Items Needed

Fog)
Style of Music
• Avoid Songs that Degrade Women
• Avoid Songs that Promote Violence
• Avoid Songs that Promote Cliques
• Positive Music Create Positive Experience
• Positive Music Create Positive Consumers
• Positive Music Create Good Word of Mouth of Brand
• Neo-Soul, AfroBeat, EDM, Post-Disco, Reggae & Reggaeton
The Royalties Stuff
• Understand What Record Companies Will and Will Not Sue For
• Will Not Pursue Private Performance
• Will Pursue Huge Public Performance
• Should Not Be Concerned About This
• Should Maintain Play List and Attribution
• Case Example – YouTube socialite sued for using EDM w/ no attribution.
Know the Song
• Understand When to Bring in and Take Out a Song
• Intro Beat – Usually 16 bars of drum beats layering
• Main Section – Vocals, Bridge and Hook
• Breakdown – After Hook and before Vocals – Transition Here
• Extended Mix Version – have loopable beats at the end (EDM and Post-Disco)
Reading Wavelength
• Wavelength show where the bass beat begin and where vocals begin
• Bass beat matching is used for blending tracks together
• Vocals are midsize waves close together- color coded on some DJ controllers like Serato. Overlay Vocals on Beats
• Wavelengths are tagged by the mixer to know when to bring in and take out
Understanding BPM
• BPM is beats per minute• EDM = 124-128bpm• Rap = 98 – 110bpm• Drum and Bass = 165bpm• AfroBeat, EDM and Disco is
popular because of heart target bpm for exercise
• Maintain BPM throughout session
• Avoid switching to slow jams in the 21st century. Millennials can grind at 128bpm
Transitioning
Soft Blend Transitioning• Loop second track• BPM Sync• Preview in Headphones• Fade into SoundHard Cut Transition• Tag cut point• Cue cut point• Quickly cross-fade and start
from cue• Change-up beat or non-BPM
match
Popular Techniques
• Bass Drop – Add a layer of 808 boom to an existing song
• Remove LPF and HPF to highlight vocals on a song
• Remove HPF to highlight just the bass of a groove to have people sing the vocals
• Sound Effects – Prefer Jet Sound and White Noise
• DJ Signal – a voice says your name and brand during transitions
Session Management
• Start Off With New Hits• Middle Filled With Regular Stuff
and Classics• Wrap Up with Current Heavy
Hits• Do Not Play “Special Requests”
Tell Them to GTFOH.• Shout out the Vendors• Shout out the Guest of Honor• Make Announcements• Showoff your Products and
Services
