Although Scotland was his birthplace and now his home, it is France which has so often provided the inspiration for his painting. His love of France and passion for painting have created an outstanding artistic enquiry into French life and culture. From his first visit to Paris as a student at the Edinburgh College of Art thirty years ago, his inspiration now takes him back to Paris, and beyond, to regions such as the South West of France and Provence. Familiar to some, beguiling to others, Clark’s chosen subjects, along with his graceful rendering, deliver a sense of place that is deeply entrenched in a love affair for the culture and world that he so respects and admires. As France again inspires Michael Clark, so too, are we captivated by his painterly touch and fondness for these charming locations.

Clark has said of his process for this exhibition, “It gradually emerges from scribbled sketches, snaps and scraps of printed ephemera accumulated along the way. For this exhibition I have returned to France, especially Provence, the South West and Paris.

Favourite themes have emerged… the tantalising anticipation of a good lunch, the enduring romance of the perfect little black dress, or a stumbled upon still life.

For me, Paris is cream and gold, and I tend to visit in the winter when the bare trees permit the buildings to be seen. The warm glow of the cafés in winter is replaced by the heat of the sun in summer months. South West France offers friendship and ‘old favourites’, like the salon at 40 Rue Royale and fields hot with cadmium yellow sunflowers and lazily meandering roads. The markets are always bountiful with succulent fruits, tenderly plaited garlic and people who have time to stand and chat, or sip coffee in the shade of a café. Whilst a trip to Provence in the Autumn offered dappled sunlight, the shade provided by overarching trees, canopies and pastel parasols”.
