We have celebrated workers month, let us spare a thought for animals who work too.Humans and animals are the two living beings on this earth, who have been dependant on each other since early civilisation, for safety and comfort etc. Humans started using animals to make his/her work easier. These animals do not get a “salary” all they require from us is to be treated with love, care and sustenance. Many fail to do even that. Domestic and wild animals, which are trained to do certain tasks for us, are used regularly. There are many who have astounding intelligence, like sniffing and camouflage, which are not found in humans.

PoLICE DoGS Often referred to as a K-9, is a dog which is trained specifically to assist police and other law enforcement personnel in their work. Police dogs must remember several hand and verbal commands and are responsible for a number of things, searching for lost people, drugs, looking through crime scene evidence etc. Breeds used: German Shepherds, Belgian

Malinois Bloodhounds.

GuIDE DoGS Often referred to as “seeing eye dogs”, are assistance dogs trained to lead blind and visually impaired people around obstacles. References to guide dogs date at least as far back as the mid sixteenth century. Breeds used: Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds.

GuArD DoGS Also referred to as watch dogs, a dog used to guard against, and watch for, unwanted or unexpected people or animals. The dog is discriminating therefore it does not annoy or attack familiar people. Breeds used: German Shepherds, Dobermans, Great Danes.

Bettie Els’ dream has always been of growing older in a happy, secure and caring environment. Bettie is one of those special people whom life has presented the extraordinary challenge of being intellectually challenged. Bettie celebrated her 80th birthday this past week, a feat which goes against research findings which show that people with intellectual disabilities often have an increased risk of early death compared to the general population. Bettie lived with several people before she found a home at Avril Elizabeth Home 29 years ago.Bettie has a radiant face with a beaming smile that belies the fact that not only is she intellectually challenged but also aged and frail. Described as the most content resident who is always grateful and happy with whatever she has.“After the convent she was living in closed down in 1985, Bettie came to our Home at the age of 51,” Kathy Jooste, Chief Executive Officer at Avril Elizabeth Home for the Mentally Handicapped, said. “At this stage both her parents had died and her brother was responsible for her well-being. Her brother has now also died but thankfully she still has a few relatives left who visit her. This is so important for her well-being.”

Bettie’s birthday celebrations were attended by the staff and other residents at the home and representatives of Pick n Pay (Bedford Centre), who donated gifts cake and other party goodies.“We are elated to be celebrating this milestone with Bettie and very pleased that although frail, and sometimes unstable on her feet, she is generally healthy”, said Jooste.

It’s been a long journey leading up to the May 7 elections which are now a week behind us. As a South African I think I share the sentiments of many which express that whatever the results of the ballot may be; the real winner on the day was our now 20 year old democracy. The election was however not the end of business, it was the beginning. Leading up to the election, many South Africans became sensitive to the issues around politics and the offerings of the various political parties. An ideal situation for me would be one in which the now sensitized demographic continues to grow and demand the promises are realized. It would be totally undermining the progress if we regressed into the attitude which was prevalent before the period of awakening. We have a long way to go, but I am pleased that we are all in agreement that South Africa is still alive with possibilities.Happy belated mother’s day to all our mothers, I hope that Sunday was a day to remember. Another late wish goes out to Avril Elizerbeth’s Home’s Bettie who celebrated her 80th birthday during the past week. Congratulations to all lovers of Mamelodi Sundowns and to the lovers of Manchester City; both soccer clubs have managed to win the marathons of their domestic soccer leagues. Sundowns especially proved that the league is not a sprint, but a marathon – I think this is a lesson on a focussed approach to life’s challenges.

Stay Blessed

Faced with invariably challenging situations when people involved in protests are not acting within the law or not observing the conditions as set out in their application in terms of the Gatherings Act, SAPS has embarked on a project of ensuring that all law enforcement officers are skilled and capacitated in terms of effective crowd management.A situation of only Public Order Policing members being the ones only trained in crowd management is the thing of the past – henceforth, all SAPS and Metro Police officers will undergo crowd management

training. The SAPS Academy in Pretoria commenced with this intensive three week program in early March. The first group completed the rigorous training on 28 March and a second group on 17 April. Two hunderd EMPD officers, who are now well-equipped with the know-how of protecting those protesting peacefully and tackling those who are out to cause mayhem during protests, were part of around 1,000 SAPS and Metro Police officers from around the country who completed the three-week course.

The training of Platoon Commanders is also part of the ongoing program. “The greatest challenge is for law enforcers to respond to serious provocation, intimidation, sometimes with public violence and with elements of criminality. Officers have to tackle those manifestations within the spirit and context of a community oriented policing model and the Bill of Rights which requires a realistic balance between acknowledging the rights of citizens to demonstrate versus the polices’ need to ensure peace and stability”, the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa said.

200 EMPD Officers trained in Crowd Management

CROWD MANAGERS: Acting Chief of Police, Isaac Jabulani Mapiyeye and Director Kleinbooi Mahlangu (middle) with EMPD officers who completed the course on 17 April.

EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit members patrolling Klopper Park on Sat-urday (03 May) afternoon spotted a man in a parked red VW Golf acting suspiciously. The man was confronted and on search-ing his vehicle, metro police officers came across fifteen packets of cocaine and eight packets of special cocaine esti-mated to be worth R15 000 on the streets. The Metro Police officers moved with the suspect to his flat nearby in Skuda Street were a friend of his was found in possession of three rocks of cocaine and one packet of crystal meth valued at around R500.The two suspects, who are in their early thir-ties, were charged with possession and deal-ing in illicit substances at Bedfordview police station.

Radovan Krejcir, Desai Luphondo, Sibo-niso Miya, Samuel “Saddam” Maruping, George Nthoroane and Jan Mofokeng ap-peared in the South Gauteng High Court on Thursday 8 May. The six appeared to be tried on charges re-lating to various cases including dealing in drugs, attempted murder, and kidnapping. At the beginning of Thursday’s hearing, Kre-jcir’s legal team applied for the case to be stricken off the courts roll, sighting unfair-ness from the state’s refusal to hand over information in relation to the case, which meant the defence could not prepare its case adequately. The defences application was also backed

up by the defence’s inability to process the 56 000 pages of information provided by the state given the short time frames. The state provided the evidence material, which includes evidence against all six ac-cused, to the defence a week before the trial.Krejcir’s defence’s application was unsuc-cessful however, Judge Colin Lamont or-dered the state prosecutor; Louis Masheane to hand over all copies of the relevant pages to the defence by no later than 13:00 on Fri-day 9 May.The case resumed on Monday 12 May. No other information was available at time of print.

Established in 1972; Mike’s Kitchen, has all the in-gredients to serve any South African family. Mike’s Kitchen Lambton has been servicing the residents in and around Lambton since 2011, building rela-tionships and lasting memories for patrons and staff alike. tame TIMES had the opportunity to experience the traditional restaurant and its home styled offer-ings in what we came to understand was a typical family outing to Mike’s Kitchen Lambton. We were treated to a three course meal made up of offerings out of the really smart Devour Menuzine; a magazine styled menu. For starters the taste buds were treated to an interesting combination of favourite fla-vours of the Prawn Avo and Salmon Stack which is a neatly presented stack. The base layer is made up by fresh salmon slices followed by a creamy avocado and pea mixture and topped by pan-fried prawns and served with lemon. An interesting element of this offering, apart from the combination of flavours, is definitely the combi-nation of peas and avocado – Mike’s may have uncov-ered the secret to get the young ones into eating peas.Reading through the Menuzine we came across a fact which motivated our main meal choice – 94 % of men prefer beef, but 60% of women will order fish or chick-en, so we decided on beef. From the Heritage Menu we had another curiosity arousing meal; a prime beef fillet, topped with creamy blue cheese and bacon then

finished off with a sweet black cherry sauce. Once this meal was done we agree that Mike’s Kitchen is definitely the home of Kief Beef and generous portions.Dessert almost found no room but due to more wise words from the Menuzine; don’t trust anyone who does not eat dessert. We were left no choice but to try two combinations which promise to soothe any sweet tooth. The first combination was made up of a delicious Mike’s famous cheese cake served with full cream coupled with the Oreo and caramel Moojooce (Milkshake). And for the second combination we had the Bar-one dream cou-pled with the super chocolaty Black cherry and Bar-one Moojooce.Speaking to owner, Hennie Oelofse, we really got to un-derstand why Mike’s Kitchen has remained a favourite for the South African family, their fresh ingredients, care-ful considerations on flavours and pricing came in high on our list of favourites. Mike’s Kitchen Lambton’s pro-motions menu features a variety of specials which are well suited for the family. Sunday’s Carvery Buffet which comprises of a starter, carvery and dessert all at R98 per head or the Daily Lunch Specials at R59 are just a few examples of some of these family priced good food offerings. Mike’s Kitchen Lambton is situated at Shop 16, Lambton Court, Cnr. Webber & Beacon Roads, Lambton, Germiston. Fashion House and Buyers lounge held their fashion networking session on Tuesday 6 May at News Café Bedfordview. The theme of this month’s session was: Styling garments according to diverse body types. The meeting which was addressed by Fashion Designer; Liz Ogumbo, and Rene Roberts of face2face Makeup and Beauty Design School, and attended mainly by designers and fashion buyers.Ogumbo who is a self-taught fashion designer earned her stripes while working as a ramp model all-over the world. During those years Ogumbo would spend a lot of her off time helping designers prepare garments and so learnt the art of designing. Ogumbo spoke to the attendees about designing for the client, where she encouraged designers to take charge of the consultation process because although clients think they know what they want, it is often not what their body needs. Several elements of design were addressed in Ogumbo’s address including the need for designers to have a signature so that they can establish themselves in the industry and not get caught in duplicating.Rene Roberts addressed fashion from the make-up and hair angle. Roberts explained how the incorrect colour of make-up or hair could spoil even the most well designed garment. Considerations for designers by Roberts included considering the hue of the colour compared to the complexion and eye colour and hair.

Conversations with born-frees Ndu Ngwenya

[email protected]

While many stood in line waiting to make their mark for South Africa, tame TIMES made use of the opportunity to hear the views of some of the born-frees who, against public expectations, got up to make their voices heard.

I’m here to make my mark, we have to vote that’s the only way we can make our voices heard because just complaining doesn’t help. From a perspective of a “Born-free” I think all the media reports and predictions on our generation is not necessarily accurate, yes some will not vote but that is also true of other generations. I don’t mind standing in this queue, my mother showed me photos from 1994 and really one hour is better than five years of being a voiceless citizen. I believe my vote counts

Many young people would be willing to vote if they knew what this stand really meant. We were very excited; to the extent that we made sure our ID’s were packed and already last night before our movie marathon. Every vote counts, my vote is for my future, we need a government which will be concerned about our education and jobs as well. The educational needs of every black child need to be better addressed, educated people think differently and as we stand here we know not many of our generation made an effort, but this vote is also for them.

I’m voting because I have an option. The youth is represented so why would I not make my mark? It is time for change.

i would like to draw the attention to all residents of Dinwiddie, albemarle and castleview that crime is on the increase. the crime rate in the Dinalview increased by 100% for the month of april 2014 from the previous month. In the Dinalview Sector there are 2207 Registered stands made up as follows:-Albemarle 24%, Dinwiddie 53%, Castleview 10%, Union 13%. These figures exclude the number of units in estates, complexes and flats. The Dinalview CPF has 120 registered members. The Facebook Group has 204 members (of which 5% live outside the area and 30% are from the registered CPF members)The BBM and Whatsapp Groups have 220 members (where 6% are on Facebook and 4% are duplicated.)This means that out of 2207 stands, only 3% are registered members. Then, of that 3%, only 11% are active patrollers. That means that each patroller must cover 276 stands

and not all patrollers are patrolling at the same time. Also, the patrollers are working people and do not have much time to conduct patrols as they also need to spend time with their families. We are getting hit, and hard. We really do need your help. We are not asking you to patrol every night for 5 hours, but if more patrollers come on board and patrol once or twice a week for 2 to 3 hours, it will greatly impact the difference we are trying to achieve. Is it really too much to ask? It could be you next. it’s your life - take it seriously.Dinalview cpF meetings are held on the last Wednesday of every month at Dinwiddie High School at 18:30. People held up at an off-ramp

on 6 May, a complainant alleged that he was driving off the edenvale off-ramp when he was stopped by the suspect vehi-cle who showed them the SapS appoint-ment certificate. They started to search both victims and stole valuable items as well as the car keys and left . They stopped 5 metres away and threw back the car keys and drove off. Mother’s Day was celebrated on Sunday and tame TIMES hopes that all mothers got shown just how much of an impact they make in the children’s lives and were treated to showers of love and appreciation. tame TIMES spoke to some mothers and asked them what Mother’s Day means to them.

Kholofelo Chademanah, Mrs South Africa 2014, 2nd Princess said, “As a mother I have a soft spot for children, and if I can show one child living in difficult circumstances that their current situation does not define who they will become in future, then I know I will have made my contribution.”

Loreen Fletcher, tame TIMES Sales Executive said, “Mothers’ Day is a time to reflect on my children’s lives. How blessed I am to be chosen by God to be their mother and with children there eventually comes grandchildren – little beings who enlighten your life and bring so much happiness. Best of all, with grandchildren, when you are finished having fun with them you can hand them back to their parents.”

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) choir was established in 2007 with only ten members – founded by the now retired Chief Superintendent; Lehihi. Through the years EMPD Choir has developed into a formidable group that is now counted among choirs of long-standing such as JMPD and Soweto Choral Choir. The choir has grown to fifty members. The purpose of the choir is to play a role during Community Safety memorial and funeral services; to close the gap between the law enforcement fraternity and the communities they serve; to educate the community about the police environment; to engage in community activities and programs; to promote the Batho Pele Principles and to ensure the well-being of employees through music.Orphanages and homes such as Tembisa Orphanage, Mohau Orphanage & Disabled Persons in Vosloorus and Tholakele Orphanage Home in Kwa-Thema are some of the homes that have benefitted greatly from the choirs efforts in raising funds by organizing concerts and soliciting assistance from businesses and churches. Items donated included electrical appliances, blankets, clothing and groceries among others. Choral festivals are held annually with the aim of reducing the plight of these homes.

John Vlismas wants you to go an explora-tion with him through the fiery depths of the world coming to an end and will share the fate of mankind with you. Are you brave enough for these Revelations? If you are book your tickets to Revelations- Sacred Cow Apocalypse at The Lyric The-atre, Gold Reef City on 23 and 24 May.Vlismas promises to attack: family, friends, children, peace, hope, faith and charity, as well as an all-out attack on the current presi-dent, or “that totally busted thief of an **shole” as he refers to the head of state. tame TIMES caught up with the comedic prophet to hear why people should go watch this show.

How DoES REVELATIoNS DIffER To 40? This show is all-new material. Where the theme was turning 40 at the last show, this show is all about the idea of the end of the world.

wHAT Do you LIkE AbouT PERfoRMING AT GoLD REEf CITy?The Lyric Theatre is my favourite venue in the country, not only is it a classic room with excellent gear, but most importantly, the resi-dent team are the best I have worked with. We have become close and share a very good creative relationship.

THIS SHowS INCLuDES A bAND- wHERE DID THIS STEM fRoM? I have always loved live music and try wherever I can to include it in my shows. I think it’s great to use a show as an excuse to put on a hot band for the crowd, why not?

wHAT MADE you INCoRPo-RATE MuLTIMEDIA?I am a huge fan of merging technology and live perfor-

mance, I feel it elevates the experience and embraces progress. Augmented reality is currently being implemented subtly into our lives, so it makes sense to do so with enter-tainment.

If you wERE STuCk IN AN ELEVAToR ALoNE wITH STEVE HofMEyER How wouLD IT PLAy ouT? I don’t know, I have never been stuck in a lift with a fading narcissist who places album sales before moral integrity, so hard to say.

wHAT IS youR CoMEDIC INSPIRATIoN? Reality, humanity and profanity.

wHy SHouLD PEoPLE CoME wATCH REVELATIoNS?Because it would be sad to be standing there on my own in front of empty chairs?

wHAT ARE you GoING To REVEAL?This show will include an all-out attack on my own sacred cows, a roast of President Zuma (I have done so many roasts with other peo-ple, but this is a special, limited roast, so I’m doing it on my own) and some very interest-ing findings on the psychology of the end of the world.

wITH you GETTING oLDER – How ARE THoSE TATTooS LookING oN youR boDy?

When you have guys like Busta Bolton at the needle, you know they are going to look good for quite a long time to come.

DID you VoTE IN THE ELECTIoNS?I did vote, as it is a tiny duty I am

asked to perform in exchange for citizenship.

Sonja Laxton completed her 81st Spar Women’s Challenge in Port Elizabeth on 3 May in a time of 57.12 minutes. It was not her best time, but for fans of the runner who has more than 70 national titles to her name, it was a time to celebrate. On November 17 last year, Laxton was hit by a car during a training run. She suffered multiple fractures, including shoulders, elbows, ribs, ankle and spine, and spent some time in intensive care at the Milpark Hospital. Many thought she would never be able to run again, but Sonja’s indomitable spirit saw her back on the road in less than six months.“It came as a surprise to me when I heard she was running,” said her husband, Ian, who is the manager of the Spar Grand Prix.“We’d been on holiday in the Eastern Cape, and Sonja must have hidden her RAC clothes at the bottom of her suitcase, because we arrived in Port Elizabeth and she told me she was going to run.”Despite a swollen ankle and a still painful shoulder, Laxton was the third grandmaster to finish, well ahead of the 70 minutes Ian had predicted. Her daughter Kim finished in 16th place, in 36.13 minutes, and immediately made her way back to find her mother and escort her to the finish line.“I’m so proud of Sonja,” said Ian. “And the time she did is amazing, when you remember how badly she was injured.”

It was a momentous and joyous ceremony when Abraham Kriel Childcare (AKC) was nominated as the beneficiary of the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund. The official handover of a donation cheque to Paul Momsen, chief executive of AKC, on behalf of well-known rugby players from the Fund took place on 8 May. Golden Lions rugby players Robert Du Bruin, Franco van der Merwe and Andries Coetzee were present at the handover.MyPlayers Benevolent Fund was founded in 2013 and launched by professional rugby players in South Africa and is the official charity organisation of the players. Professional rugby players in SA consider themselves very fortunate in that they have the opportunity

to live out their dreams of playing professional rugby. The rugby players feel that it is only fitting to give back and support communities who are less fortunate by donating funds from the players’ business to charitable causes around the country. The Fund made its first donation to the Chris Burger Petro Jackson fund last year as well as the J9 Foundation. This year, all 5 Super Rugby teams, the nine provinces as well as the Springboks will have an opportunity to donate to causes in their respective regions. “Although, there are so many deserving charities, the Golden Lions Rugby Union nominated Abraham Kriel Childcare. The organisation is dedicated to uplifting and improving the lives of so many children and the impact that it has on the lives of these

children is absolutely heartening to see. We know that this contribution will impact all of its beneficiaries,” Sam Nyaniso of the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund said.“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund as well as all of the players who are part of this organisation. It is through these contributions such that we can continue to do the work that we are doing and making a difference to the lives of all children in need,” Hilda du Toit, marketing manager of Abraham Kriel Childcare said.To find out more about the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund, please visit their website on www.myplayers.co.za and the Abraham Kriel Childcare on www.abrahamkriel.org.

Lions denied crucial retake

Elton Jantjies missed a last minute conversion in the Lions game against the Highlanders in Dunedin, a game which the Lions controversially narrowly lost by one point; 23 – 22.The Lions began the game on the back foot as they failed to convert position into points while the Highlanders converted their first chance which came as early as the third minute through a Richard Buckman try and a conversion by Hayden Parker. The Highlanders received a penalty halfway into the first half as a result of an illegal play during a ruck. Parker managed to kick three more points onto the board for the home team, bringing the score to 10 – 0. The penalty was shortly followed by drop-goal also from the boot of Parker and

two tries late in the half which brought the score to 23 – 0 at half time. The Lions ran onto the field as a different team, showing determination to turn their first-half performance around. As early as the third minute, their determination showed positive results as Francois de Klerk scored a try; Marnitz Boshoff converted bringing the scores to 23 – 7.In the 55th minute the Highlanders were dealt a blow, when Chris King received a yellow card after he played Warren Whiteley off the ball. The Lions got their second try through Lionel Mapoe in the 68th minute, the resulting conversion was unfortunately missed 23 – 12. The Lions pushed on through the closing stages of the

second-half and the pressure earned the Johannesburg team their third try scored by Armand van dar Merwe, the resulting conversion was again unfortunately missed. The Lions launched their last attack late in the game, the attack resulted in a Coutnall Skosan try in the 79th minute. The resulting conversion was set up to be taken by Elton Jantjies, the controversy of the match came when he was put under pressure by advancing Highlanders players before he had taken the kick. The circumstances should have led to a retake of the conversion which Jantjies had subsequently missed, however the referee judged against the retake; ending the game with the Highlanders winning by a single point.

OFF THE PITCH By Craig Norris

The IPL has certainly kept us on our toes over the past three weeks, with daily entertainment. It seems at the moment that it is like a weekly soapie in our living rooms for the cricket purists, that never has an ending. The Proteas players taking part are certainly getting in much needed practice before the international schedule gets back on track. As far as the South African boys go, AB De Villiers and David Miller have been the stand out players in the IPL this year for their respective teams; and both have recorded unbelievable strike rates in helping their Indian franchises win most of their games. On a more important note, I wait in anticipation for the announcement of the new Proteas Captain. Former South African opening batsman, Andrew Hudson met with his co-selectors last Friday and we are still to hear the outcome of this meeting regarding the touring squad for the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka; and more importantly the appointment of the new Proteas captain.I am sure that you would agree with me, that most of the South African cricketing public would want to see AB De Villiers taking the responsibility of leading the Proteas, not in just the test arena, but in all formats of international cricket. I strongly believe that a cricketing nation should only have one cricket captain. I know that there has been many a different combination of captains between the three formats across the cricketing nations, but I personally believe that this is not the solution. Ask yourself this-Which format is more important and the most respected? It must surely be test match cricket, which tests a player’s ability to concentrate over five days, physically and mentally, with fitness being the main contributor. A test player in his own right should adapt to any format of cricket. Going forward, the Proteas’ tour to Sri Lanka which consists of three ODI games and two test matches, will hopefully see a couple of new faces. In the spinning department, I hope that Dane Piedt gets his opportunity to bowl alongside the incumbent spinner in Imran Tahir, as well as the young batsman in Rilee Rossouw, whom has consistently scored runs in the domestic competition for the Knights, will hopefully make his test debut.Let’s hope that the new skipper and management will win back the status of the number one test playing nation we recently held. 1
