50 YEARS OF WOMEN’S INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICSFlorida State is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics throughout the 2018-19 season. In-door volleyball was the first women’s intercollegiate sport at FSU, taking the floor in 1968, while beach volleyball became Florida State’s newest varsity sport in 2012. More informa-tion on events and reunions will be posted on www.seminoles.com/50th.

SEMINOLES IN SEASON OPENERSFlorida State has never lost its first match of the season. Since head coach Brooke Niles came to FSU in 2016, the Semi-noles have not seen worse than a 4-0 start to the season, with a program-best 14-0 start in 2016. FSU will face four ranked opponents in its season-opening tournament for the second year in a row this year. Year Season-starting win streak Head Coach

BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK CCSA CHAMPIONSFSU earned its third-straight CCSA title in 2018 after going 6-0 in the tournament. The team saw its most efficient confer-ence championship run on its way to the 2018 title, dropping only one flight of 28 over the weekend. Florida State is one of only three programs in NCAA beach volleyball history to have won three straight conference championships (along with Pepperdine and Hawaii). All three of those teams have now gone undefeated in their respective conference tournaments since 2016. Not only is FSU undefeated in the CCSA Tourna-ment, the Garnet and Gold hadn’t dropped a single match to a conference opponent – or any East Coast team – from 2016 to 2018.

2018 NCAA NATIONAL RUNNERS-UPFlorida State saw its most productive postseason in program history in 2019, as the team went 3-1 at the NCAA Champi-onship to reach the finals through the winner’s bracket. FSU beat USC, UCLA and Hawaii to face the Bruins for a second time in the championship match. The Seminoles became the first team to hand USC a loss in the NCAA Championship and the first No. 4 seed to defeat a No. 1-overall seed (UCLA) in the tournament. Their wins over UCLA in the second round and Ha-waii in the semifinals snapped 31- and 32- match win streaks for those teams, respectively.

INDOOR PLAYERS OUTSIDENew to the sand this year are Payton Caffrey and Morgan Chacon, two of FSU’s newest indoor volleyball players in the 2018 fall season. Caffrey, a transfer from West Virginia, was named the ACC Player of the Year, AVCA East Region Player of the Year and an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention in her first season. An outside hitter from Indiana, Chacon spent a majority of the fall season with an injury but helped the Semi-noles pick up two three-set wins over Florida A&M and TCU. All-Time FSU Beach and Indoor Players: Christina Ambrose, Sarah Burr-ington, Payton Caffrey, Morgan Chacon, Visnja Djurdjevic, Katie Horton, Katie Mosher, Milica Kubura, Hailey Luke, Danielle Pennington, Jekaterina Stepanova, Sarah Wickstrom, Cecilie Woie, Fatma Yilidrim, Marija Milosav-ljevic, Amanda Saxton, Aurora Davis, Olivera Medic.

SISTER-SISTERFreshman Morgan Chacon joins her sister, sophomore Alaina Chacon on the beach team this season. They become the third pair of sisters to play on the team in the same season (Kristi-na and Stephanie Pellitteri in 2013, Nina Pellitteri and Stepha-nie Pellitteri in 2014). Freshman Kiora Sanchez follows in her sister’s footsteps by coming to FSU. Sierra Sanchez played for four years and graduated in 2017, earning a 55-23 dual match record (71-33 overall), good for the tenth-most dual match wins in program history.

COAST-TO-COASTGraduate transfer Payton Rund joins the Seminoles from Saint Mary’s College in California. An Oregon native, Rund is now nearly 3,000 miles away from her hometown (Albany). With the Gaels, Rund and her partner Lindsay Knudsen -- coached by current FSU assistant coach Angela Rock -- beat USC’s No. 1 pair of Kelly Claes and Sarah Hughes in 2017, snap-ping their 103-match win streak.

FRESHMAN STANDOUTSAll six of this season’s freshmen came to FSU as some of the top recruits in their class. Kate Privett was named an AVCA High School Beach All-American First Team honoree last fall, while her teammates, Jenna Johnson, Morgan Kuchar and Lexi McKeown were all Second Team selections. FSU and UCLA were the only teams with four players on both the First and Second Teams.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES

WEEK-BY-WEEK RANKINGS

PRESEASON RANKINGS: After finishing as the National Runners-Up in 2018, FSU started the 2019 season ranked third in the AVCA Coaches Poll and fourth in the DiG Magazine Poll.

CCSA PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: For the third straight year, FSU had the most players represented on the conference preseason team. Senior Brooke Kuhlman became the third Seminole to garner multiple CCSA preseason honors, while Sara Putt, Molly McBain and Macy Jerger joined her on the list. Freshman Kate Privett was named to the Watch list.

OPENING WEEKEND - STATE CAPITOL INVITATIONAL: FSU opened the season at home for the first time this year, hosting Tampa along with four ranked teams -- Tulane, Cal Poly and LSU. The Seminoles earned four wins over the weekend, three of which were ranked. FSU earned its first conference loss in program history to LSU in its final match of the first day.

FAU’S BEACH BURROW BASH: The Seminoles went 4-0 in Boca Raton, earning four conference wins and three ranked wins by taking down UAB, No. 4 LSU, No. 10 South Carolina and No. 18 FAU. They were the only team in the conference to go undefeated that weekend, a performance that bumped them back up to No. 4 in both the AVCA and DiG Magazine Polls.

CCSA PAIR OF THE WEEK: Following their 4-0 performance at the Beach Burrow Bash, sophomores Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick were named the CCSA Pair of the Week on March 6. They started off the weekend with a win at the No. 1 position against UAB and went on as the only Seminoles to pick up four wins as they beat LSU, South Carolina and FAU pairs at the No. 2 position.

CALIFORNIA TRIP: Florida State went 3-3 during their trip out west to California. The Seminoles lost a tough one to No. 2 USC to begin the trip but bounced back to defeat No. 8 Long Beach State. During the East Meets West Invitational the Seminoles went 2-2. On the opening day of the East meets West Invitational the Garnet and Gold went a perfect 2-0 defeating No. 3 Pepperdine for the second time in school history and No. 5 Hawaii.

CONFERENCE ACCOLADES CONTINUE TO PILE: Redshirt junior Sara Putt and ju-nior Payton Caffrey earned CCSA Co-Pair of the Week honors for their dominant performance in California. The two went 5-0 at the No. 4 position, helping the Seminoles go 3-3 in the third week of the season.

Entering her fourth season with the program, head coach Brooke Niles has shaped Florida State beach volleyball into one of the most elite teams in the country, establishing the Seminoles as a national contender every year and a fixture in the AVCA Beach Top-20. Niles came to FSU prior to the 2016 season, and had previously coached at the collegiate, junior college, club and high school levels working with both indoor and sand volleyball teams. In 2016, Niles led the Seminoles to unprecedented heights during the pro-gram’s first season as an official NCAA Championship sport. Her first year in Tal-lahassee was highlighted by a series of program firsts including a school-record for dual-match victories (32), a conference championship, the top-seed in the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship and a national runner-up finish. Florida State hit the ground running under Niles, winning its first 14

matches, all on the road, with eight of those victories coming against ranked foes including five ranked in the top-10. One of those wins came against then-No. 2 South-ern California in Los Angeles as the Seminoles snapped the Women of Troy’s 19-match home win streak. FSU went on to earn the No. 1 overall seed at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship after claiming the 2016 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Conference title. The Seminoles finished the 2016 campaign as the national runner-up at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. after posting a 3-2 record at the tournament. FSU went on to set the single-season school record for victories in a season with 32 and ranked in the Top 5 of the AVCA national poll all year. Along with their 14-match win streak, the Seminoles also put together a school-record 17-match win streak which saw Florida State outscore the opposition 71-10. At season’s end, Florida State registered 19 victories over ranked schools, while posting an 11-3 mark against teams ranked in the Top 10. In her second year under the helm Niles continued the winning tradition of Florida State beach volleyball. The team finished with the second-most wins in school history and the third most in the country (29). Niles and the Noles secured back-to-back CCSA Championships after they defeated FIU 3-0 in 34 minutes. Florida State reached their second consecutive NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship appearance and sixth straight post season appearance, tied for most of any school. The Seminoles finished the 2017 season in fourth place at the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shore, Ala. after going 2-2 at the tournament. The Noles defeated a school record 22 ranked teams during the 2017 season, including 13 wins over top-10 teams and three over top-5 teams. The 2017 season saw the Garnet and Gold defeat Pepperdine for the first time in school history as they took down the second-ranked wave in Tallahassee. Niles set the bar even higher in her third season, scheduling 13 dual matches against ranked opponents in the regular season and finishing with a program-record 33 wins. Florida State reached its third consecutive NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship appearance, and seventh-straight postseason appearance, making FSU one of only two programs to make every NCAA and AVCA National Championship (along with Pepperdine). The Seminoles went undefeated to make it to the finals of the NCAA Championship for the first time, taking down No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Hawaii and No. 5 USC along the way. FSU fell to No. 1-overall UCLA in the finals for the team’s second NCAA Runner-Up finish under Niles. FSU tallied 14 wins against AVCA Top-20 opponents in 2018, picking up four wins against higher-ranked teams. Through her three seasons at the helm, the Seminoles have remained undefeated against every East Coast team, and have not lost to a CCSA team since joining the conference in Niles’ first year. Niles was recognized for her outstanding effort in her first season at the helm of the Seminole beach volleyball program as she was named National Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
