Hello there...

The chaos of the summer crowd begins to roll away in August. Schools are back in session and another sum-mer has gone by way too fast. However, August events on the Coast such as the Phish concert at The Wharf, the Flora-Bama’s Sandstock and Thunder on the Gulf keep the area smiling even as the summer visitors return home. It’s been another successful summer on the beach, and luckily, the summer season lasts a little longer here.

EXPERIENCESharky's family adventures

S ince its opening in March of this year, Sharky's at The Wharf has attracted guests from all over to par-ticipate in a variety of fun activities for the whole family.

“Sharky's is an attraction entire families or groups can experience together, and The Wharf is home to many family leisure and entertainment businesses,” said Lori Gunthorp, marketing director for Sharky's. “People of all ages come to The Wharf to enjoy the variety of options available, and Sharky’s brings an exciting, adventurous addition to the fun atmosphere The Wharf currently pro-vides.”

Miniature golf, a ropes course and a Sky Trail are of-fered at the course. The Sky Trail ropes courses and Sky Rail elements are custom built and unique to Sharky’s, as is the mini-golf course.

“We hope to see Sharky’s Family Adventure Park con-tinue to be an adventure destination at The Wharf for tourists and residents alike,” Gunthorp said. “Sharky’s is the perfect location to host birthday parties, family gatherings and class trips. It's a great place for families, coworkers or friends to experience something unique and challenging together.”

Features:Sharky’s Family Adventure Park features two Sky Trail adven-ture high ropes courses with four Sky Rail zip line connections, a Sky Tykes ropes course for children ages 2-7, and 18 holes of mini-golf for the entire family ages 2 and up.

The full-size ropes courses have 46 elements, or activities that connect each pole, which participants can go through at their own pace and choose their path as they go. The Sky Rail zip lines connects the Sky Trail ropes courses. Elements include rope bridges, rope ladders, criss cross walks, cargo nets and more.

For the little ones, Sharky's offers a scaled version of the full-size course, Sky Tykes. This course has nine elements for the younger children to master and become comfortable on. Their parents or guardians can walk beside them the whole time.

Safety harnesses are available in several sizes to accommodate most heights and sizes of participants.

is fun!by theresa CorbinContributing writer

All year long, kids dream of summer days free from school time schedules. Once school finally finishes for the year, summer excitement fades quickly into tedium. And before you know it, kids are complaining about being bored or just zoned out watching TV or playing video games. Then summer disappears into fall and the kids are back in school, only to pine once again for the summertime.

Kids and parents know this cycle all too well, but families can stop this vicious cycle. Keep kids enter-tained and engaged with these boredom beating sugges-tions.

play the Flip Flop Name Game

Help your child hot glue foam letters or shapes to the bottom of their flip flops. Use their name (if your child’s name is too long, use their initials) or let them think up a short message or design. Then when they wear their shoes on the beach, they will leave their mark in the sand. This can even be fun in the back yard on a muddy day. Just make sure to hose off the shoes before the kids traipse muddy messages around the house.

Alphabet Scavenger huntFor younger kids learning the alphabet, this is a great

game to reinforce what they have learned in school and to facilitate some fun. Make a station for each letter of the alphabet. Have your child or children find things from around the house that start with each letter. Tell

your child(ren) to then bring each item and put it in the proper let-ter’s station. Once your child has completed the alphabet, give him or her a prize! If you are playing with more than one child, make it a race. Whoever gets the most letters gets the prize.

twister with a twist W h a t

kid doesn’t love getting

messy every once in a while? When you combine the game Twister and mess making, you have a bore-dom buster no kid could refuse. To play, lay out the twister mat in the yard. Fill four large bowls with shav-ing cream. Mix shaving cream with red food color-ing in one bowl, blue in another, yellow in another and green in the last bowl for corresponding twister circles. Mound each color shaving cream on the same color cir-cle. Let your children play twister and make a mess! But make sure they are wearing a bathing suit or something that is OK to get stained. To read more about this kind of summer fun, check out www.1000lifehack.com.

ice Cream tossCrystal Underwood from www.pleasantestthing.com

offers up a wonderful recipe for turning summertime ice cream making into a game. Underwood divulges her genius idea to readers at www.growingajeweledrose.com.

All you need are three ingredients and a playful spirit. Underwood says, “Place these ingredients [1/2 cup

heavy whipping cream or half and half, 1 teaspoon va-nilla, and 2 1/2 teaspoons sugar] into a tightly sealed sandwich sized bag, pressing the air out as you seal it.

16 Beachin’ August 2014 GulfVisitorGuide.com

Page 17: Beachin' (August, 2014)

Then put this into another tightly sealed sandwich bag. Fill a gallon size resealable bag half-way full of ice cubes, and mix with 6 tablespoons of coarse kosher salt. Then put the sealed sandwich-size bag into the middle of the ice, and seal the larger bag. I also recommend doubling up the gallon size bags as well, especially if you have little helpers.”

Now the real fun begins. The mixture now needs to be agitated for 10 minutes to form into ice cream. So get moving with the kids. Play toss. Play tag with whom-ever has the bag. Shake it up! After 10 minutes, your ice cream is ready. Grab a spoon and enjoy a cooling treat.

Giving backIf you are looking to teach your children the impor-

tance and rewards of giving back, there are tons of op-

tions. • Have your children pass out cold water bottles to the

mailman, yard workers or anyone out in the summer heat. Help your children host a free neighborhood car wash.

• Hold a lemonade stand for Alex’s Lemonade Stand (www.alexslemonade.org/), a charity that raises money to fight childhood cancer. For more summer service ideas like these, check out Pennies of Time online at www.penniesoftime.com/fun-summer-ser-vice-ideas.

There is so much to do and so little time to do it. All you need is a little creativity to kick the summer blahs to the curb and make summer memories you and your children will never forget.

Page 18: Beachin' (August, 2014)

Enjoy a beach day with your pup

With the weather heating up, it's time to start check-ing out some dog friendly beaches with your four-legged friend! For most dogs, getting to run

around in the sand, dip into the waves and fetch balls out of the water is the best day ever. Check out these tips to ensure that you and your dog have a fun and safe beach experience.

First things FirstCheck with your local beaches before you pack up the

dog, since not all beaches allow them. Depending on the time of year, some beaches allow dogs during the off-sea-son, but summer is a different story. Call ahead or visit the beach's website for information. It's also important if you can bring your dog to find out whether they need to be on leash or if they can roam free. Bring a long leash no matter what, but know ahead of time if there will be an area where a leash isn't necessary. If they don't need to have a leash, only let them be without it if you know for an absolute fact that they will respond to your voice commands. Other dogs, people, certain scents, birds, etc., may catch their attention and cause them to tune you out, which could be a recipe for disaster (no one wants a dog fight). Some people on the beach (as well as easily fright-ened children) will be less dog-friendly than others, so be mindful of who your dog might be approaching to avoid any sort of snafu.

Never leave your dog unattended. Even the most well-trained dog can get distracted; pay extra special attention to your surroundings and any potential situations that may cause your dog to wander or run off. Follow all of the rules set by the beach. You don't want to be the reason that dogs aren't allowed at that particular beach anymore.

pro Swimmer or doggie Swim Vest?If you want to bring your dog to the beach, you probably

have a good idea that your furry friend loves to swim. If this is the first time your dog will be swimming, you may want to read up on his breed just to be sure. For exam-ple, shar-peis tend to be afraid of water. Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule, but finding out if swimming is characteristic of the breed will be a good indicator of how enthusiastic (or timid) your dog might be. When you bring the pup to the water, if he isn't diving right in, take it slow. Don't force your dog to go in. He may feel more comfortable if you head in first and call him. If you're ner-vous or unsure, purchasing a dog life vest to bring with you would be a safe bet.

be Wary of temperature ExtremesDepending on where you are in the country, summer

at the beach can bring about two extremes: heat from the

sun and a cold, cold ocean. Pay attention to how your dog is acting and responding while he's with you throughout the day, since there could be the potential of either heat stroke or hypothermia (if he's been swimming his little heart out).

heat stroke signs• Rapid panting• Bright red tongue• Thick, sticky saliva• Weakness• Vomiting• Diarrhea

If you think your dog has heat stroke while you're at the beach, take the following actions immediately:• Move the pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold)

water all over his body to gradually lower his body temperature.

• Apply ice packs or cool towels to the pet's head, neck and chest only.

• Allow the pet to drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.

• Take him to the nearest veterinarian.

hypothermia signs• Lethargy• Weakness• Shivering• Muscle stiffness• Difficulty breathing• Fixed and dilated pupils

If you think that your dog has hypothermia while you're at the beach, take the following actions immediately:• Wrap your dog in towels and blankets that have been

warmed by the sun.• Bring extra fresh water in bottles and leave them out

in the sun as this warm water can be applied to your dog to bring his body temperature back up.

• If your dog has still not stopped shivering and has continued lethargy, bring him to the nearest veterinar-ian.

• As much as we wish, our dogs can't tell us when they're in pain and not feeling good. The above lists are certainly not all-inclusive, so if you notice any-thing out of the ordinary with your dog's behavior, get him out of the elements immediately.

A few ways to prevent heat stroke is to bring lots of fresh, cool water for your dog to drink. A spray bottle with cool water that you can spray him down with will

18 Beachin’ August 2014 GulfVisitorGuide.com

Page 19: Beachin' (August, 2014)

also help with temperature regulation. A bonus of having fresh water with you is that you can also clean the sand and salt water from his paws, which can cause irritation and dry out those sensitive pads. Also, since you can't guarantee you will have access to a shady area, bring an umbrella he can hang out under.

To make sure hypothermia doesn't strike, bring lots of towels you can snuggle him in and remove the excess cold salt water. Not only can this warm him up quicker, it also helps in removing the sand and salt water from his fur so he won't be in danger of shaking off on someone else.

the do's and don'ts of the beachThere are hundreds of beaches in the U.S. and Canada

that allow dogs, but compared to the number of beaches there are, this is a small percentage. Many beaches al-lowed dogs at one time, but because of careless owners, had to put a stop to canine patrons. Follow these rules (in addition to the beach's rules), and you'll make sure you can bring Fido back as many times as he likes.

dog beach don'ts:Don't let your dogs go into areas on the beach where

they're not allowed. Dunes and grassy areas need to be protected from any sort of environmental damage that a dog might cause.

Don't let your dog out of your sight. Not even once. Pay-ing attention and being proactive will go a long way in protecting you and your dog. The last thing you want is to be sued for a dog fight or by someone that had a run-in with your dog.

Don't forget to bring the leash, beach towels, umbrella, fresh water and doggie sunscreen (yes, you can actually get sunscreen specifically made for dogs).

Don't leave a mess behind. Don't count on the beach supplying waste bags, so bring your own and be diligent about cleaning up. No one wants to find a surprise just laying on the beach or buried in the sand.

dog beach do's:Do make sure your dog's vaccinations are current and

that he's wearing the proper ID. Keep your vet's number on hand just in case something happens.

Do check the ocean for jellyfish and stingrays. A sting to your dog will be sure to ruin both his and your experi-ence.

Do set a time limit for your beach trip. A couple hours might be just the right amount of time at the beach, de-pending on your dog's activity level. At the first sign of your dog tiring, pack it up and get back on the road. Do bring toys and balls to throw and find sticks to fetch. This is exactly why you are both there: to have fun!

It was a beautiful summer morning when we leftFairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. Wewere on ourway down toOrange Beachto check outa businessthat many ofour friendshave told usabout, thisEnglishmanwho hadopened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughterEmma. My hair is very important to me and getting agood haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones isknown for and excellent hair color to boot.

We have both been very dissatisfied with the last fewattempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; mostof the so called stylists did not take into considerationour age or understand that we both want to look greatwithout a lot of fuss and bother.

The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on time to this charming yellow and whitebeach house on the beach road with a fabulous view ofthe Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthonyand Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drinkor a glass of wine before he started making us beautiful.

Pam, my friend, went first since I was a little chickenafter the last experiences. Anthony directed her to astyling chair andwent on toexplain the tenmost importantrules in designinga customhairstyle to suither. He firstlooked at her faceshape andexplained thatthere are fiveface shapes outthere and toldher her face shape was oval. The next was bonestructure and head shape, after that was the type of herhair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of conditionher hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows outof the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikesand fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right.

So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo anddeep conditioning, then for the next 30 minutesAnthony’s hands were a sea of motion, lastly a quickblow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she wasfinished! She was so happy and she could not believe thedifference in her hair.

Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer

gets very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out therefor my hair with no success! Anthony explained thatcommercial hair products are made different toprofessional hair products. Commercial shampoos aremade of mild detergent and the conditioners are basedon petroleum oil. Where professional hair products arepure and natural and give back to the hair, he also wenton to say that we should all wash our hair every day andcondition our hair the same.

Anthony explained that at all times our hair has tohave at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, weshould treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin,by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense tome, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hairevery day because in her mind it would dry it out.Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug storeproducts would dry your hair out if washed daily. Afterwe went through the ten rules, he took me to theshampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo andconditioning my hair had ever had.

While shampooing, Emma explained to me what Ishould do in the morning in the shower, again stressingno over-the-counter hair products, that’s why my hair isdry and frizzy. After shampooing and beforeconditioning, towel blot the hair because the hair isporous like a sponge, putting any conditioner on one’shair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself,so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in whileyou are washing yourself. Then before you leave theshower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just

rinse the excess andno more.

After sheexplained to me thehows & whys, Iunderstood. Theyare like hair doctors,if we listen and dowhat they says itworks! Anthony hashis own line ofproducts andeverything he usedon me was his and

believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me waswonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam,no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great productbefore he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with alot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought abottle. Best money we ever spent and yes, we aredefinitely going back. He is a true professional.

Page 22: Beachin' (August, 2014)

August brings an end to summer break from school, and while that may change the number of boats on the water, the fishing will only get better for the next few months. All we need is to remain storm free.

White trout White trout will be more thick than ever in Mobile

Bay and should be larger in size as well. Some people prefer white trout over specks as there is no size or creel limit on the white trout.

This allows someone to catch all the white trout they want to clean.

White trout can be filleted with some ease. I scale them, remove the fillet, remove the rib cage and the job is done.

Of course, if you have to clean 50 fish, you now have 100 fillets to scale and cut. That’s a lot of fish cleaning. I leave the skin on because it holds the flesh together while frying and allows you to grill them if that’s the way you prefer.

Either way, it’s quick and easy to get this done. Be aware of the laws on disposing the remains. No one wants fish to wash up on their beach and bake in the August sun.

White trout are better cooked fresh in my book, but some do freeze them until needed.

To catch white trout, cut your motor and allow the boat to move with the current or wind around the in-shore reefs of Mobile Bay. Use tight line on the bottom or slip corks set for near-the-bottom fishing. I use live shrimp, salted shrimp and/or gulp baits. Gulp baits can be cut in small sections to conserve your bait. It all works very well.

To salt shrimp, just get a few tubs of dead shrimp and remove the shell, tail and head. Spread the shrimp out on a stack of newspaper and cover well with table salt. Let sit overnight. In the morning you’ll have shrimp that are as tough as leather. It stays on the hook great and most fish love it.

Specks If you would rather catch specks, they should be

around in high numbers this month. Fish around the same inshore reefs and all the inshore gas rigs. It’s also a good idea to try the closer offshore rigs. If you’re fishing the inshore reefs, it’s a good idea to drift across the reef with your bait under a cork about 2/3 yards of the water depth from the surface. This will most often keep you above the rip-rap that makes up the reef bottom.

If you find some high peaks on the newer reef, try a bait next to the peak. The best bait is live croakers for specks or redfish and live shrimp for all game fish. Hard lures and plastics will work as well.

Specks need to be more than 14 inches long and have a creel limit of 10 fish. Specks are better cleaned by fil-

leting and then removing the skin and rib cage. I cut the meat in chunks and season with salt, pepper and your favorite Cajun seasoning mix. After pan frying, I dip the chunks in a mixture of prepared horserad-ish, ketchup and hot sauce.

Some like a batter on the chunks. When I do a batter, I use a hushpuppy mix.

redfishIf it’s redfish you want, the Dixey Bar is a great place

to be on an outgoing tide with live pogies or good size croakers drifted on the bottom. I’ve boated redfish up to 45 pounds along with large jacks, black drum, kings and some cobia. These fish come to the Dixey bar for the pogie schools. Late in the summer, the number of pogies drop off and the redfish and black drum and jacks will come into the bay looking for the pogie schools.

The jacks will feed on the surface and cause a lot of white water in their feeding. The redfish stay near the bottom along with the black drum. You never know what will be next on your hook.

If the slot reds are your choice, then fish all the piers and pilings along the eastern shore with gulps, spoons, or live shrimp. You can also catch crabs, sting rays, and catfish here. Pompano will sometimes be around the in-shore rigs as well.

If you keep a black drum, understand that most likely they will have a parasite growing in the flesh nearest to the backbone. It’s said that they are harmless, but I’ll never know — if I see a worm in the flesh, I’ll send that fish to the crabs.

Redfish are great to eat. Some fillet and skin the fish and pan fry using the same seasoning and methods as specks. If you skin and fry redfish, remove the blood line from the flesh. If you like, you can cook them on the half shell. Just fillet, but don’t skin the fish. Put the fish on the grill and season as you wish. Sear the exposed flesh first; then flip and cook until done on the scale side. It’s really good this way, and your dinner guests will never forget it.

Always know and comply with the game and fish laws to ensure there will be fish next time. Our game and fish fines can really mess up your vacation. Never take redfish that measures more than 26 inches offshore to federal waters because the laws may be different than state laws. Watch your wake and stay as far away from other anchored boats as you can.

Stay safe. Call if I can help. 251-550-5418Life is good and so is the fishing,

It was in the month of May in the year 2013 — his first night after starting with a permanent position at the Fort Morgan State Historic Site as living history interpreter/la-borer. His duties were to be a summer seasonal tour guide conducting the historical interpretation program, conduct-ing guided tours of the site, transcribing historic docu-ments, assisting in site preservation and nightly patrols, demonstrating Civil War era small arms and artillery, as-sisting in electrolysis and preservation of artifacts and site maintenance and reconstructing historic living for public viewing.

For history buff John J. Gurner, it was a dream job to be sure. Suddenly, you are no longer just reading it, teaching it or talking it. Suddenly, you are living it. That first night as he bedded down in the barracks on the grounds of the fort, he drifted off to sleep and slipped back in time to one of the battles of Mobile Bay. The dreams seemed so real as he pointed his musket at a charging invader and woke up as the nearby thunder sounded like the cannons firing at ships passing in the channel. In the darkness of the room, a small night light lit up his Confederate uniform hanging on the outside of the closet door, his uniform hat that sat on the dresser close by and a musket rifle propped against the wall a short distance away.

Glancing around the room of the building built back in the 1800s, he had to smile. It was all too real. He was not only there where it all took place, but he was part of it. He had gone back in time and was about to live a dream. He was there to let visitors feel and experience what the sol-diers and camp followers felt, but he and the visitors would know the outcome.

John was born in 1976 in Charleston, Mississippi, but at 9 years old, his family moved to Athens, Alabama and he

spent the rest of his young years there. He graduated from Jacksonville State Universi-ty with a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in anthropology and then got his mas-ter’s degree in history with a focus on Celtic culture and immigration to the south from 1700-1800.

John always had an infatuation with British history and Jacobite Scotland, as well as the 18th century British diplo-matic connection. He also was fascinated by early military history, particularly North American Colonial, Northern European and Medieval Japan. Tied in with it all was early American history with a concentration on Scots and Scots-Irish immigration up to 1775 and a study of the Colonial South from 1607 to 1775.

After graduation, he taught at Jacksonville State Univer-sity in the Department of History and Foreign Languages. Having a hunger for more knowledge, he applied to and was accepted at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was there that he received his master’s of sci-ence by research in Scottish History and Scottish Jacobitism from 1688 to 1746 and a minor in Anglo-European Diplo-matic Relations from 1688 to 1746.

Upon completing his courses and getting his degree, he backpacked around northern Europe. When he returned to the United States, John got a job teaching at John C. Calhoun Community College and was an adjunct instructor at North-west Shoals Community College. Because of economic cut-backs at many of the educational facilities, he found it dif-ficult to find a full time instructor’s position, so he started looking around for other possibilities.

He hoped to find something in his field of study that he could contribute to; a program that would be beneficial to both the employer and the employed. He heard about Fort Morgan and came for the summer as a volunteer. He loved it. It was teaching in a way, but different in that people are just mostly passing through this great facility, and you want to make them feel and understand what happened here and why it is here.

When he heard of a full-time position opening up at the fort, he applied and was hired. He plans to stay and says there’s “a lot more to do, discover and explore.” He par-ticularly likes and respects Mike Bailey, who is in charge of the fort.

John says there will be a full history of the fort coming out soon, and he enjoys participating in completing it.

John’s professional affiliations include the Alabama As-sociation of Historians, the North American Conference on British Studies, the Scottish Studies Foundation and the Southern Historical Association.

John Gurner, you are a treasure at the end of a rainbow, or in this case, at the end of the Island. How fortunate we are to have you here ON THE ISLAND as a valued member of the community. How privileged I am to call you a friend.

Capt. Mark asks, ‘Who’s on the Island?’

Q & A with Jack Robertson aka Big Earlby destiny brown

Jack Robertson, also known as Big Earl, can be found perfoming on the stages of the Flora-Bama every weekend. Known for his raunchy songs about pontoons and SEC football, Big Earl is a must-see at America’s Last Roadhouse. Jack gives Beachin’ magazine an exclusive interview on his song inspirations, the reason behind his nickname and why he loves to do what he does.

Q: When did you begin playing music?

A: I started playing professionally at the age of 16. I worked in small bars on the weekends in Arkansas where I grew up. I played guitar and sang with a four piece band called Jack Flash, but we changed our name every time we got fired, which was often!

Q: Where do you draw inspiration for your songs?

A: I get a lot of my ideas about songs talking with people at the Flora-Bama. But some of the ideas for my old school Big Earl songs (that are on my “All Time Greatest Animal Love Songs” CD) I got from watching Discovery Channel, ha!

Q: What are some of your most memorable experiences performing at the Flora-bama?

A: Just about every weekend something memorable happens during a Flora-Bama show! We have big stars that come in from time to time and will get on stage with us, which is always cool. But, the one night that stands out the most to me is last year when a woman that I didn’t know came up to me before a show and said, “I’ve been battling cancer for a long time and haven’t been able to get out much. This morning, I decided I needed to be cheered up, so here I am and you better not let me down.” We had a great time and she stayed the whole night. How can you forget something like that?

Q: What are some of your biggest accomplishments in your career so far?

A: I would have to say being able to have a gig every weekend for all of these years and still enjoying it so much. I had a record deal in the early 90s with three CMT videos, an album, a bus and I was per-forming with a bunch of major artists. I’ve also written a few songs that have been recorded. I do write a little with local guys and one of the best around here is Larry T. Wilson. The local musicians and writ-

The shady oaks of Meyer Park will prove to be a welcome respite to the heat dur-ing the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance/City of Gulf Shores Art Market. The event features original works of local and regional art-ists. In addition to the visual art, there will be activities for children and live musical entertainment.

One of the artists displaying his work is jeweler, Fred Tincher. Tincher grew up in Buffalo, New York and developed an early interest in the art of making jewelry. He started with enameling, but soon switched to coin jewelry when he fell in love with the process of cutting and shaping coins.

“You just get a jeweler's saw and start cutting,” Tincher said. “And after enough practice, you can keep the blade in one piece long enough to start following the design.”

A resident of Theodore, Fred Tincher has had enough practice, having created coin jewelry since the mid 70s. He enjoys finding foreign coins with interesting designs and working with America's early coins.

“One of my greatest pleasures is meeting people at art shows,” he said “Talk-ing, and finding fellow crafters who are doing things I can't do and would never have thought about.”

For more information about the GCAA/City of Gulf Shores Art Market, visit gulfcoastartsalliance.com, email [email protected] or call 251-948-2627 or 251-223-3970. The Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Art Gallery and offices are located at 225 East 24th Avenue in the Waterway Village of Gulf Shores.

ers in our area are really great.

Q: Why do they call you big Earl?

A: After recording my first CD, I knew I wasn’t going to use my real name. These Big Earl CDs are not that politically correct and some say they are a bit edgy, so I figured it was a good idea to go with Big Earl since I have a day job.

Q: Who are the musicians in your band?

A: Stan Walker on piano, Mark LaBore on bass and Preston Stanfill on drums. These guys are awe-some and we have so much fun on stage! “I have had the most fun in my life playing music these past 18 years at the Flora-Bama. I’m on my 11th Big Earl CD and I will be recording my newest one along with my first DVD within the next few weeks at the Flora-Bama. Watch for details on the Flora-Bama website or my website, AlabamaBigEarl.com. Come out and see us any weekend at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays at the World Famous Flora-Bama. And remember, if you are not offended within the first 10 minutes of the show, please be patient, I will get to ya!”
