Materials:Bob Marley and the Wailers music, music player (suggested songs: One Love, Jammin’, and Three Little Birds)

1. Gather your students into a seated circle.

2. Ask your students the following questions: What is your favorite kind of music? Why do you like that kind of music? What instruments do you hear in your favorite music? What does your favorite music make you think of? How does your body want to move to that music?

3. Inform your students that they are going to see the show BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS at The New Victory Theater. This show is a musical theater piece, and the music that is in the show was created by a famous musician named Bob Marley. Ask: Have any of you ever heard of Bob Marley before? Solicit responses for any prior knowledge about Bob Marley.

4. Tell your students that Bob Marley came from the island of Jamaica, and performed a style of music called reggae. Today, they will all be getting to know Bob Marley and his music so that they will be ready for the show!

5. Play a song for your students, instructing them to listen to the music and raise their hands when they recognize an instrument. The main reggae instruments for your students to listen for are: guitar, piano, drums, horns, and voice. If the song you’re playing incorporates the steel drum, be sure to point this instrument out to them as it is an important component of Bob Marley’s music.

6. Tell your students that their second task is to think of any words or images that they associate with the song as they listen to it. For example, does this song make them think of the beach? Dinner parties? Family? Happiness? Sadness? Have your students share out their thoughts. Write them down on the board or large chart paper.

7. Encourage your students to choose one of the words they associated with the song and invite them to stand and create a physical pose that represents this word. Ask for volunteers to “show” their word poses (see if your other students can guess what they might be).

8. End this activity with a dance party to one of your favorite Bob Marley songs! Ask your students to show you how their bodies want to move to this music.

9. Reflect on this activity with your students.

refLectioN QueStioNSHow is Bob Marley’s music different from the music that you usually listen to?How did Bob Marley’s music make you want to move?Based on the kind of music Bob Marley wrote and how it made you feel, what do you think the show BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS will be about?

Materials: Your students’ lucky charmsJournal paper and pens/pencils

1. The evening before you do this activity in class, ask your students to bring in something from home that they consider their lucky charm. This can be anything- and if it’s not something the students can bring in or touch, they should describe or draw their charm on a piece of paper and bring it into class.

2. Once everyone has brought their charms to class, guide your students to write a journal entry about their lucky charm. Ask them to answer any or all of the following questions:

a. Where did you get this charm?b. What about it makes you feel safe?c. Would anyone else find it valuable? Why or why not?d. What do you think would happen if you lost it or someone took it from you?e. What are some lucky things that happened to you because of this charm?

3. Have your students share their lucky charm experiences with a partner. With their journal responses as a guide, the pairs should talk about the importance of their lucky charms and ask their partners about their's.

4. Ask for volunteers to present their lucky charms to the class. Encourage your students to ask questions of the presenter about the importance of their lucky charm. Be sure that all presenters address the question: What about your charm makes you feel safe?

5. Inform your students that in the show, BOB MARLEY'S THREE LITTLE BIRDS, the characters on stage talk about luck a lot. The main character, Ziggy, has his own lucky charm: his hair. When they watch the performance, they’ll see how important his hair can be!

6. Finally, to complete the activity, have your students complete the Creativity Page in this section, which asks them to draw the story of how their charm became lucky to them.

refLectioN QueStioNSDid you learn anything new about your classmates as they shared stories of their lucky charms? Thinking about what your classmates shared today, why do you think Ziggy's hair might be lucky?
