This past weekend, College Park celebrated city volunteers with a dinner at the UMD Golf Club House. The evening was filled with great community networking, appreciation, and dancing. The residents on our city boards and commissions give so much back to our communities. Many thanks to all of you who give of your time in the city, local schools, and churches. If you’re interested in

volunteering with a city board or commission, please contact me or Monroe to be nominated. Councilman……………. Continued from p1

I do regret that inconvenience of the sidewalk being shut down outside of the Cambria/CVS development. Please use the Trolley Trail and/or cross at signalized intersections to get around the area. City staff continues to communicate with the developer about reopening this area for pedestrians…

June marks the start of the council’s modified summer schedule. We’ll be meeting two times each month instead of our regular four meetings from now through August. We have a number of items we’ll be covering…

In June, the council will review the County’s Nuisance Abatement Board, meet with the Candidates’ Debate Workgroup in anticipation of

election season this Fall, discuss the event coordination and budget for College Park Day, discuss actions the city can take in response to the feedback from the City Survey, and review municipal voting right for non-citizen residents. In July, we’ll be discussing election related issues – staggered or longer terms, at-large districts, and a plan to start looking at redistricting and issues/fees

related to bulk trash pick-ups. There is a lot of great events and happenings in the city over the summer. Nick and I recommend checking out the National Orchestral Institute at The Clarice. Talented young musicians from across the country have convened at the University to put on a number of performances throughout June that match the caliber of professional orchestras. Visit http://theclarice.umd.edu/ for more information.

And don’t forget to visit our city farmers markets. The Hollywood Farmers Market occurs on Saturdays from 9AM. to 1PM at the Hollywood Shopping Center on Rhode Island Avenue in College Park. The Downtown Farmers Market occurs on Sundays from 10AM to 2PM in the City Hall parking lot located at 4500 Knox Road in College Park. Both

markets will run through November. To stay up-to-

date with farmers market information, please follow the City’s Facebook and Twitter pages and sign up for the City’s emails at www.collegeparkmd.gov/cpconnect. UMD also has a great Farmers Market on Wednesday from 11AM - 2PM in front of the Stamp Student Union. From May 27 through August 20, 2017, the Downtown College Park Garage and the City Hall Lot

will offer free parking Monday through Friday after 5pm and all-day on Saturdays and Sundays. There are quite a few new restaurants and businesses in the Downtown area, you may find a new favorite hangout! So try a new restaurant or visit a new store during these free parking summer weekends and nights in Downtown College Park! Interested in free group tennis lessons at a 1st class

facility? Session Dates (Adult and Junior) will be held June 10 - 25, July 1 - 16, and July 29 - August 13. For more information or to sign up, please visit: http://www.collegeparkmd.gov/people_we_serve/tennis.php Enjoy your summer! If you need anything from me during this time, don’t hesitate to call or email.

Nick Brennan [email protected] 202-597-1291 June BDCA Neighborhood Watch Article

As we head into vacation season, it’s a good time to remind ourselves that the risk of being burglarized can be greatly reduced by taking simple steps to make our homes more difficult to enter and less enticing to would-be burglars. Remember, the greatest weapons in the fight to prevent burglaries are light, time and noise.

• Make your home look occupied, and make it

difficult to break in. • Lock all outside doors and windows before

you leave the house or go to bed. Even if it is for a short time, lock your doors.

Neighborhood Watch . . . . Continued from p2

• Leave lights on when you go out. If you are

going to be away for a length of time, connect some lamps to automatic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day.

• Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers or flyers build up while you are away. Arrange with the Post Office to hold

your mail, or arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them regularly.

• Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are going away for an extended time.

• Check your locks on doors and windows and replace them with secure devices as necessary.

• Pushbutton locks on doorknobs are easy for burglars to open. Install deadbolt locks on

all your outside doors. • Sliding glass doors are vulnerable. Special

locks are available for better security. • Other windows may need better locks.

Check with a locksmith or hardware store for alternatives.

• Have adequate exterior lighting. A motion-sensitive light is recommended for backyards.

• Trim trees and shrubs so that they cannot be used as hiding places for intruders.

• Make sure your door hinges are on the inside.

There have been additional incidences of people rummaging through unlocked vehicles - please remembers to lock your car at all times and remove any valuables. As always, report any suspicious

behavior or criminal activity to 9-1-1 or the non-emergency line, 301-352-1200. Lastly, please save the date for Berwyn’s 2016 National Night Out event – Tuesday, August 2! More details to follow!

ALLOCATION OF MARKETS

If you've been told one certain agent is the only agent that handles all sales in a community or area - THIS IS NOT TRUE! In fact, this is a violation of Anti Trust and

Strictly ILLEGAL! Why? Because it restricts competition and is BAD FOR THE

CONSUMER. Don't let an agent tell you they are the only agent in Anytown, USA.

BUY A HOUSE AND THE STATE PAYS OFF YOUR STUDENT LOANS

Do you know if you buy an owner occupied home under a specific program, the state will pay off your student loans?
