CHACON GETTING PRESEASON LOVEJunior Alaina Chacon has been shown a lot of preseason love, getting named a preseason All-American by both Volleyballmag.com and CollegeBeachVB.com. Chacon was named a second-team All-American by Volleyballmag.com and a first-team All-American by DiG Magazine with Madison Fitzpatrick in 2019.

PRESEASON ALL-CCSA DOMINANCEFor the first time in program history, the Seminoles placed five student-athletes on the preseason All-CCSA Team. Sara Putt was placed on the team for the second time, while Molly McBain, Alaina Chacon, Madison Fitzpatrick and Kate Privett all earned their first career preseason All-CCSA honors. Putt became the fourth Seminole to have multiple preseason All-CCSA recognitions, joining Brooke Kuhlman, Vanessa Freire and Tory Paranagua.

OPENING WEEKEND UNDER NILESFlorida State has never lost its first match of the season. Since head coach Brooke Niles came to FSU in 2016, the Seminoles have not seen worse than a 4-0 start to the season, with a program-best 14-0 start in 2016. FSU will face four ranked opponents in its season-opening tournament for the second year in a row this year. Florida State is 22-3 all-time in the opening week of the season.Year Season-starting win streak Head Coach

BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK CCSA CHAMPIONSFSU earned its fourth-straight CCSA title in 2019 after going 5-0 in the tournament. The team was the model of efficiency during the conference championship run on its way to the 2019 title, dropping only two flights of 23 over the weekend. Florida State is the only program in NCAA beach volleyball history to have four straight conference championships. Not only is FSU undefeated in the CCSA Tournament, the Garnet and Gold hadn’t dropped a single match to a conference opponent – or any East Coast team – from 2016 to 2018.

2018 NCAA NATIONAL RUNNERS-UPFlorida State saw its most productive postseason in program history in 2019, as the team went 3-1 at the NCAA Championship to reach the finals through the winner’s bracket. FSU beat USC, UCLA and Hawaii to face the Bruins for a second time in the championship match. The Seminoles became the first team to hand USC a loss in the NCAA Championship and the first No. 4 seed to defeat a No. 1-overall seed (UCLA) in the tournament. Their wins over UCLA in the second round and Hawaii in the semifinals snapped 31- and 32- match win streaks for those teams, respectively.

INDOOR PLAYERS OUTSIDENew to the sand this year is Jasmyn Martin, she joins Payton Caffrey and Morgan Chacon as one of three FSU indoor players to also play beach volleyball. Martin was All-ACC Second Team in her first year at Florida State. She was third on the team with 206 kills and 80 blocks. Martin Transferred from Minnesota where she played for two seasons. Caffrey made an instant impact in the sand a season ago, leading the team with 31 wins, while being named the pair of the Tournament during the CCSA Championship.

All-Time FSU Beach and Indoor Players: Christina Ambrose, Sarah Burrington, Payton Caffrey, Morgan Chacon, Visnja Djurdjevic, Katie Horton, Jasmyn Martin, Katie Mosher, Milica Kubura, Hailey Luke, Danielle Pennington, Jekaterina Stepanova, Sarah Wickstrom, Cecilie Woie, Fatma Yilidrim, Marija Milosavljevic, Amanda Saxton, Aurora Davis, Olivera Medic.

SISTER-SISTERFreshman Morgan Chacon joins her sister, sophomore Alaina Chacon on the beach team for the second straight season. This year they are joined by another pair of sisters, Maddie and Cassie Anderson. They become the fourth pair of sisters to play on the team in the same season (Kristina and Stephanie Pellitteri in 2013, Nina Pellitteri and Stephanie Pellitteri in 2014). Redshirt Freshman Kiora Sanchez followed in her sister’s footsteps by coming to FSU a season ago. Sierra Sanchez played for four years and graduated in 2017, earning a 55-23 dual match record (71-33 overall), good for the tenth-most dual match wins in program history.

Entering her fifth season with the program, head coach Brooke Niles has shaped Florida State beach volleyball into one of the most elite teams in the country, establishing the Seminoles as a national contender every year and a fixture in the AVCA Beach Top-10.

Niles came to FSU prior to the 2016 season, and had previously coached at the collegiate, junior college, club and high school levels working with both indoor and sand volleyball teams.

In 2016, Niles led the Seminoles to unprecedented heights during the program’s first season as an official NCAA Championship sport. Her first year in Tallahassee was highlighted by a series of program firsts including a school-record for dual-match victories (32), a conference championship, the top-seed in the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship and a national runner-up finish. Florida State hit the ground running under Niles, winning its first 14 matches, all on the road, with eight of those victories coming against ranked foes including five ranked in the top-10. One of those wins came against then-No. 2 Southern California in Los Angeles as the Seminoles snapped the Women of Troy’s 19-match home win streak. FSU went on to earn the No. 1 overall seed at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship after claiming the 2016 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Conference title. The Seminoles finished the 2016 campaign as the national runner-up at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. after posting a 3-2 record at the tournament. FSU went on to set the single-season school record for victories in a season with 32 and ranked in the Top 5 of the AVCA national poll all year. Along with their 14-match win streak, the Seminoles also put together a school-record 17-match win streak which saw Florida State outscore the opposition 71-10. At season’s end, Florida State registered 19 victories over ranked schools, while posting an 11-3 mark against teams ranked in the Top 10. In her second year under the helm Niles continued the winning tradition of Florida State beach volleyball. The team finished with the second-most wins in school history and the third most in the country (29). Niles and the Noles secured back-to-back CCSA Championships after they defeated FIU 3-0 in 34 minutes. Florida State reached their second consecutive NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship appearance and sixth straight post season appearance, tied for most of any school. The Seminoles finished the 2017 season in fourth place at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shore, Ala. after going 2-2 at the tournament. The Noles defeated a school record 22 ranked teams during the 2017 season, including 13 wins over top-10 teams and three over top-5 teams. The 2017 season saw the Garnet and Gold defeat Pepperdine for the first time in school history as they took down the second-ranked wave in Tallahassee. Niles set the bar even higher in her third season, scheduling 13 dual matches against ranked opponents in the regular season and finishing with a program-record 33 wins. Florida State reached its third consecutive NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship appearance, and seventh-straight postseason appearance, making FSU one of only two programs to make every NCAA and AVCA National Championship (along with Pepperdine). The Seminoles went undefeated to make it to the finals of the NCAA Championship for the first time, taking down No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Hawaii and No. 5 USC along the way. FSU fell to No. 1-overall UCLA in the finals for the team’s second NCAA Runner-Up finish under Niles. FSU tallied 14 wins against AVCA Top-20 opponents in 2018, picking up four wins against higher-ranked teams. Through her three seasons at the helm, the Seminoles have remained undefeated against every East Coast team, and have not lost to a CCSA team since joining the conference in Niles’ first year. Niles was recognized for her outstanding effort in her first season at the helm of the Seminole beach volleyball program as she was named National Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Niles had continued success, finishing the 2019 season with another 29 wins. The Seminoles reached their fourth consecutive NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship, and eighth-straight postseason trip, keeping the Seminoles as one of just two teams to do so (Pepperdine). Florida State also won their fourth-straight CCSA Championship Title as they dominated the competi-tion and capped it off with a 3-0 win over LSU in the championship match. Florida State earned a win in the first round of the NCAA Championship with a 3-0 win over Cal Poly, before losing their next two matches to the top two seeds, UCLA and USC.Florida State earned a program-high 21 wins over ranked opponents, picking up 12 wins over teams in the AVCA Top-10. Niles earned her first career CCSA Coach of the Year award as the Seminoles saw two more join the CCSA All-Conference team and Macy Jerger earned CCSA Scholar-athlete of the Year honors for the third straight season. Kate Privett became the third Seminole to earn CCSA Freshman of the Year honors.
