address our town’s challenges and meet the needs of every neighbor. We are proud to work with you to achieve those goals.

It has been a busy and productive year here at the Brookline Community Foundation (BCF), and we are so grateful for the partners and donors who make our work possible. The response to our first Understanding Brookline report, an in-depth look at changing trends and needs in the town, has been tremendous. The findings are already informing BCF’s strategy, and we are excited to build on its success with a second Understanding Brookline report to be released this fall, which takes a deeper look at issues of poverty and social mobility in Brookline.

With the completion of BCF’s new three-year strategic plan, Brookline Forward, staff and Trustees are energized and recommitted to making Brookline a place where all residents can thrive. Through an intensive process that included a careful look at research and input from scores of partners and town leaders, we selected three areas of strategic focus: reduce and alleviate poverty through short-term emergency assistance and by fostering more pathways to long-term economic security; expand opportunities for youth during out-of-school time; and build capacity within BCF so that we can make the greatest impact today and in the future. Each of these areas will be an important guide for our fundraising, grant making and community leadership in the coming years, even as we continue to support a broad portfolio of initiatives that make Brookline a better place to live.

We feel privileged to be part of the fabric of this community – and we look forward to continued work with our donors, partners and neighbors to build a more vibrant, engaged and equitable Brookline.

Sincerely,

DEAr FrIEnDS,

Jenny AmoryExecutive Director

As our community grows and changes, we can all benefit from up-to-date information about the demographics and socioeconomic trends that define Brookline. BCF makes it a priority to examine the factors and issues that matter to our neighbors and to our shared quality of life. Through our Understanding Brookline report series, we contribute to a more accurate understanding of issues affecting Brookline and stimulate discussions that lead to creative and innovative problem solving.

In 2013, BCF distributed more than $615,000 to 18 organizations that are making a difference in Brookline. Select grantees are highlighted below. All received grants from BCF’s Unrestricted Fund except where noted.
