Multi-Subject Activity Guide for Please Please the Bees

Art: (Choose 1.) • Draw a picture of a bee. Need a little help? You can watch this step by step “how to” on

youtube: (https://youtu.be/6bY8v7u_VJU) Take a picture and send it to your teacher. • Draw your favorite part of Please Please the Bees. Share with someone at home. Tell them

the story in your own words. Use these words, First… Next… Last. • Ask an adult if you can go outside and see what flowers might be blooming. Draw a picture

of a flower you see. Write a list of describing words that might tell someone about your flower. You can use size words, color words, tell how many petals, how it smells or feels to your fingers.

Language Arts: (Choose 1.)

• Write 3 sentences about how Benedict solved his problem. Remember to use your best handwriting. Start sentences with capital letters and use the correct ending punctuation. Highlight the subject (noun) of each sentence with a yellow crayon or marker. Circle the predicate (verb) with an orange crayon or marker.

• Think about a few words in this story that have more than one meaning: fly, strike, please, change. For example, if I were using the word “hand”, I could write these two sentences: 1. I was stung by a bee on my left hand. (Hand is a noun here.) 2. I will hand you a note from my mom. (Hand is an action word (verb) in this sentence. Choose two of the words from the story (fly, strike, please, change) and write two sentences with each word showing different ways to use the word. That is four sentences in all. Use capitalization and punctuation rules.

• Imagine that the bees’ strike did not work. Write a letter to Benedict from the bees’ perspective and tell him why he is not getting his honey and what he can do to make things right. Make sure to use at least three sentences in your letter.

• Or write a letter from Benedict to the bees to convince them to bring honey again. Give them good reasons to bring the honey and what they will get in return. Write at least three sentences in your letter.

Reading: (Choose 1.)

• Find and read a recipe that includes honey, like the easy 3 ingredient snack recipe below. If you want to make the recipe, ask permission and get an adult to help you with the cooking part. Tell someone how you made your recipe, whether you liked it, and whether you would want to make it again. Add interesting details. Would you make substitutions or additions? (It might be fun to use chow mien noodles instead of cereal. Nuts? Marshmallows? Candy?)

• Read Please Please the Bees to a sibling and/or an adult at your house. Tell them what you liked best about the story. Ask them what they liked best. Think about the problem and the way it was solved in the story. Then write a few sentences about the problem in the story and the solution. Remember that a solution is how the problem was solved.

• “A few jars?” said the bee. “Buddy, we deliver three jars of honey to you every day. Every month! Every year! Do the math, Einstein.” Use repeated addition to find out how many jars of honey Benedict receives from the bees every week. Remember there are 7 days in 1 week, and Bear get 3 jars every day.

• Benedict loves honey but realized he needed to do some work to help the bees. So, Benedict planted some flowers. Use the table below to create a tally chart and pictograph to show the flowers Benedict planted.

• Use the table above to write a story problem. Solve your problem using an algorithm and pictorial representation.

• Read this nonfiction book about bees on Epic. The title is Honey Bees. You will learn some interesting honey bee facts. Take anARtest when you finish reading.Seequiznumberbelow.

• A honeybee is an insect. Learn more about insects on Brain Pop Jr. by going to this link: https://jr.brainpop.com/science/animals/insects/ After you listen to the video, take an easy quiz. Write down one or two new things you learned about insects.

• Use this picture to help you draw the parts of a flower plant. Be sure to label these parts of your plant: leaf, root, stem, flower.

Next, draw what plants need to grow. Hint: Choose four things from these choices.

• Write a thank you note to someone you love. Tell them reasons why you are thankful for them and why they are important to you. Ask an adult to snap a picture of your note and message it to that person.

• After the bees go on strike, Benedict does some thinking. He decides that he has been selfish and wants to make things right with the bees. Tell about a time that you were selfish and worked to make things right. Were you able to solve the problem?

• Benedict learned that cooperation is important in a community. Describe examples of cooperation

in your family, at school, or in the community where you live.
