Project 1: HEvsHP

Objective: Compare design and performance of lithium-ion cell designed

for energy and one designed for power.

Approach:

– Use 18650 size cells

– Show GUI tree structure of cell design

– Run simulations of discharge at 1 to 20 Amperes

– Compare energy delivered at different currents

– Compare cell designs

Key Points

– Can estimate power capability of cells based on physics models

– BDS provides helpful tools

• Database of formulations

Project 2: CompareChem

Objective: Examine the effect of cell chemistry (positive and negative

active materials) on energy of cell.

Approach:

– Use 18650 size cells

– Run simulations of discharge at 0.1 Amperes (low current to maximize

energy)

– Compare energy delivered by different cells

Key Points

– Energy of a given cell chemistry can be estimated based on materials, even

materials that are not yet practical

– Important to consider full cell when evaluating improved materials

Project 3: CellShape

Objective: Examine the effect of cell design (spiral cylindrical and

prismatic, and stacked plate) on thermal behavior.

Approach:

– Fix capacity at ~1.9 Ah

– Run simulations of discharge at 2 Amperes

– Compare capacity and temperature of cells

Key Points

– All major cell designs can be developed using BDS

– Demonstrate wound and stack designs
