Access to College Excellence (ACE) Learning Communities

First-Year Programs

What is ACE? Access to College Excellence (ACE) is a learning community program that places cohorts of up to fifteen freshmen into clusters of two to three general educa-tion courses with a one-credit integrating seminar (CAS 110). ACE gets you start-ed on your graduation requirements and creates a positive social and academic network in your first semester.

Why Join an ACE Cluster? Registration made easy! ACE pre-registers you for courses that will help you fulfill core, pre-major, and gradu-ation requirements; so really, your only concern is what to add to your ACE schedule in order to be a full-time student. Work closely with an upperclassman! ACE students meet weekly with a peer mentor (a junior or senior) in a small class setting (CAS 110 Integrating Seminar) to work on issues essential to academic and social success at a large university. Students receive a letter grade for this CAS 110 Seminar. Get to know other freshmen on campus! Not only do you get to know the other students in your ACE cluster, but ACE also has a number of fun social get-togethers that give you the opportunity to meet other stu-dents on campus.

www.manoa.hawaii.edu/undergrad/freshman

7

What is CAS 110? CAS 110 is a small group, one-credit integrating seminar in which you meet weekly with your fellow ACE students and your peer mentor. In this class, you will:

Develop critical thinking skills Learn about campus resources Connect with faculty Explore different major and career choices Develop successful academic strategies Participate in community service How Do I Choose a Cluster? Our clusters are grouped into 19 categories:

Sign-up for a cluster that pertains to an area of study that interests you. If you have not decided on a major, choose a cluster with courses that interest you. ACE learning community students report high satisfaction rates with their teachers, their classes, and the campus. Furthermore, students enrolled in ACE have higher retention rates. By enrolling at UH, you have made education one of your priorities. Why not give yourself another advantage towards your success? ACE learning communities are an excellent place to start! Read on for more information about learning communities; if you need assistance deciding which program is right for your academic goals and interests, give us a call at (808) 956-8626.

How do I read this booklet?

We understand this booklet provides a lot of information and interpreting this booklet can be a bit difficult. Here are a few tips that will make choosing the right cluster and schedule a little easier.

Why do some classes have an asterisk (*) next to them?

The asterisk defines a course that requires a placement exam. UH Mānoa, like many oth-er universities, requires students to pass a specific set of criteria before admittance into certain classes. If you are interested in a learning community that has a “Placement re-quired” course (e.g. CHEM 161), please be sure to take the appropriate placement exam. If you do not place into all appropriate courses in the learning community, please contact the ACE Team as soon as possible. All placement exams must be completed before the end of pre-registration. Students are encouraged to take the placement exams as soon as possible.

Why do some clusters not add up to 15 total credits? In the booklet, the number of credit hours per cluster varies from 8 to 17. However, all clusters amount to 15 credit hours. Clusters with fewer than 15 credit hours in the booklet have guided choice options. These guided choice options are classes the student takes individually. Guided choice options are courses pre-designated by academic advi-sors based on students major or area of interest. Upon pre-registering for an ACE cluster, the student will be prompted to select from the guided choice options. Students are not able to complete signing up for ACE without selecting the guided choices options when prompted. The pre-registration system ensures all clusters amount to a minimum of 15 credit hours.

*Cautionary Note: All classes within an ACE Cluster are subject to change.

Freshman Seminars

Small Discussion Led Courses

What are Freshman Seminars? By limiting classes to a maximum of ten (10) freshman students, Freshman Seminars offer incoming students an opportunity to learn in small class settings while fulfilling gen-eral educational requirements. The seminars encourage interactive learning with a dis-cussion-based curriculum. Courses are led by qualified, advanced students under the direction of senior faculty members. Freshman Seminars are an excellent way to supple-ment an ACE learning community schedule and are recommended for all health, nursing, and law students.

How do I register for a Freshman Seminar course? These courses are reserved for freshmen only! Classified freshmen can follow normal online course registration procedures. When registering, please select the appropriate Freshman Seminar course section.

Note: All Freshman Seminar section numbers are 300+.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns: Location: First Year Programs at Sinclair Library, Room 109 Website: http://manoa.hawaii.edu/undergrad/freshman Phone: (808) 956-8626 Email: [email protected]

1. Why are most ACE learning communities only 10 credits? I need at least 12 cred-its to be full-time.

Learning communities take up approximately ¾ of a full-time schedule. This allows you to take additional classes of your own choosing. However, we do recommend students take closer to 15 credits per term to stay on track for graduation.

2. Do I have to take the placement exams?

Yes. The University of Hawai´i at Mānoa, like many other universities, requires students to pass a specific set of criteria before admittance into certain classes. If you are interest-ed in a learning community that has a “Placement required” course (e.g. CHEM 161), please be sure to take the appropriate placement exam. If you do not place into all ap-propriate courses in the learning community, please contact the ACE Team as soon as possible! 3. How do I register for the learning community classes?

Once you have been accepted into an ACE learning community, we will register you for those classes. Seats in these classes have already been reserved. After you receive a confirmation letter, you are guaranteed admittance into the classes, except in cases where placement is required; students will not be officially admitted into learning communities with “Placement required” classes until they have received placement. 4. How do I Register for a Freshman Seminar course? Classified freshmen can follow normal online course registration procedures. When regis-tering, please select the appropriate Freshman Seminar course section for ES 101 and/or SOC 100.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked Questions (continued)

5. Is there a waiting list for learning communities?

No. Acceptance into learning communities and Freshman Seminar courses are on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes fill fast; register online today!

6. After being registered for courses through the pre-registration system, can I change my mind and register for other courses?

Yes. You may add/drop classes during your traditional registration time period (mid-late August). Please refer to the Registration Timetable for more information: http://myuhinfo.hawaii.edu/object/uhmtimetable.html 7. Can I choose the day and time of the classes in the learning community?

No. Seats have been reserved for learning community use in only the sections we have indicated in this booklet. To see the day, time, and room location of your cluster, visit the ACE website at http://manoa.hawaii.edu/undergrad/freshman. Information will be updated as it becomes available. 8. Do I have to take all of the classes in the learning community cluster?

Yes. A learning community needs to have all the students taking the same classes, under the same instructor, with the same assignments, due dates, and classmates. Learning community students have the most success when they are in the same situation and face the same challenges. 9. When can I sign-up for a learning community or access the pre-registration sys-tem?

May 15th-July 15th at www.manoa.hawaii.edu/star.
