Bedfordshire Cricket driving and inspiring cricket Ltd SEPTEMBER 2016 Beds Under 15 players shine for Regional EPP side Three Bedfordshire Under 15 players – Alex Rennie, Fayaz Homyoon and Pat Brooke – featured heavily for the Regional Emerging Players Programme side in their victory against their Essex counterparts at Billericay CC during August. The side was a selection of the best players across Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Essex set 242 in their 50 overs, with Eversholt’s Rennie taking 3 for 43. The Regional EPP side cruised to victory by 5 wickets with Luton Town and Indian’s Homyoon scoring 90 along with Brooke of Ampthill scoring 77, sharing a partnership of 105. East Beds Shield Under 18s Competition winners Flitwick were victorious in the Under I8s knock-out competition final over Ickwell. Batting first, Ickwell made 113-6 from their 16 overs with the main scorers being Jamie Barnes, 31, and Sam Barrow, 47 not out. In reply, Flitwick passed the total with eight balls remaining and seven wickets in hand. The East Beds Charity Cricket Shield has been running for a number of years and through the evening knock- out cricket competitions it organises (including the U18s and senior competitions), it raises money for local charities and organisations. For the last few years about £4k has been distributed each year. Women’s T15 Triangular Tournament Bedfordshire’s first women’s and girls’ tournament, sponsored by Storage Essentials, recently took place involving Kempston Ladies, the Bedfordshire Under 15 Development squad and Abbots Langley Ladies. Congratulations to Kempston Ladies who won the tournament. Summer Cricket Camps success Bedfordshire Cricket, in association with Bedfordshire & Luton Crimebeat, ran three successful camps during the summer break at Biggleswade, Leighton Buzzard Town and Blunham Cricket Clubs, designed to get kids playing sport. Almost 90 children of varying ages and abilities attended the events all learning new cricketing skills and how to work as a team. Cricket Development Officer Brad Matthews said: “It was great to see so many kids wanting to play and learn about cricket. Here are some of the insights that are emerging from the analysis. Once the season is finished, the ECB will share a much fuller picture and what we need to do to act on the insight. • Cricketers want shorter formats and faster games Short, social cricket is the most attractive product for lapsed players to return Change to formats and league structures needs to go further to address players’ concerns Clear evidence that volunteer recognition drives satisfaction U19 T20 plays a key role in keeping young cricketers in the game Get the Game On is having a positive impact on games played – 3% more games played and more attempted to be played in Get the Game On leagues Club Affiliation 2016-17 Please note the new club affiliation year starts on 1 October 2016 and Affiliation Packs will be emailed out to all clubs this month. Safe Hands for Club Welfare Officers Bedfordshire Cricket will run Safe Hands Workshops for Club Welfare Officers in advance of the 2017 season as follows: Wednesday 8 March 2017 for New Club Welfare Officers Wednesday 22 March 2017 for Refreshers Both courses will take place at Bedford College 6.30pm to 9.30pm. The competition, sponsored by Viegli – a specialist telecoms company based in Bedfordshire and Kent – was played in 4 regional zones throughout the summer months, culminating in the Finals Day on Sunday 4 September at Dunstable Town Cricket Club. The semi- final matches were Dunstable CC v Flitwick CC (won by Dunstable by 33 runs) and Southill Park CC v Thurleigh CC (won by Southill Park by 82 runs). The Dunstable Town v Southill Park final didn’t disappoint with the innings closing on 100-8 and a victory margin of 45 runs. The winners will receive prize money of £1000, with £500 to the runners-up and £250 to the semi-finalists. Steve Cobb, Bedfordshire Cricket’s Director of Operations, said: “Who would have thought that in just three years we would have a Finals Day with coloured clothing, pink balls, black sight screens, flashing bails and music? Thanks to the generous support of Viegli; not only do they support this competition, they also provide funding to bring youth cricket to the community. Despite a wet June, the sides have enjoyed plenty of cricket with some good results; one of the highlights being the Under 17s winning their County Championship league for the second time in three seasons. The Under 15s also performed exceptionally well, finishing third in a tough A division. All other sides saw successes during the season and all age groups enjoyed their tours and festivals at various locations around the country. Individual highlights included centuries from: Hayden Melly – 100* Patrick Brooke – 114 Daniel Clarke – 102* v London Schools Danyaal Malik – 104 v Cleveland And 5+ wicket hauls from: Liam Everitt – 7 for 64 v Herefordshire Harry McBrearty – 5 for 9 v Oxfordshire Ali-Ul Haq – 5 for 36 v Northamptonshire Jason George – 5 for 47 v Shropshire Well done to all the players involved with this season’s success and many thanks to all those managers, coaches, umpires, scorers, tea makers, clubs, parents and everyone else involved that have made the season possible. Umpire and scorer courses If you are interested in becoming an umpire and/or a scorer, the Bedfordshire Association of Cricket Officials is planning winter training. There will be two first-level (UL1) umpire courses (each sixteen hours): three all-day Sundays, September 18, 25 and October 2 in Luton, and eight Wednesday evenings between January 18 and March 22 in Bedford. ECB City Cup Competition – Luton progress to semis Congratulations to the Luton Select XI who recently played Leicester in the National Quarter Final and came out on top in a thrilling game, winning by 5 wickets. The competition offers promising local cricketers the opportunity to begin a fast-track career to the professional game and the best player in the national competition will be awarded a contract with the MCC Young Cricketers. Next Luton will play Cardiff in the National Semi Final at Dunstable Town CC on Sunday 11 September (11.30am start), where the boys will be hoping to defend their national title. The other Semi Final is between Leicester and South London. Well done to the team and good luck for Sunday! Pictured: Luton Select XI NatWest U19 Club T20 Regional Finals Day The NatWest U19 Club T20 competition returned this year, with over 600 clubs across England and Wales taking part. This vibrant competition lets young players take ownership in their club to create the cricketing experience they want – playing with their friends, fast lively matches, a great social atmosphere and a chance to make the club look and feel different for one night a week. Bedfordshire teams took part in two divisions: Cambs/Hunts/Beds (Blunham, Clifton, Southill Park, Eaton Socon and Royston Cricket Clubs) and Beds/Milton Keynes (Elstow, Leighton Buzzard Town, Great Brickhill and Stony Stratford Cricket Clubs). The clubs played each other twice (home and away) to fight it out for a place in the county finals at Eaton Socon CC on Sunday 11 September 10am start. The teams that have made it to Finals Day are Eaton Socon, Stony Stratford and Bedfordshire’s Southill Park. Good luck to all the teams! Luton Wicketz makes a difference Wicketz Summer Camps, funded by Crimebeat, Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation’s London Luton Airport Ltd Fund and Lord’s Taverners, ran throughout the summer break and were a great success attracting lots of children from different backgrounds and walks of life. The children enjoyed plenty of cricket in the sunshine and a few visitors along the way including High Sheriff of Bedfordshire Charles Whitbread, who showed off his fine wicket keeping skills and Lord’s Taverners, who interviewed some of the children (go to: http://www.lordstaverners.org/news/501/wicketz-luton-cc- coaches-receive-high-praise-from-parents). Some of the Luton Wicketz attendees were fortunate enough to spend a few days at Felsted School in Essex for cricket training, other activities including rugby, football, a spoken word and personal development workshop and a fantastic tournament on the final day. Two of the Luton boys Abdus Salaam and Reece Hales won awards for the spirit of cricket and best newcomer to the festival. The summer season finished with a match between the three Luton Wicketz hubs at Lower Wardown, which went to the last ball with the Luton Rebels beating Ultimate United CC (names chosen by the kids!). There was big hitting, great bowling and some unbelievable fielding in the first of a number tournaments and matches we hope to run in the coming months. During the autumn, Wicketz will be moving to indoor venues so look out for these online and through leaflets in schools around Luton. Bedfordshire Young Cricketers County Trials COMING SOON Thoughts quickly turn to the 2017 season with trials for the county age groups taking place during the autumn. Requests for nominations to trial for our county age group squads have gone out to all clubs and schools within the county. Those players nominated will have received or will shortly be receiving some details on how to take up a trial place. This will come via email so please keep an eye out if you know that you have been put forward by your club or school. If there are any questions regarding the trials process, please contact [email protected]. The Bedfordshire Cricket Academy delivers specialist coaching, training and skills to aspiring cricketers. It offers one-to-one coaching sessions, master classes and skills development sessions. All sessions take place at Bedford College Sports Hall and are run by fully qualified ECB coaches. Bookings now being taken – call 01234 291823. ONE-TO-ONE COACHING SESSIONS Running on Monday evenings 7.30–9pm from 3 October to 28 November, Thursday evenings 6–9pm from 6 October to 10 November and during the half term break on Monday 24 October and Tuesday 25 October 9am–5pm. More sessions will run starting in February 2017. The 40-minute sessions are open to all ages and costs are: one session £32, 2 for £60, 3 for £88, 4 for £116 or 5 for £144. MASTER CLASSES Junior cricket coaching master classes will run from Wednesday 26 to Friday 28 October 2016 (half term) AND Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 February 2017 (half term) 9.30am-4pm for boys and girls from school years 4 to 7 inclusive. Activities will include: the basics of batting and bowling; developing power into your cricket shots; developing pace and spin into your bowling; and taking part in an indoor tournament. The cost is £110 for the 3 days (with £5 sibling discount). CRICKET SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS A course of 8 sessions for 9 to 13-year-olds will run on Monday evenings 6-7.30pm from 3 October to 28 November. Sessions are: The All- rounder; Facing the Fast Men – Playing Pace; Spin it to win it & the Need for Speed Bowling; The Gun Fielder – developing your fielding skills; Mastering Mystery – Facing Spin; Spin it to Win it & the Need for Speed – The Sequel; The Athletic Cricketer; T20 Talents. Southill Park win Viegli Bedfordshire T20 CompetitionCongratulations to Southill Park Cricket Club who are winners of the 2016 Viegli Bedfordshire T20 Competition. Bedfordshire Young Cricketers County Trials COMING SOONThoughts quickly turn to the 2017 season with trials for the county age groups taking place during the autumn. Requests for nominations to trial for our county age group squads have gone out to all clubs and schools within the county. Those players nominated will have received or will shortly be receiving some details on how to take up a trial place. This will come via email so please keep an eye out if you know that you have been put forward by your club or school. The Bedfordshire Cricket Academy delivers specialist coaching, training and skills to aspiring cricketers. It o� ers one-to-one coaching sessions, master classes and skills development sessions. All sessions take place at Bedford College Sports Hall and are run by fully qualifi ed ECB coaches. Bookings now being taken – call 01234 291823.

ONE-TO-ONE COACHING SESSIONS

Running on Monday evenings 7.30–9pm from 3 October to 28 November, Thursday evenings 6–9pm from 6 October to 10 November and during the half term break on Monday 24 October and Tuesday 25 October 9am–5pm. More sessions will run starting in February 2017. The 40-minute sessions are open to all ages and costs are: one session £32, 2 for £60, 3 for £88, 4 for £116 or 5 for £144.

MASTER CLASSES

Junior cricket coaching master classes will run from Wednesday 26 to Friday 28 October 2016 (half term) AND Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 February 2017 (half term) 9.30am-4pm for boys and girls from school years 4 to 7 inclusive. Activities will include: the basics of batting and bowling; developing power into your cricket shots; developing pace and spin into your bowling; and taking part in an indoor tournament. The cost is £110 for the 3 days (with £5 sibling discount).

CRICKET SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS

A course of 8 sessions for 9 to 13-year-olds will run on Monday evenings 6-7.30pm from 3 October to 28 November. Sessions are: The All-rounder; Facing the Fast Men – Playing Pace; Spin it to win it & the Need for Speed Bowling; The Gun Fielder – developing your fi elding skills; Mastering Mystery – Facing Spin; Spin it to Win it & the Need for Speed – The Sequel; The Athletic Cricketer; T20 Talents.
