BDA MOCK GENERAL ELECTION 2015

Last week, we mentioned how the academy was going to be running our own version of the general elections, mimicking the current political status of the country.

Yesterday, the BDA elections took place and an incredible 192 pupils took part in placing their votes. The results were as follows:

It was a proud moment to see so many young children that are genuinely interested in the status of the country and economy, and it proves that politics is just as important to our younger generation.

A special mention must be given to Year 9 students who accounted for 39% of our electorate (far more than any other year group).

National Party No. of Votes

Percentage of Votes

Labour 114 59%

Conservatives 31 16%

Liberal Democrats

14 7%

UKIP 25 13%

Spoilt 8 4%

*** IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT *** The Primary school construction is now underway, and as such, there will be no

pedestrian or vehicle access via Du Cane road. ALL STUDENTS AND VISITORS MUST USE THE MAIN ENTRANCE VIA WOOD LANE.

OXBRIDGE PROJECT UPDATE

Newsletter 8th May 2015

Is HIV The Most Dangerous Disease Of The 21st Century?

At this week’s Oxbridge Project we had a visitor called Ben Ives talk to us about a number of diseases, the main one being HIV. He taught us about how it spreads; who has it; and how some people are immune to it.

We were taught that in England there are around 100,000 people diagnosed with HIV, and judging by the amount of recorded

diagnostics, 20,000 of those don't know they have it. But, in a country called Swaziland, almost a quarter of the population are reported to have HIV. It is not very infectious, as it can't be spread in many ways, but it can be spread by sexual intercourse, blood transfer (including during birth) and infected needles.

Some people are immune to HIV. This is due to them having an incredibly high immune system, so their white blood cells are more

equipped than most people. It was said that in the future, it could be possible to use this in order to create something like a vaccine, to help cure HIV. HIV is such a big issue as it mutates its antigens on a regular and fast basis, meaning it is much harder to put an exact antibody in to stop it

Overall it was a very interesting lecture. I hope to learn more about it in the future.

There are only two weeks left of term so it’s great to see that over seventy students have already reached their target for Accelerated Reader while also reading some excellent books. If you have an AR target that you have not yet reached, remember that you can be doing quizzes before and after school and at break and

lunch times. Also, if you have recently finished a book that you loved, please let us know. Your recommendations are really useful and we can pass them on to other students!

In addition to completing AR quizzes, many students have been using the library after school to complete some excellent homework. It is great to see students making full use of the resources available and getting some additional help with homework. The library is open to all students after school and it is a really good

space for concentrating and getting some work done!

As well as a space for completing homework, the library is also used for a number of different clubs. For example, last week saw the return of Manga Club with students drawing their favourite Manga characters and designing their own heroes! There are a number of examples of these excellent drawings on display in the main library. If you would like to join Manga Club or have a picture for the wall, let a librarian know!

Finally, next week will see the return of Craft Club. Last term students made some fantastic creations from Mother’s Day cards to felt animals! The club is open to all and takes place after school on Wednesdays.

Stardust by Neil Gaiman

I know everyone is familiar with the film, and it was pretty true to the story. But Neil Gaiman's writing is so witty, and really captures the characters and plot, that it's well worth reading this even if you have seen the film.

In a slightly off-centre Victorian era, Tristran Thorn is brought up in Wall, right next to the Faerie world. He dreams of adventure, and when he commits to bringing back a fallen star to win the love of the aloof Victoria, he must venture into the Faerie realm. However, the star is not exactly the lump of

cold rock he was expecting, and bringing the beautiful Yvaine back to Wall may prove trickier than he expected.

Full of humour, adventure and wicked witches, this is a twist of the fairy tale genre you won't be able to put down! If you enjoyed the film, you will love the book – and if you like a good, twisty fairy-tale you’ll be hooked. Also, look out for a review of Poison by Chris Wooding – another dark fairy tale that will really get you thinking.

BDA SPORTS

Israel Awolaja from the academy was the Runner Up of the Milton Keynes 2 stars on

the U\15s boys Competitions. He lost after a nail-biting battle in the finals against England number 8 (2-3 ). His performance during the tournaments was exceptional and we are extremely pleased with his progress.

He also achieved 3rd position in the U\16 narrowly being defeated by 3-2 against England’s number 5 . Israel has been showing a very steady progression this year and we have no doubts that he is going to do really well next season when he becomes a junior player.

On the 5th of May, the female touch rugby team that consisted of 9 players had their second match against Year 8 girls from Hammersmith Academy.

The girls played extremely well with a tie of 3-3. The tries scored by three players; Zainab, Rita and Samara. However, the opposing team were able to squeeze past the defence to even the score.

To sum up, the team worked hard during their peripatetic sessions and operated their positions on the field with skill and great communication. Well done girls!
